I've just been taking a break from trying to reach level 30 as a soraka support by trying out Zilean support. After enjoying him a lot I took him mid against a Morgan's and a fizz. I did decently against them so I was wondering if he is viable to take ranked when i hit thirty or if it would be considered mostly trolling? Thanks everyone in advance!
I've never played him mid, but as he has a recommended build page just for the role I assume he can be viable in it. He has excellent wave clear so I wouldn't think he'd be completely useless in a solo lane. Try him out in some normals when you hit 30, and if you think you're doing well enough on him and if your team is alright with it, go ahead and play him. I've seen stranger picks succeed, so I imagine Zil mid could work.
Morgana would probably be a bigger threat, because you could just E away if Zed tries to go in on you, and you could ult yourself if he ults you, assuming you've both hit 6. In the support role, tanky hook supports like Blitz, Thresh, Naut etc. are my worst nightmare because I'm pretty much dead if they land one on me, except for maybe if I have my ult up and my ADC is in lane with me. Morgana would kind of have the same effect, rendering you immobile for her jungler to come in and finish you off. You could ult through that and live, but in general I think someone like Morg would be more of a threat.
I'm not really that versed in playing him solo though, so you might want to look at guides on lolking, mobafire etc. to see how he handles solo.

"Is Zilean Mid a decent/somewhat meta pick." First thing: "Meta" does not mean "good" or "strong" or anything like that. Few people play Zilean and he is rarely played mid so Zilean mid is not meta. Zilean mid also has a pretty good win rate, so he could be decent*. You would be fine to play him there. (I must note, I know that doesn't mean a lot, especially with picks that are that rare, but it's worth taking into consideration.)

Zed is countered by Zilean and while Morgana does pretty well against Zilean its not for that reason. What counters Zilean is champions who can deal damage more reliably to Zilean that don't all--in and champions who don't need to play against Zilean, to deal with him, to win. Champions that work in that play style deny his strengths in mid by them being avoided simply by them by being not applicable to their play style.

P.S. Also, if you are a new player, consider not playing Ranked when you just hit 30. You probably won't enjoy the results.
