Haven't played since season 3, have a few questions

So I figured the beginning of a new season would be a good time to check the game out again, the thing is that I have not played since the end of season 3 (I think Aatrox was the newest champion released at the time) and was just wondering if there is anything I should know. I played mostly support and mid and just curious if there are any champs that should be avoided right now, or really just any tips for relearning the game.

right now games snowball really hard.

there's a lot of new champs especially look at ekko, kalista, bard, tahm kench, gnar, just to understand their kit. they have surprises that will inherently outplay you if you don't know what you're facing against.

and most importantly don't get frustrated with bad games. they happen. learn from them, try to identify mistakes you made that might have impacted the game to much, and make a note to make a different play next time.

also, look at the masteries. it's a very new system.

Yeah I'm messing the masteries now, looks like it uses the skeleton of the old system but the pick and choose that's forced in each tree is interesting.

You are now limited to carry 2 pink wards at all times, and only allowed to place 1 at a time. Play around the trinket system & Sight Stones, the new vision system takes some time to get used to.

Theres lots of new GP+5 items, Of course, Heart of Stone & Philosophers stone are no longer in game. Keep in mind you are only limited to 1 gold generating item.

You can't buy jungle items if you don't have smite, and smiting large jungle camps gives different effects.

Lots of new items in game, might want to go to LoL's website and slowly go through them. Go through preseason rundown videos for seasons 5 (or patch-notes for 4.21) for jungle changes (of course, look up the preseason 6 rundowns as well)

New support (though not limited to support) champions you might want to look at:

  • Braum (burly guy with a giant shield that blocks all projectiles)

  • Bard (fat chubby celestial being that only uses trumpets to talk. Oh, he gives you a magical journey as well and an AoE Zhonyas affecting everyone)

  • Tahm Kench (Catfish demon with a big mouth, make sure you taunt your enemy champions, hes nearly got a line for everyone! Also, he can eat enemies / team mates)

Yeah that sounds good, I'll do some reading, is the spells meta still just flash/ignite/smite or is there some variety now?

actually aatrox is pretty viable in top and jg right now, the new lifesteal mastery along with the keystone mastery that buffs autos were made for him. tanky aatrox goes great with the new titanic hydra too and deaths dance. you should definitely take him for a run!
