Garen is too OverPowered

Plz nerf garen. The balanced team nerfed the irrelevant part of his kit but buffed his already strong abilities.

They overbuffed a champ that was doing more than fine, again. Riots balance team is a steaming pile of shit.

What happened to these boards constantly complaining about how immobile champs need help?

They're actually taking the piss now

Bro. Garen is still incredibly weak and easy to beat. Now even being a lot squishier than before.

The only things that changed is that you can't just sit in his E for full duration and laugh it off.

Funny enough he is quite weak early and drops off massively around level 11 to 12 compared to what he could do before.

It is literally this easy... - DO.NOT.STAND.IN.THE.SPIN.

You could never sit in his e? Garen has borderline no counterplay now even for ranged champs. You get caught once with his you and you're dead, because of t he assassin level of damage he does now,

His Silence makes sure you stay there and eat the whole meal.

Mihalikb7 votes

When did silence become a root? Plus it's a massively telegraphed melee ability with a 1.5 second duration. Less than half of his actual spin duration.

You do this thing called... Move. You know... Click somewhere on the screen that is not next to Garen.

Not to mention if you are playing Fiora, you can literally parry the Q. It's the ability you should be parrying.

FioraWillCarry3 votes

His silence might as well be a root because you are not getting away once he nails you with it. Q+E+item 3044 = In escapable death.

Also, I'm maining Kayle now. I haven't played Fiora is quite a long while, not that Kayle has any problems with Garen but even so, it's crucial not to get hit by his Q.

You can't flash the E when silenced. And if he catches you, you're dead. Also, the E procs conquerer almost instantaneously.

Mihalikb7 votes

Hear me out... Have you tried... Walking? Yes he will follow you but his actual spin is longer than his silence.

There's no actual way for Garen to trigger Conqueror from zero to full in 1.5 seconds even if he is stacking attack speed.

What is happening is this...

You allowed him to auto you. Then ate a Q (massively telegraphed melee range ability) and then he already had 2 stacks before starting to spin. That's why he triggered Conqueror in the silence.

Now you don't mention what champ you were playing, but what you typically do to bone him, if he meleed you before Qing, that should have been your queue to either CC, or start moving away.

Flash the Q then? I mean, its not really that complicated. Hes immobile and has to literally walk into you to kill you....

PB4UAME9 votes

Oh no a speed up for literally only 1.5 seconds on an otherwise entirely immobile, slow base MS, and entirely ranged restricted character. If you're not standing already on top of him, and don't have any mobility tool yourself, maybe just, I dunno, CC him? Even a simple 20% slow for 1 second will be plenty, or else, just, I don't even know, walk backwards for 1.5 seconds?

[sg-lux-2]

Saezio9 votes

So, if I am melee I just never kill him under any circumstances?

Such a beginner's champ should never have these winrates in high elo (masters challenger)

LatetotheRace1 votes

That's my thought, Garen should be an easy champion with severely limited ability in ranked. It's great to learn the game on, but you need to move on to other champions to progress past silver.

LatetotheRace1 votes

Ever heard of Phage/TF? It's his new rush.

Yets42402 votes

What rock have you been living under. There is nothing new about that, he's been rushing phage since about S4, and certainly before his last rework in mid S5. So for 5 years now he's been rushing phage into BC or TF, with TF being the preferred and higher winrate item for several years now.

LatetotheRace1 votes

He rushed BC since it was introduced, but now it's primarily TF. The statement is still valid as the previous bullshit about him not sticking, what a joke.

Thats already a thing youre supposed to do... If you need to give up CS to not die, you give up CS. This is top lane 101....

LatetotheRace1 votes

This is actually a recent phenomenon, starting back in season 6~ when counterpicks became less of an advantage and more like fucking curb stomping. Regardless, once they end up getting 50 farm up on you they can effortlessly dive you with their substantial gold lead and then the lane is completely over. Yup, sounds like a good concept to me, totally losing top lane 101.

No, it started in season 4ish after they made it so top laners didnt have so much sustain they could just face tank everything and fight for 5 minutes straight and have both back off with 80% HP.

Even IF we assume it started in S6, thats still multiple years to learn how to play. You dont have a real excuse.

Woah its almost like a champion who is melee and has no ranged abilities, is good in melee range! WOAH funny how that works.

What is this myth? Is Yasuo easy to kite aswell outside of lane because he can only dash in melee range?

You think he jumped in winrate by 3.5% and had his playrate trippled! by accident?

You see, garen players just trained in the hyperbolic time chamber and got this much better overnight.

Totally not the champion being overpowered.

PB4UAME3 votes

Huh, according to both: https://www.leagueofgraphs.com/champions/stats/garen

and https://champion.gg/champion/Garen/Top

He's at a 50.6% winrate this patch (the last two days) after he had been at a 50.78% winrate two patches ago. That's no where NEAR a jump like you claim. He was already sitting at a higher winrate, and though his play rate spiked, his winrate actually decreased plat+.

JackMcCarry6 votes

1st, you are using 2 different sites in your comparison, that's already not really a good start. 2nd, on League of graphs, you chose "ALL" as role for him, that includes support, jungle and adc. 3rd, Riot stated u.gg is the site which represents champions stats closely to their own data.

Thats where i took my stats from, feel free to check them yourself.

Current garen is less powerful against semi-burst opponent with sustained-mobility. Eg: Udyr and Fiora. His defense technically is destroyed here. Previously, on first 0.75 second, you have over 2.2x your effective health and with how DR works, it means also more effective healing value in that burst moment. But now, you merely only got about 1.6x effective health (including the shield) and also less healing value. There is the cap armor reduction altho probably may ignored for more agressive players or in faster games. Then his E spin now actually nerfed late if the player doesn't do something. The dependency on attack speed for his E spin means also some crippling effect will affect him more than before. Shredding takes longer as well. Although his multi target damage increased quite significant, his dueling potential is nerfed by loss of that 8%. He is buffed however if the player now build more into damage-fighter instead tank fighter type. Death Dancer, storm razor and Shiv now becomes viable for Garen due to attack speed. It is like Rito wants Garen to be more Darius-ish.

No no sir, they wanted him to more of Urgot-ish, cause they give him the same treatment of Urgot, buff his offensive in trade of his defensive

If we are being fair, the changes to garen on the pbe were straight up just criminal, people were getting trinity force rage blade and just q + e'ing anyone that touched him to death atleast because it triggered on hit effects. While i do think he is a little over statted now i dont think his ability changes were enough to make him op, but for those people using conquer on top of it, it just makes garen a real issue for champs with bad low kite kits.

But with all things running pure damage on garen means he is weak to fast burns like brand or ashe that leave him low enough for burst champs to pop him And full tank garen has almost no real all in damage plus running a keystone like ghrasp makes him almost unchanged if not for a fair sized shield on w

Mihalikb6 votes

The shield is complete garbage compared to the straight damage mitigation.

Your typical ADC like Jihn or Vayne can easily crit mid to late game for anything like 800 to 1000.

Before you could mitigate 60% of that. If you were being collapsed on or dived you could get hit for even as much as 1.5k at the same time. Reducing 60% of that could be anything from 600 to 900 damage mitigated.

Now Garen would need to have 6 to 9k HP to mitigate the same amount.

The shield massively falls off after level about 3. Up until then it can mitigate 70 to 100 damage. Which is quite a bit. But after that damage values scale much faster than Garen's HP.

His damage is still lower (much lower) than Renekton, Mordekaiser or Darius. And he doesn't have any stuns, pulls or slows.

It's just everyone got used being able to facetank Garen, but now that he actually hurts to stand next to people seem to be confused.

Like one of the commenters here saying OMG he can even kill ranged champions! The outrage.

Just as Aatrox, Renekton, Mordekaiser. Darius etc. While still either being less mobile than any of the above and having no CC or slows.

AAAAAND you lost every gram of credibility as a person right there. Calling jhin mid game crits "typical".

Stephenizgod5 votes

What? This is ridiculous, Garen didn't change enough to make him OP. He still has the same weaknesses the only difference now is his laning phase. The only reason he saw a sudden spike in winrate is because his laning phase and match-ups changed, but he is falling back down because its a minor change.

They basically went from E doing basically nothing to E being his main source of damage again like it used to be. He still builds roughly the same build but now he has access to more damage items instead of being forced into the same juggernaut build. You all complain about Garen being slightly stronger, but Darius is way worse if you don't take him out first he can win a teamfight by himself. Garen can't do that, not unless he is very ahead.

Pick a champion that can out sustain him, I know for a fact Mordekaiser can outsustain his E damage with Passive + W and deals more damage than him. Fiora seems like a bad match up for him still, Irelia and Jax don't seem very fun to fight late game. Any ranged champion still shits on him. His match-up with Darius changes now that his R is true damage and he is back to sustained damage, I haven't done this match up yet though. Aatrox if he can land the Q consistently wins this match up. Teemo is always a thorn in Garen's side, depends on how good the Teemo is though. Kayle... hate this match up personally.

Garen is still simple and easy to deal with, easy to gank, easy to kite, easy to CC.

Saezio2 votes

Yeah being able to instaproc conq didn't change him much.

Play him 10 games with anothe keystone then 10 games with conq and see what changed.

Stephenizgod4 votes

He is stronger in lane now and his build is different, but his playstyle and teamfight is the same. He is more likely to win lane now which is nice since he has a longer list of bad match-ups than good ones.

Vonyalo4 votes

Maybe he will receive a minor nerf, but dont expect too much. He had close to zero winning matchups in high elo and couldnt carry games even when ahead. Now, it seems, he can.

8Belthazor88 votes

That is the problem. He shouldn't be able to carry in high elo ever. Braindead champions are allowed to stomp low elo, for that they have to fall in high elo. If one of these champions has 50+% in high elo it means serious nerf is needed.

Mihalikb9 votes

There are about half a dozen Champs that perform well in high elo who are as basic and simple as Garen or more.

Ashe. Tryndamere. Yi. Karma. Kennen. Amumu.

Considering the amount of counterplay, counterpicks and counter itemization available against Garen, losing to Garen is basically the LOL equivalent of suicide by cop.

You outplayed yourself.

8Belthazor86 votes

The champions you listed have skillshots at least and Yi is barely played in high elo because he is bad. There is no such thing as "more simple than Garen" btw. He is the symbol of braindead easy champions... well probably after Yi. If I play Garen I cannot say "I outplayed my opponent" because Garen doesn't rely on skills, only on common game knowledge. There is no difference between a diamond and a challenger Garen player if we're talking about mechanics.

losing to Garen is basically the LOL equivalent

That is 100% true. If someone is already master+ it is very basic knowledge how to counter such a simple champion as Garen. Therefore, if high elo players cannot counter him it means he is overpowered asf. I know this a temporarily and he will fall a bit when players adapt his changes, However, I don't see him to fall under 50% win rate in master+ so he definitely needs a nerf.

I mean, 53% win rate in master+ for a champion that can be mastered within an hour? Bad joke.

Mihalikb7 votes

The only champs on that list that list that have anything resembling a skillshot are Ashe's ult (which is not really necessary for her to kill anyone) and Amumu's gap closer.

Kennen's shuriken is spammable, Karma's "skillshot" is a massive and spammable on cool down AOE (all her abilities are as they have no real mana cost).

Tryndamere's skillshot is a massive AoE/gap closer that you just use in the general direction where you wanna go and auto attack it to death.

It's like Garen's Q. Just better in every way.

Her W's a skill shot, wide as it may be.

Only the ult version of Karma's Q is big. The standard shot is thin and is significantly easier to avoid. Also, a skill shot being spammable doesn't negate the fact that Garen has literally no avoidable damage when he's in interaction range.

And we've seemed to have forgotten that Amumu literally can't do anything without landing bandages first or running to his destination.

he has never been intended for high elo, its been KNOWN for YEARS you cant change garen to much because his kit is next to impossible to balance. Riot is just dumb and forgot the obvious.

Vonyalo9 votes

there's no such thing as "he has never been intended for high elo". That's not how you design a champion. People were just too used to the fact that garen was a joke and now when he is actually a threat everyone's freaking out. But I agree that he is difficult to balance around both high and low elo. Nothing can be done about that unfortunately. That's how this game works.

Saezio4 votes

Of course there are champions designed for high or low elo.

Why do you think there is a difficulty indicator on champions?

There are champs like garen and annie that are simple and intended for beginners

Mighty Mortein2 votes

You can see when Garen uses his Q. You use that to back off a bit until he uses it on a minion. There are 2 champions I hate facing when I'm Garen. Mordekaiser and Yorick. Both have ways to keep you either off them or let them fight you on their terms.

Mordekaiser's passive with Conqueror is rough because it does a lot of damage and lasts a long time. And Yoricks traps Garen with his W.

Treat Garen Q like Vladimir Passive. Back off when it's up. They may be zoning you, but it's better than dying. You just have to survive laning phase or until your jg ganks you. I know that's rough, but Garen is effectively useless when behind, especially in teamfights if your team positions well enough.
