The importance of the Top-laner

Personally, I love the top lane. 1v1s, being disconnected from the rest of the games, the trades, and the fact that some of my favorite champions Gnar Rumble Jax makes me want to main it. But what is the importance of the top lane? Mid is for having a lot of influence, Jungle is more having even more influence along with objective control, ADC is for carrying games, and Support is for being the team's backbone and making sure the ADC can carry the game. So, what exactly is the Top lanes importance?

The toplaner needs to be able to do many things and be many things. But some of it will be mostly implied

  1. Firstly and again, the toplaner needs to do and be many things, some of which will be mostly implied thus implying they need to be flexible champs

  2. The toplaner needs to be prepared for a snowbally lane

  3. the toplaner needs to be ready for a 1v2 even if that means losing the lane eventually.

  4. The toplane needs to be ready to defend jungle or combo with the jungler

  5. The toplaner needs to be ready to roam push, etc at anytime.. can't do that from base now can you.. more implications

  6. The toplaner is typically a sturdy champ but doesn't have to be... (even though they do ultimately need to have some staying power of some sort because of #1-6)

  7. Midgame the toplaner typically helps make sure that the team gets to the lategame even if mid and bot cannot

  8. typically the requirements for being a toplaner, both implied and explicit, make them good splitpushers or some other stuff that gives your team alternative means of getting ahead. If someone has to splitpush its usually gonna be the toplaner so jungle can keep smite ready and close by unless jungler can realistically expect to make it to dragon or baron on time while splitpushing.

  9. Due to the nature of toplane and the defensive/sustain extremes that thrive there it is a good place to send certain types of champs, the long length of the lane also contributes to this. Toplane is sometimes used to make some earlygames work for teamcomps that can't fit a certain champ in bot lane or something

for example

Shen Thresh with these two on your team you'll have some epic pulls for Nunu or Amumu jungle but that comes later in the game. Both can go support but obviously you don't want 2 supports and shen has some good tools for doing well in toplane without compromising his more successful buildpaths too much. So shen will go top and level faster than the 3 in jungle and bot and will be able to do some things champs at lower levels wont be able to deal with at times before the end of the midgame with the sort of bulky beefy kit or build one uses for toplane.

Split pushing, sometimes tanking, and tp plays to turn fights around in your team's favor.
