Question about GodGaren.

I'm by no means good at LoL. I can tangle well with golds and plats, but that is about it. So on a lark I played Garen last week for the first time in a couple years, and since then I have been pulling 20/0 kind of games (16/2, 18/0, that sort of thing) against well ranked top opponents. Numbers I haven't really seen since the early games when everyone in the map had less than 300 games. I go early Avarice, then Triforce - speed boots - Spirit Visage - Thornmail - youmuu's and straight demolish the other team, engaging and disengaging at will.

So how come I never see any other Garens? I've seen maybe four Garens in the last fifty games or so. Which strikes me as odd given his apparent power. Is there just a hard counter to him that I haven't run into?

four garens in fifty games is nearly 10% which is pretty high. i didnt expect that much since i have seen maybe two garens in the last 500 games.

garen is very strong, tho he has some soloQ problems because noobs dont understand his powers, thus your own team keeps denying you.

other than that, i think black cleaver first is mandatory followed by youmus and then defense.

I'll try Black Cleaver. I'm wondering how that may turn out considering how hard I'm dominating with the current build. If I recall correctly, BC was a core Garen thing way back in the day.

trinity doesnt really increase his damage as he doesnt need the ap, the attack speed, and doesnt have the means of proccing it more than once every trade. like, you proc it with Q but you then instantly turn on W and E to do maximum best trades and then disengage, so it doesnt help you much.

black cleaver gives everything garen needs, its just THE ONE SINGLE BEST ITEM on him.

i would argue, that ghostblade synergizes just as well with his kit as cleaver. it gives him insane power for trades, especially very early on. it has every single offensive stat garen would ever want from an item.

even the attack speed on the item is incredibly useful, since it comes in a short duration burst active. meaning you trade with q + spin into ghostblade active into q + spin.

garens ability to trade drops off into abysmal depths, when his spells are on cooldown. ghostblades active allows you to work around that.

and i can not stress enough how incredibly useful the movement speed on the active is. for either chases or escapes.

thats why i said to get ghostblade as second item in my first post. you can probably get brutalizer into black cleaver, but i think rushing bc i just too good as even phage helps garen chose his trades freely and the cleaver is just TOO good. damage, health, armor shred, cooldown reduction, massive speedboost. really, its absurd.

then, ghostblade as second item into one tanky item and you are set for king of the game.

...Irelia? idk

Irelia does ok, but if I get any jung support at all she eats the lightening from the sky.

You were against silver 5/bronze players, who are known to always feed Garen even if they pick something that beats him.

He doesn't get picked a lot because if you want a tanky top then there are generally better options, and if you want a bruiser there are also better options, and if you wanted to build him with more AD then once again there's also better options. He'll be picked because he's "easy", even though he's not, or because someone enjoys playing him/knows how to.

I tend to get pitted against gold/plat tops tho...

You did once... against an AP Nasus while his team did really bad and your performance wasn't as great.

triforce is rather unusual. ive seen it work before, but as more of a "troll pick" on garens who were already snowballing in a winning game.

problem with the item is, that mana and ap are both wasted stats. and you get the same, if not more mobility out of cleaver. i always felt, that if im not having at least ghostblade, cleaver and i.e. i dont deal enough damage lategame to take down an ad carry.

just throwing some useful tips out there.

  • his courage passive stacks multiplicative and recursive with enchanted armor. so going 9/21/0 is actually pretty good since the defensive changes (you get 134 armor out of a thornmail, and another 7 mr with adaptive armor).

  • if youre in a favourable matchup, which doesnt happen all that often, 21/9/0 is also an option. it requires more experience to work with a "squishier" garen though

  • the highest win % summoner on garen is summoner 14 . its far better than tp on him, since it makes him even more of a threat in lane, and helps his ability chain to burst an opponent down. and his tp ganks arent that great anyways. so you might be better of just putting a large amount of pressure on your lane with ignite. UNLESS youre being counterpicked. in that case you want to go tp to be able to make something of the situation and help out other lanes or keep yourself in lane and csing.

  • here are some olf my core items on him:

item 3142 all around a great item. extra mobility, extra damage between spin cooldowns if youre fighting extended duels, every stat he ever wants item 3071 this item was made for him, no questions asked item 3155 / item 3156 obvious good choice item 3143 the slow active helps stick to your target and keep people in spin range. always prefer over item 3068 (serioulsy overrated item on garen) item 3031 for raw offensive power. his q and e can crit and get the damage amplification of i.e. especially with the zekes rework looming, could bring you to a high crit chance with ghostblade. a decisive strike crit on a squishy with an i.e. in your inventory usually means a secure kill item 3075 in many cases a good first item rush in lane. it turns you invincible against melee carries like tryn and a lot of other auto attackers. they will be completely unable to fight you and trade with you for a long time item 3035 situational. switch i.e. for this, if youre fighting heavy armored teams item 3087 situational. can be a good buy against very squishy, mobile teams. the passive can add some quite noticable burst to decisive strike item 3065 situational against ap heavy teams. since the cleaver changes and additinal cdr i found myself buying this less and less and just switched maw for it as my big mr item.

now go and deliver justice!

edit.: oh, and watch out for Ashe Anivia Janna and the like on the enemy team. theyre nasty

I think the main reason was the phage. the movement made lane engages crazy easy to do and disengage from.

Since they buffed his passive, Garen really doesn't ever have to leave lane unless he wants to buy something. He is the prototype bruiser, tanky but does good damage. He is a hard champ to beat if you can play him well.
