@Riot A better way to look at balancing for bursty assassins with little counterplay.

As much as everyone here likes to turn their nose to Dota, it's hard to not look over and take inspiration from one item in particular. Ghost Scepter.

If something similar to this effect was added into the game, it would add a situational defensive option for all champions without completely making them useless, and without warranting reworks for existing champions or mechanics.

The item exchanges the champion's movespeed, ability to attack, and their magic resist to be nullified to right clicks and physical damage for a couple seconds. The counterplay to the item is pretty obvious, and the active by itself isn't innately overpowered.

Ghost Scepter is worth it's weight when the player uses it correctly. Instead of the current alternative to just buying a Zhonya's or stacking health/armor when it's completely out of place in an attempt to survive.

Slot real estate also plays a big role here, it's not (by itself) and overbearingly offensive/defensive item, meaning that just picking it up doesn't mean you'll get max efficiency with 80 armor or an extra 500 health or something silly like that. Maybe something akin to a small 20/ad, 15% lifesteal, something along those lines.

Anyway, I personally think this is the solution a lot of us are looking for.

That sounds like a bad version of zhonya's.

Zhyona's is an AP item for mages who need a defensive option. This is a purely defensive option again physical damage with a different layer of interaction. They're only similar in the way you can't attack while under it's effect.

It still takes up an item slot so it better have some stats on it.

It'll be a great item addition. Making yourself vulnerable to magic damage and being slowed and unable to auto in exchange for being untargettable by physical damage spells and abilities is pretty amazing while not being overbearing.

It is totally useless against AP assassins which means that AP assassins will actually have a niche. As of right now there is little making AP assassins better than AD assassins, which is reflected in their win rates, since all AD assassins have high sustained damage as well as burst. The niche ability to burst someone through this item will make them more worthwhile.

ehm, what exactly, does "he item exchanges the champion's movespeed, ability to attack, and their magic resist to be nullified to right clicks and physical damage for a couple seconds." mean?

Exactly what I described.

The active makes them "ethereal",
They get slowed for a percentage. Magic hurts them more. But they can't take physical damage for a few seconds. But they also can't attack themselves. It's kinda like selectively removing yourself from the game, but still able to be stunlocked or bursted, which is where knowing when to use it properly comes into play.

..I can see a great many flaws with that item.
