Trying to learn ADC, help! (Support main)

Flavescent··3 votes·1,452 views

Hello, I am a support main (one-trick Nami) contemplating on learning ADC. I enjoy being a support and think it's super fun, however, recent circumstances with a friend made me want to learn the ADC role. I know how Caitlyn and MF work because I've tried them out in practice tool and a few draft games but I really want to do better.

The ADCs that I have in my collection are the following: Ashe, Caitlyn, Jinx, Twitch, Tristana, Kai'sa, Varus, Vayne, Sivir, Kalista, and MF. Some I bought because I want I to learn them, some I got from loot.

Anyway, yeah, if you guys have any tips for me as to who I should try practicing first, please let me know! The way I learn best is practicing a champ until I reach mastery 6 on them (weird but, hehe). Any general and/or specific regarding transitioning from support to ADC will be very much appreciated.

Thank you and have a good day!

Yours, Buncha

(first time posting here and I got lost in the OCE boards LOL, sorry if this is considered as spam)

Go into practice tool. Buy no items. Cs for 10 minutes trying to only last hit/keep it out from under your tower. At 10 minutes reset. Do this until you can get to 80 cs consistently.

Load in beginner bots. Set enemy to sivir. Farm against her for 10 minutes without poking her at all. Try to keep the waves crashed in the middle of the wave by imitating her attack patterns. Do this until 80 cs consistently. Also no items.

Do this again for intermediate bots.

You now know how to cs under basic conditions for the lane.

Load in intermediate bots as the adc you want to learn. Bully the bot out of lane without killing them at all amd freeze the wave (I would suggest looking up how to freeze and minions numbers you need At certain spots). Your goal is deny the bot as much as you can with your kit while keeping the lane frozen as best you can. Do this until yoy can zone and hit 80 cs consistently.

When you play normals think about your support and imagine you are playing them. If you are playing support, what are you imagining your adc should be doing? What kind of play would you want to see? Is your adc (you) keeping themself in range to do damage and be safe near tge support?

Buy lots of pinks. Pinks ans blue trinkets are the only way it is ever safe enough for you to farm a side lane. IIn General though you should try to farm mid ans have mid goto a side lane. Mids tend to be able to 1v1 better and you really need to be nearby for teamfights

Hello, thank you so much for your response. I truly appreciate the specific way you suggested as to how I should learn this role.

Sorry for another question but in your suggestion should stay away from using my waveclear and just focus on basic attacks or should I use my waveclear every now and then? I just want to clarify.

Also, is there a specific reason why I should go against Sivir? Curious.

Again, thank you so much for the time you spent teaching me how to do this.

Enjoy your games and I wish you all the best!

Cheers, Buncha

Breaking it down to parts.

Last hitting: try to only use autos but if you need to use an ability to secure cs do it. Just recognise it can push the wave.

Pushing out from tower: if the wave is going to collapse under your tower then you need to make sure it doesn't do that. A good way is to use abilities and autos to thin the wave. You can also pull minion aggro into you and walk up towards tri. This keeps them away from tower without having to clear as much to help you freeze.

Sivir uses her w and q a lot which pushes the wave. It is good practice for marching an adc who may try to shove you under tower.

I have a couple of videos on my yt channel i used to supplement coaching I gave for free last season. They're pretty low quality (they were meant to emphasis things I taught more than be a crash course) but I can link you those as well as some proper adc crash course guides.

Hello, once again thank you for your help.

I would very much like to view your coaching if it's alright with you.

Thank you for your patience with me!

My quick tips are: Find a character or two who you really enjoy.

Sit in practice tool with no items except dorans, and just farm and get the feel of last hitting.

Find your playstyle, aggressive or defensive.

Practice and ask for advice.

Hoo boy, where do I start? I suck at explaining/giving advice xD

There's quite a bit to learn. ADCs must always watch their positioning at all times and keep an eye on the map. Just know that ADC's primary concern is farming minions. Minions are easy, reliable sources of gold, kills are not. Some matchups are worse than others. Just know that if you play a short-ranged ADC, you will be at a disadvantage. Longer range ADCs can poke/harass w/o much return dmg if they play well. I'd probably recommend Caitlyn or Ezreal as they are pretty safe carries with their range + mobility (though, its very easy to shove ezreal under the turret so you'll have to learn how to farm under tower. 2 tower shots + 1 AA for melee; 1 AA + 1 Tower + 2nd AA for casters). Another thing to note, as I assume you know as a support player, stay parallel with your support. Side by side. If the enemy botlane (or jg gank) focus your support, don't just run away, attack as you are running. They aren't focusing you so you are free to damage & possibly turn the fight/get a kill.

Don't mindlessly attack the minion wave, especially if you dont know where the enemy jungler is at unless you are sure your duo has the better matchup. When the enemy adc walks up to last hit, fire an AA at them (They'll have to make a decision whether to take dmg for the CS or to trade back, missing the CS). When you are pushed up to their turret, you can either try to poke them while they're trying to farm under tower, or get free shots on the turret (be careful of positioning!). If you ever get alone time with the turret, try to use your autos on the turret rather than the minions, except for last hitting. You can kill minions with spells, but you can't dmg turret with spells, only autos! But it's also good to clear the incoming enemy wave so that your minions can stay alive to attack the tower (and for the minion backdoor bonus).

As an ADC you have to attack the closest target in range that is the highest priority. Mainly tanks but if you can safely attack another champion, attack the highest threat. DO NOT TUNNEL! It's ok to only get 1 or 2 attacks off and then change targets. Look up Stutter Step/Orb Walking & Kiting. Just always try to stay at your max AA range (thats your advantage as a ranged/ADC champ). Atk, move back, atk, move back (or forward if you are chasing). Moving targets are harder to hit. Never just stand still.

Wow, didn't realize 3 paragraphs already. I'll stop for now lol. Hope this helps!

Hello! Yes, you have helped me and I really am thankful.

I like how detailed you were especially with the farming under tower since I can never get it right.

I will definitely take note of your advice about my current dilemma. Thank you so much for your help; I shall do my best!

Enjoy your games today and I wish you luck!
