Haven't played since the end of Season 3, what has changed?

Cynder Kurokazna··1 votes·2,915 views

I stopped playing League what feels like ages ago, during Preseason 4, at least for the most part. I've occasionally logged on the PBE around the times of new champ releases to try them out with the exception of Jhin, who I didn't much care for because I don't ever really play ADC. I used to main mid, support, and top. Some time mid season four, I tried learning a bit of the jungle to play Rek'sai, who I've fallen in love with, so the few times I have played since S3, it has mostly either been Rek or a new champion.

I've seen a lot of things about various jungle updates, people complaining that ADCs might as well not exist any more, itemization updates (I have no clue what to build for a midlaner any more), and loads of other stuff. So would anyone mind filling me in on what I've missed the past three seasons? What changed? What are the cool kids building these days? Why are my friends that still play complaining about ADC? Anyone mind enlightening me?

Honestly, too much to explain. Boards is going to be a horrible place to get information because 80%+ of the people here will just spout complaints about current and passing annoyances.

If you really want to take the time to figure out what changed, I suggest just reading the wiki a ton. Here are a few things:

  • Jungle was changed. Multiple times.
  • Dragons were changed. They are now elemental with an Elder at the end.
  • A new pre-baron boss called Rift Herald was added.
  • There was a large juggernaut update, adc update, mage update, and assassin update that essentially made moderate to crucial changes to all of the affected champions.
  • Tons of items. Just browse the item page and click on them all, because even if you recognize them they might be stat changed.
  • Lots of new champions. Same with items, just browse them.
  • And reworks. Champion reworks galore (Warwick Taric PoppyYorick Ryze

Thank you so much. I know the forums are normally full of salt, but I had nowhere else to start looking. I thought about raiding the wiki, but I figured some kind soul trapped here in the salt mines might have something useful to say or a direction to point me in for more clear, concise information regarding just what has been changed so that I didn't have to spend hours combing through a wikipedia for a game that has been around this long for information that may or may not be relevant.

Any specific things I should try to look up first that are more relevant to how the game is being played now?

Snowballing is out of hand now and teams whom get the first tower are extremely likely to win.

The first thing I would do is go into a custom game and walk around to look at the new camps, epic monsters, plants (yes, there are now plants), and anything else that doesn't look familiar. Then I'd look up whatever champ you used to play in season 3 on the wiki and look if they've been changed or not.

After that, the best way to adapt is probably just to start playing games and using trial and error to see what's not familiar.

Well people have moved away from calling you a %%%got, and now say you have downs. So that's changed.

Still better than some other games I've played in the mean time.

Amen. Have you played smite? Literally had two people threatening to rape each other...

Everything, broken champs are 85% of champs and 15% are balanced.

CancerBasedGod2 votes

That is almost logically impossible. Balance is the state of the average champ (or in this case I'd use median, as the average is lowered too much by Nunu ). You can't have a majority be unusually strong.

ADC is a joke now, tanks do all the damage and assassins can literally one shot anything. There you go.

Yes, but why? What happened? I have no context for literally any of this. What happened to ADCs? Who goes bot lane now if not an ADC with a support/mage? And what is making tanks deal so much damage? What about these new items? Someone mentioned Crit Vayne was somehow a thing and the only viable "true" ADC these days? LITERALLY WHAT?

CancerBasedGod1 votes

Basically most champs are viable, and people only think they can play Fotm.

The current thing people think is the end all, is lethality ADCs. Lethality was increased in how effective it was early (not by much) and now people are obsessed with flat pen. However it only really works so well because everyone is running mage sup. If you stick a tank sup like Naut in the lethality build is not going to do anything special.

Glad to know we have cry babies in the forums.

CancerBasedGod1 votes

Are you replying to yourself calling yourself a crybaby?

CancerBasedGod1 votes

Lol... This is almost refreshing... RoTM is on ADCs being OP and how lethality should be melee only. Tank raging went out of style.

???

Are we even playing the same game? Have you seen all the QQ threads about ADCs abusing lethality?

Lethality? Is that what they changed armor pen to?

CancerBasedGod2 votes

Yes. Armor pen was too strong early so they made it into lethality, which is basically the same but starts off 60% effective and scales with enemy level.

That is the kind of explanation I was looking for. The wiki makes it look a lot more complicated. So they basically nerfed armor pen so hard that they had to change its name, kinda like LeBlanc's Q? Nice.

Also, Riot recently buffed lethality quite significantly and now people begging for nerfs.

So is it presently stronger than the old Armor Pen stat was? It just seems to effect armor and have no effect based on max health, so you could hypothetically just counter it by building a bunch of HP from the sound of it.

I don't think it is stronger than the old armor pen stats but it definitely is strong rn.

So things I've picked up so far:

  1. Don't stack armor
  2. "85% of the champ pool is overpowered", so 85% of champs are viable and like 15% are underpowered? Nice. Urgot jungle, here I come! (not really)
  3. This "Redemption" thing I saw on the Wiki looks cool
  4. RoA got a much needed rework. Can't wait to see how this does on ARAM
  5. What the hell happened to Ardent Censer? DAYUM! Is that a must-build on supports now? It looks like a must-build for supports.
  6. Still confused by new Hextech items, though they look cool
  7. Phantom Dancer got a new passive? Sweet.
  8. 45% armor reduction on Last Whisper? Yeah, I can see how building armor is futile now
  9. Rapid Firecannon is no longer an active and that works passively. I like this.
  10. Rab's is still looking good, did they nerf Mejai's?
  11. Knight's Vow looks cool, too. How are people using this, if using it at all?

remember when renekton and jax were viable in competition?

they aren't anymore

I played one game of ranked in Season 4. Syndra vs Jax Mid. If that's not a thing any more, oh my god, I'm so glad.

CancerBasedGod2 votes
  1. Stacking armor is still good. The idea that it isn't is more myth than fact.
  2. Redemption is brought on most supports right now, it is strong.
  3. Ardent is surprisingly underused. It shouldn't be, but it is. That speed boost, and stims, and shield increase... Plus AP and CD. It really should be Janna meta.
  4. That is 45% bonus armor penetration, it doesn't do anything to cut base armor, so it is less powerful than it looks.
  5. Knights Vow, I think it's meta on Taric. However that and Zeke's Harbringer are surprisingly rare, as they require some basic teamwork. (hell Zeke's is a freaking 50% crit boost when active, that should be way more common.)

Alright, so I think I'm getting more in the hang of it now. What's the usual item progression for mids these days? If I need a target as an example, I'll throw Syndra out there, as I still really love playing her. And who are we seeing as meta supports these days?
