Why doesn't the game auto lock your champ at 0?

Kinda weird, imo. I wound up dodging against my will because I didn't manually lock in. There was communication in the lobby and I wound up switching roles in the last second,

then I picked my champ and dodged because I couldn't lock it in fast enough.
