Support Itemization Ideas for Changes - Part 1 - Basic Items and Sightstone
DISCLAIMER : The following are just my IDEAS for changes to support items, since i'm no balance expert take it as such.
So one of the reasons that the support role isn't too popular is mainly because it operates on a low budget and can't afford as much as useful items as quickly as other roles. This leads to support items usually being cheaper and having a certain amount of gold-sink stats. (see - % Base Health Regeneration which is only useful for laning, excessive amounts of CDR resulting in overcapping etc.)
Also, because supports usually have to sink their first 800 gold into a Sightstone, even further delaying the purchase of any items with combat stats.
While i can't really say that the following suggestions are 100% ideal for support role, or are balanced at all, i feel like posting them here to discuss about it.
So let's get to it shall we? WARNING : Huge wall of text lies ahead. Tread carefully :D
- Ancient Coin
Cost : 400 g
Stats :
- 50 Health
- 5% Cooldown Reduction
Passive : UNIQUE – FAVOR: Grants 5 Gold and restores 5 health and 2 mana each time a nearby enemy minion dies that you didn't kill (1400 range).
Limitations : Limited to 1 Gold Income item.
(NOTES : Has 50 HP instead of 25% Base Mana Regen, the mana regen has been moved into the Favor passive giving a more controlled mana sustain. Generates 1 more Gold per each minion death. Cost increased by 50 gold to compensate for increased power.)
- Nomad's Medallion
Builds out of : Ancient Coin (400 g) + Faerie Charm (125 g) + Combine Cost (375 g) = 900 g
Stats :
- 50 Health
- 10% Cooldown Reduction
- 25% Base Mana Regeneration
Passive : UNIQUE – FAVOR: Grants 6 Gold and restores 10 health and 4 mana each time a nearby enemy minion dies that you didn't kill (1400 range).
Limitations : Limited to 1 Gold Income item.
(NOTES : Follow-up on Ancient Coin changes... instead of 75% Base Mana Regen has only 25% due to also having +4 mana per minion death... Same gold generation per minion death as current iteration. Cost is also increased by 50 gold to compensate for increased power.)
- Talisman of Ascension
Builds out of : Nomad's Medallion (900 g) + Raptor Cloak (1200 g) + Combine Cost (350 g) = 2450 g
Stats :
- 100 Health
- 10% Cooldown Reduction
- 25% Base Mana Regeneration
- 125% Base Health Regeneration
- 50 Armor
Passive : UNIQUE – FAVOR: Grants 8 Gold and restores 12 health and 6 mana each time a nearby enemy minion dies that you didn't kill (1400 range). UNIQUE – POINT RUNNER: Builds up to +20% movement speed over 2 seconds while near turrets and fallen turrets.
Active : UNIQUE: Grants nearby allies +30% movement speed for 4 seconds (60 second cooldown) (600 range).
Limitations : Limited to 1 Gold Income item.
(NOTES : Less % Base Health and Mana Regeneration, 5 more armor, stronger Favor passive, 10% less movement speed bonus with 1 second extended duration on active to compensate. Cost increased by 50 gold as well.)
- Spellthief's Edge
Cost : 400 g
Stats :
- 25% Base Mana Regeneration
- 10 Ability Power
- 1 Gold per 10 seconds
Passive : UNIQUE – TRIBUTE: Spells and basic attacks against champions or buildings deal 10 additional damage and grant 10 Gold. This can occur up to 3 times every 30 seconds. Killing a minion disables this passive for 12 seconds. Basic attacks deal additional damage as True damage, while spells deal it as magic damage. Damage-over-time spells, area of effect spells, summons and pets can only activate this effect once per cast for each champion hit.
Limitations : Limited to 1 Gold Income item.
(NOTES : + 5 AP, - 1 Gold per 10 ... Stronger Tribute passive with slightly different proc mechanics. Cost increased by 50 gold.)
- Frostfang
Builds out of : Spellthief's Edge (400 g) + Faerie Charm (125 g) + Combine Cost (375 g) = 900 g
Stats :
- 75% Base Mana Regeneration
- 20 Ability Power
- 2 Gold per 10 seconds
Passive : UNIQUE – TRIBUTE: Spells and basic attacks against champions or buildings deal 15 additional damage and grant 15 Gold. This can occur up to 3 times every 30 seconds. Killing a minion disables this passive for 12 seconds. Basic attacks deal additional damage as True damage, while spells deal it as magic damage. Damage-over-time spells, area of effect spells, summons and pets can only activate this effect once per cast for each champion hit.
Limitations : Limited to 1 Gold Income item.
(NOTES : + 5 AP, same Base Mana Regen and Gold generation, with similar Tribute passive, not really changed as much as other items. Similar proc mechanics with 50 gold cost increase.)
- Frost Queen's Claim
Builds out of : Frostfang (900 g) + Fiendish Codex (900 g) + Combine Cost (600 g) = 2400 g
Stats :
- 50 Ability Power
- 10% Cooldown Reduction
- 2 Gold per 10 seconds
- 100% Base Mana Regeneration
Passive : UNIQUE – TRIBUTE: Spells and basic attacks against champions or buildings deal 20 additional damage and grant 20 Gold. This can occur up to 3 times every 30 seconds. Additional damage is dealt as True damage. Damage-over-time spells, area of effect spells, summons and pets can only activate this effect once per cast for each champion hit.
Active : UNIQUE: Releases a frozen shard of the Watchers that travels in a line, granting vision 400 units around itself as it flies forward. (2500 range) If the shard spots a enemy champion it flies towards them and detonates doing 15 - 100 (based on level) (+ 25% Ability Power) (+ 150% Total Cooldown Reduction) magic damage to them, revealing them and reducing their movement speed by 30% (+ 1% for every 2% Cooldown Reduction) for 2 - 5 seconds based on distance traveled. If no enemy champion is spotted the shard returns to the caster reducing the cooldown of this active by 45 seconds. (75 seconds cooldown)
Movement speed reduction is hard-capped at 75%.
Limitations : Limited to 1 Gold Income item.
(NOTES : +25% Base Mana Regeneration, even stronger Tribute passive, fully revamped active that is better for mage support types that would use this item... Total Cooldown Reduction scaling includes ALL of the users CDR, including that which is going over the CDR Cap of 40%. Cost is increased by 200 gold to compensate for its vastly more powerful active.)
- Relic Shield
Cost : 400 g
Stats :
- 50 Health
- 5 Armor
- 1 Gold per 10 seconds
Passive : UNIQUE – SPOILS OF WAR: Melee autoattacks execute minions below 200 - 285 (based on level) health. Killing a minion by any means heals you and the nearest allied champion for 15 health and grants them kill gold. If executed by a melee attack, also grants 2 additional Gold to both champions. These effects require an allied champion within 1050 units of the user and consume a charge. Recharges every 40 seconds. Max 2 charges.
Limitations : Limited to 1 Gold Income item.
(NOTES : - 25 HP, + 5 Armor, - 1 Gold per 10 ... Spoils of War passive is even better for melee users. Cost is increased by 50 gold.)
- Targon's Brace
Builds out of : Relic Shield (400 g) + Rejuvenation Bead (150 g) + Combine Cost (350 g) = 900 g
Stats :
- 100 Health
- 50% Base Health Regeneration
- 5 Armor
- 5 Magic Resist
- 2 Gold per 10 seconds
Passive : UNIQUE – SPOILS OF WAR: Melee autoattacks execute minions below 210 - 380 (based on level) health. Killing a minion by any means heals you and the nearest allied champion for 40 health and grants them kill gold. If executed by a melee attack, also grants 4 additional Gold to both champions. These effects require an allied champion within 1050 units of the user and consume a charge. Recharges every 30 seconds. Max 3 charges.
Limitations : Limited to 1 Gold Income item.
(NOTES : - 75 HP, + 5 Armor and MR, even better Spoils of War passive. Cost increased by 50 gold.)
- Face of the Mountain
Builds out of : Targon's Brace (900 g) + Kindlegem (800 g) + Combine Cost (650 g) = 2350 g
Stats :
- 300 Health
- 100% Base Health Regeneration
- 15 Armor
- 15 Magic Resist
- 10% Cooldown Reduction
- 2 Gold per 10 seconds
Passive : UNIQUE – SPOILS OF WAR: Melee basic attacks execute minions below 340 - 680 (based on level) health. Killing a minion by any means heals you and the nearest allied champion for 50 health and grants them kill gold. If executed by a melee attack, also grants 5 additional Gold to both champions. These effects require an allied champion within 1050 units of the user. Recharges every 30 seconds. Max 4 charges.
Active : UNIQUE: Grant a shield to yourself and an ally equal to 20 - 200 (based on level) (+5% of your maximum health) for 4 seconds. After 4 seconds, the shield explodes to slow nearby enemies by 40% for 2 seconds (60 second cooldown).
Limitations : Limited to 1 Gold Income item.
(NOTES : - 150 HP, + 15 Armor and MR, even better Spoils of War passive, Active's Shield now has base values + % max HP scaling. Cost increased by 150 gold to compensate for better active.)
- Sightstone
Cost : 400 g
Active : UNIQUE – WARDING: Consumes a charge to place a Stealth Ward that reveals the surrounding area for 150 seconds. Holds up to 2 charges which refill upon visiting the shop.
Limitations : A player may only have 3 Stealth Wards on the map at one time. Cannot be purchased until 5 minutes into the game.
(NOTES : Okay so this is a big change, the fact that it costs a whooping 400 gold less means that supports have a much easier access to early warding, allowing faster access to other supporting items as well. However, it no longer has 150 HP and only holds 2 wards instead of the usual 3. Also it can't be bought until after 5 minutes into the game.)
- Ruby Sightstone
Builds out of : Sightstone (400 g) + Ruby Crystal (400 g) + Combine Cost (50 g) = 850 g
Stats :
- 150 Health
Passive: UNIQUE : Item Active cooldowns are reduced by 10%.
Active : UNIQUE – WARDING: Consumes a charge to place a Stealth Ward that reveals the surrounding area for 150 seconds. Holds up to 3 charges which refill upon visiting the shop.
Limitations : A player may only have 3 Stealth Wards on the map at one time.
(NOTES : It is essentially what the current Sightstone is with the 10% Item Active cooldown reduction on top of it as a little bit of extra. Costs 50 gold more than what the current Sightstone does however.)

- 450 Health
- 300 Mana
- 10 % Cooldown Reduction
Passive: UNIQUE : Item Active cooldowns are reduced by 20%. UNIQUE – ETERNITY: 15% of damage taken from champions is gained as mana. Spending mana restores 20% of mana spent as health, up to 15 per cast (toggle spells heal for up to 15 per second).
Active : UNIQUE – WARDING: Consumes a charge to place a Stealth Ward that reveals the surrounding area for 150 seconds. Holds up to 4 charges which refill upon visiting the shop.
Limitations : A player may only have 3 Stealth Wards on the map at one time.
(NOTES : This one is new... So Catalyst and Sightstone had a baby... Costs a whooping 550 gold more than the current Ruby Sightstone, but is also loaded with useful stats, and has Catalyst's Eternity passive. For those who don't want to go down the Eye line of warding items and can afford it.)
- Eye of the Oasis
Builds out of : Ruby Sightstone (850 g) + Nomad's Medallion (900 g) + Combine Cost (300 g) = 2050 g
Stats :
- 250 Health
- 50% Base Mana Regeneration
- 10% Cooldown Reduction
Passive : UNIQUE : Item Active cooldowns are reduced by 20%. UNIQUE – FAVOR : Grants 8 Gold and restores 12 health and 6 mana each time a nearby enemy minion dies that you didn't kill (1400 range).
Active : UNIQUE – WARDING: Consumes a charge to place a Stealth Ward that reveals the surrounding area for 150 seconds. Holds up to 4 charges which refill upon visiting the shop.
Limitations : Limited to 1 Gold Income item. A player may only have 3 Stealth Wards on the map at one time.

- Eye of the Watchers
Builds out of : Ruby Sightstone (850 g) + Frostfang (900 g) + Combine Cost (550 g) = 2300 g
Stats :
- 200 Health
- 100 % Base Mana Regeneration
- 10 % Cooldown Reduction
- 30 Ability Power
- 2 Gold per 10 seconds
Passive : UNIQUE : Item Active cooldowns are reduced by 20%. UNIQUE – TRIBUTE: Spells and basic attacks against champions or buildings deal 20 additional damage and grant 20 Gold. This can occur up to 3 times every 30 seconds. Additional damage is dealt as True damage. Damage-over-time and multi-hit spells can only activate this effect once per cast for each champion hit. Summons and pets cannot activate this effect.
Active : UNIQUE – WARDING: Consumes a charge to place a Stealth Ward that reveals the surrounding area for 150 seconds. Holds up to 4 charges which refill upon visiting the shop.
Limitations : Limited to 1 Gold Income item. A player may only have 3 Stealth Wards on the map at one time.
(NOTES : + 5 AP, Other stats are exactly the same, has 20% Item Active cooldown reduction now and the best Tribute passive version. Cost is increased by 100 gold from the current version to compensate for it however.)
- Eye of the Equinox
Builds out of : Ruby Sightstone (850 g) + Targon's Brace (900 g) + Combine Cost (650 g) = 2400 g
Stats :
- 500 Health
- 15 Armor
- 15 Magic Resist
- 10% Cooldown Reduction
- 2 Gold per 10 seconds
Passive : UNIQUE : Item Active cooldowns are reduced by 20%. UNIQUE – SPOILS OF WAR : Melee autoattacks execute minions below 340 - 680 (based on level) health. Killing a minion by any means heals you and the nearest allied champion for 50 health and grants them kill gold. If executed by a melee attack, also grants 5 additional Gold to both champions.
