Smartcasts

Hello Riot Team!

I have a very interesting idea for you. It has to do with the smartcast feature. I think it could be improved a bit in the following way: different smartcast feature depending on the champion we are playing as (namely shapeshifting champions like Rek'Sai, Elise or Gnar). For instance, while being underground as Rek'Sai our E would not work anymore with the smartcast feature since it's desired to be able to see the range while being underground. However, upon surfacing the smartcast feature would work once again since the range feature is not as important anymore (or the oher way around, depending on the preferances). All that it takes to improve smartcast is to add an additional checkmark at the smartcast window that would allow us to activate different smartcast options for shapeshifting champions. I do realise of course that you can use shift to determine range while being on Rek'sai however, it's just another button you need to master which slows you down. Seeing we already have a smartcast option it would be nice to have it working properly for all the champions. It would be even better to be able to customise smartcast for every single champion just like it was introduced not long ago with customisable items. This would get rid of the problem of customising smartcast options before every single game with a new champion. Attaching a scheme ilustrating the problem.

All best wishes!

Psst. Scroll all the way down that Hotkey Options page and there's an option to always show range on smartcast abilities (hold the ability key to show range). I don't think I could play Thresh or Blitz half as well without it.

I know, but it doesnt solve the problem. its still smartcast.

It solves the particular problem that I quoted, and is something you can do right now to improve your play. I agree with your larger idea.

Oh ok, thx for reply.

It kinda does. If this option is enabled, spell is cast "on release" rather than "on press". In other words, you can hold spell button down to keep showing range and it won't cast. Moreover, you can cancel the spellcast with a mouse click while you're holding the button. It also works the same way for items. I think all that's needed is to properly document this feature and demonstrate it in tutorial. Also, I'm the one who decides when "the range feature is not as important anymore" for me, not anyone else.

I believe that's the difference between quick cast and smart cast quick is on release and smart is on press

This problem is already completely solved, just check the box waaaaaay down at the bottom of the Hotkeys menu that says "Show range indicators" (can't remember precisely what it says, but close enough).

Normal cast means you first click the skill key to show the range, then left click to cast it. Smartcast plus this checkbox means you can skip the left click, and instead hold down the skill key to see the range, and cast it by releasing the key.

Smartcasting everything is and always has been the most efficient method, as it allows you to skip the left click while still keeping all functionality of normal cast.

there are some abilities i like to have on normal cast ie: Varus and Vi's Q's. It just seems more natural to me.

Doesn't change the fact that every ability is better off being smartcasted. Literally every single one.

even the ones that charge up just hold it longer, in the middle of a teamfight most ppl really just panic and smack buttons if you gotta click twice then that adds seconds in between casting of spells and every second counts inna teamfight.

Veigar E and the like are not

Veigar E and the like are not

Don't mistake the player in question not being good at smartcasting to smartcasting being less efficient than normal casting.

It's not good to smartcast Veigar E because of how it works. The center spawns where your mouse is, but only the edges stun so it is pretty tricky. I smartcast it because i prob played like 1000+ games of Veigar so i know how it works, but to a newbie to Veigar i wouldn't really recommend.

All other skills are better smartcasted though ye. Only skills i don't smartcast are Viktor E and Rumble ult, because like you said, i suck at smartcasting them.

I'm going to just quote what I just said.

Everything is.

Learn the range Use the range

There is no ability in this game that benefits from being delayed outside of certain charged abilities. In which case, hold the button.

You have a choice between smartcast and normal cast because some may prefer one while, others the other. For example, I have friends that like having the option of smart cast on for some of their skills while keeping the others on normal cast. You can of course play the game with all skills set on smart cast and use the option "show range indicators" however, this forces the player to, in a way, learn the game once again from scratch. It's just as if you'd say that there is no need for customisable hot keys since everybody can get used to the basic settings. Customisable interface, hotkeys, smartcasts etc. are a part of the game because everybody likes to play the game in their own way. I only wanted to point out that smartcasts aren't actually fully customisable (like hotkeys etc.) seeing you can't really link every single skill with a different smartcast option in the case of shapeshifting champions. Following your chain of though we should completely get rid of the possibility of disabling smart cast in the game seeing everybody should be capable of getting used to it. I believe the game is not suppossed to be there so that you can "get used to it" but just to have fun.

Whoops, that came out far more aggressive than I intended. My intent was to say that smartcast is inherently more efficient, due to fewer required actions, but despite that, it's not for everyone. Everyone is perfectly entitled to their own preferences, and I have no right to try to change that.

Good suggestion. It would be cool if you could permanently set it up for one champion too. Like I always want my q to be smartcast, unless I'm playing Blitz.

Your mom is a smartcast. Nuff said.

I wish I could have a different smartcast setting for each Champion, would be awesome. Ali? smartcast that W (high ping), it's annoying when I have to change every time i change champions.
