Mages - Whats Wrong?

As the information came out about mages getting a rework, there have been multiple accounts of anger and distaste from many fans of specific mages. Specifically, the "big 6" changes have become a controversy where people are complaining about not trusting the changes and fearing that a champion will be ruined. For example, Vel Koz has received a large amount of worry and as a dedicated vel koz player, I don't see why people are so worried. Riot has reworked many many champions through these past seasons, and through all the tweaks and updates, they have almost always made each champion better. Fiona was a very popular champion before her rework and had a lot of people who loved to play her, and when the rework hit the live servers, there was a lot of distaste and anger met with it, but as people continued to play with her, it was clear that she was improved and clearly better then before. But back to mages. I must agree that mages, as a class are quite stale/bland due to the fact that almost all of their abilities follow a similar pattern. Every mage has some sort of ranged cc, a ranged ability for poke, and usually has a devastating ult. Vel Koz, Zyra, Lux, Brand, and even Malzahar are a few champs who follow these guide lines. So already, I agree that a lot of mages feel the same. But a lot of mages do have a distinct play style too that many players enjoy, like Vlad, Cassiopeia, Vel koz, and Malzahar. But we must all consider that these updates won't be entire re hauls, just major touch ups. When i look at these champs its easy to see how they are falling out of the meta and they feel little clunky. Vlads abilities don't feel significatly special, he has ranged poke, more ranged dmg, and a pool. Personally, I think you could touch up Vlad a bit more by giving him a new mechanic that makes his abilities feel more impactful, like renekton. But I also think you should keep his pool. Zyra needs a huge rework. She feels clunky, and she doesn't fit any real team comp. Her abilities don't flow really well and her whole concept isn't shown well. So just rework all of her. Cassiopeia is overall still a unique champion, so i don't think you have to change much, but perhaps you could make her E feel a little less impactful, and allow her to have better and easier ways of poisoning people rather then throwing small weird looking pools on the ground. And Malz just needs to keep his ult. Cause that let makes Malz Malz. All in all, if we can look at these reworks as an opportunity to make our favorite champs more unique, then our community can look at these changes with a new interest, and instead of bashing riot for keeping are champs up-to-date, encourage them for keeping the champ pool interesting.

the problem with mages is they cant stop dives, their utility abilities have been over nerfed for a long time now. they aren't allowed to have early game poke anymore. and their damage is now just on par with other champions now. so why play a mage?

Morgana Orianna Syndra Swain Veigar Ziggs Zyra Zilean Leblanc

they've all been nerfed. and some minor buffs that they've had in the past is just a cover up for the issues that they now have. its a high skill cap just to stay on par with most other point and click champions or auto based champs.

its much more difficult to play these champs who although have the potential to be great, it just doesnt happen reliably enough every game making them snowbally hit/miss playstyles.

overall they do need some changes just to breathe again.

Lol I have no idea where mages get this 'short end of the stick' mentality when mid lane mage probably still has the highest solo carrying capacity even during the current meta which is unfavorable to mages, just ask Dynamic Queue times.

For the most part their playstyle isn't "hit or miss", it's "miss until you get a hit"

Veigar was picked more times at worlds than Zed in summer split NA LCS and 2015 world's combined.

Keep in mind this is an environment where 4 v 1 and 5 v 1 dives are EVERYWHERE, teamwork is insane.

If you can't deal with dives as a mage you're playing the mage wrong.

its almost like a 37% win rate means nothing..... in a game where the objective is to take the enemy nexus, veigar is terrible at it or he can be outright played around and destroyed due to his major play style flaws.

namely dives poke and ganks, which he CANT defend against anymore. and once you lose your mid lane carry.... its very unfavorable, especially when they die before they even get the chance to put down their utility spell.

{quoted} Going on prior reworks... a few have gone well but most have gone poorly. Many have done little but alienate old fans of the reworked champion without really doing much for the champion's pick rates or win rates. Almost all of them have ALSO brought about long periods of broken gameplay as the shiny new champion was OP as hell... followed by deserved nerfs and then a fall back to obscurity again... only now without the old fans love and support.
