Best Tips for Countering Riven in Lane

Salty Carrot··1 votes·800 views

I'm not trying to flame or say Riven needs a nerf I just would like some good advice on how not to feed this champ. I almost always get destroyed by her even when playing passively because she CS's very well. Any specific champs that work well also against her would be nice.

She has a pretty long cooldown on her Q (13 seconds at all ranks) when she doesn't have any CDR items. Note the cooldown starts ticking down as soon as she casts her first Q. You can use that window to harass and cs safely. Early item 1031 helps a lot.

Garen Chogath are both nightmare's also anyone that has a form of silence can do very well against Riven.

Playing Cho would you take his silence level 1?

SexyTaylorSwift2 votes

No. Take E as lane Cho.

Against a Riven, I would take silence or the knockup at level 1, Riven's will try to level 2 cheese you whenever possible, providing as much annoying interruption to that is more important as you'll take a lot of harass if you start E instead.

Personally the only way I've ever really done well when I'm forced top is to play someone like Lissandra. Lissandra 's Q can slow her down when she decides to try and trade with you. When she gets close your W can root her and give you time to move back/AA. If she tries to cs throw your Q/AA. Before six if things get really hairy just use your E to get out of dodge. Your ult can be used both offensively and defensively. Ex: if you get ahead and win a fight, it's a great means to finish her off or catch her as your jungler comes to gank. On the other hand, Rivens have a nasty habit of diving and nothing says denied quite like a Lissandra ult under turret. All in all, Liss is pretty... cool and is a great champ for the cc she brings to shut down Riven laning/mid game when she really thrives the most, but mind your lack of mobility and you could totally win! =D__

Hey thanks for the reply definitely considering getting this champ.

Olaf does well. He can build tank and still chunk Riven with his E. Olaf is just a badass and I take vs.anyone top lane.

I've done well with Irelia vs Riven. Armor quints, armor yellows and start cloth 5 and Riven isnt much of a threat. Irelia is my favorite top lane champ because she's a brawler making lane phase fun.

Vs Riven if you dont feed her and cs well you win lane. If she takes ignite watch for her lvl 2-3 cheese all in. Pretty much wait for her cooldowns then trade with her. Stay a safe distance away and if she is coming at you back off because she can cover some distance. If she cant harrass you she cant kill you and eventually she Will push the wave in your favor. Try and freeze your lane outside your tower range. And ping when she is missing because she will either go mid or try and kill your jjungler because she needs kills to be a serious threat.

The biggest piece of advice I can give you is to not play a champion you're not comfortable with. Picking a counter to a champion only works if you are actually skilled with the counter. It's always better to lose lane and come back mid/late game with a champion you know how to play than to lose lane and have no idea what to do mid/late game.

Just keep in mind, people who main easily countered champions practice those countered matchups. They know what to do, make sure you do too.

I like to pick Tryndamere against Riven

You'll outsustain and outscale, and if the Riven player sucks you'll even outcheese her lvl 2. Your W will make her entire combo a lot weaker, and you can easily juke her with E.

But withTryndamere he is a feast or famine champion that has to get ahead to stay relevant same with someone like Pantheon

I'll typically take a lane bully of some sort. I've had luck with Darius and Renekton. Cho'gath and Garen work due to that silence, as any silence is absolutely devastating to melee champions with casting as a large portion of their damage.

Renekton obviously provides more to your team than Darius does, which is why I prefer him, but if you're really uncomfortable against a Riven, go Darius. When she goes for CS Q her, you'll shove her out of lane so fast she'll be irrelevant the whole game, she'll be scared to try and CS, and eventually you can just all in her and slaughter her every time she comes back to lane. You'll burn your mana pretty quick, so I recommend picking up a mana potion when you back.

Not sure if it was skill of the enemy, but I did pretty well with Sion.

Take flack health pot start. Do the suicide jungle start for an early level 2 and TP into lane. Try using your Q to Zone Riven Away from farm and counter her engages. Use your flask when you need it to hold out the length of your TP or until you reach level 6. Rush Frozen Heart. TP back to lane to avoid losing CS (if your endanger of losing CS) or if you ults available use instead of TP to get back to lane. Final note is if your Jungler comes to visit, Your Ult is excellent in setting up a gank. It's also good for escaping a gank as long as your not completely flanked. His ult has a multitude of uses, which is why your rush frozen heart in an AD matchup.

Survive riven in the laning phase and you will be better off in the late game.

Almost all of her damage output is through auto attacks, and she has several steroids in the form of resets and her passive. She also has incredible mobility in that she can dash to you and keep you locked down. Ninja Tabi first item permanently reduces all of her damage output by reducing the damage of her basic attacks. This item will also help you kite her mobility out in the early laning phase.

Whenever you get allin'd at level 6 remember you deserve to lose.

Riven says thanks for not buying item 1031 :)

Riven is a dirty ho-bag top. You need to expect that she will be strong and aggressive out of the gate. If you play against her early-game strength with someone who is also strong early you're taking on a lot of risk. You might shut he down or you might get her snowballing. If you play defensive and just try to outscale her she'll abuse you all lane and possibly snowball as well.

As said... Garen is prob the safest pick. He just sits there being a fat tanky pile of Garen and laughs at her. Olaf works well too, since he can stack armor against her and still do dat true damage, and he has innate sustain on his W to keep him at high health. I personally also take Pantheon against her, but I wouldn't recommend that unless you're very comfortable with the match up, since it's very risky. I'm pretty decent at punishing yolotard aggression as Panth, but not everyone can.

Think of Riven the same way you'd think of Master Yi. She is GOING to become a huge pain in the ass unless the team makes it a priority to hold her down and step on her face. Try to set her back in lane, and when roaming and teamfights happen she needs to get stunned and blown up when she saunters into them. Otherwise she will dash-cheese all over your team with her AoE garbage and rip you a new one even if she's behind, and she'll be perfectly content to trade a death for a kill and knocking the rest of your team to 1/2 health. Devote yourself to wrecking her all game with someone like Darius , Garen or Olaf
