Irelia seems like a great candidate for being split into two champions.

From what I recall, Irelia's one of the higher candidates for a VGU due to the fact that she ... really doesn't hit her theme of some telekinetic sword dancer in the slightest. And I completely agree with that - all that theme boils down to is her E having more range than it'd maybe have if she used a normal sword. The one ability she has that remotely makes use of her telekinetic bond with her blades is her ultimate ... but only vaguely, because it involves her summoning a bunch of completely different swords to through down in a line, supposedly not even real ones but ones made out of spirit energy or something.

It's pretty lame, to be honest.

However, while she complete flops at the telekinetic sword dancer theme, her current kit does match up pretty solidly with the other half of her identity: a warrior-lich of Ionia that beat death through a combination of Ionian mysticism and sheer force of will.

That's why I feel like it would be plausible to base her reworked kit on her current one by dropping the telekinetic sword dancer theme and focusing more on the questionably alive yet heavily determined to stay that way warrior ( something that would be pretty baffling to do on the vice-versa, because there's basically nothing of value in it for the other theme ), which does sound like the kind of thing that would be one of the premiere examples of a diver, and replacing the Hiten blades with a more traditional ( if similar-looking ) sword. The telekinetic sword dancer is something I'd definitely want to see given better potential, but that could be explored with a completely new champion specifically designed for whatever remote-controlled blade shenanigans you guys come up with.

I mean, don't get me wrong. I'm completely expecting her kit to end up remarkably different either way. It's just that doing it this way seems like a way to avoid Sioning her, where she ends up as a completely different class, while still avoiding giving up on the fantasy of the telekinetic sword dancer ( which sounds like it'd be some kind of physical damage mage far more than it sounds like a diver ).

Why would they do that when they already have Tryndamere for that theme? Even Olaf, despite WANTING to die, also goes into the whole theme of not dying through sheer strength and force of will. There's no point to preserving that thematic on her when there's already two other warriors that fit that already and her voice over has very little characterization in it as is.

I do understand your concern.

Sion went from being a skirmisher to being a tank.

That said, too many fail to acknowledge how much of that awkward, outdated, and gimmicky kit was preserved in his rework. In all honesty, Riot payed a lot of respect to old Sion.

The champion as a whole gained a new coehsive direction, as it is undeniable that his current playstyle fits much more his theme and identity.

Now, irelia will probably suffer a similar fate in her upcoming rework, and I believe there is a lot to be gained in terms of character fantasy and gameplay uniqueness.

I'd expect her to shift more towards a "sorta-ranged-magey skirmisher", but i think the rework has the potential to be done with regards to her playerbase and current gameplay, and there is no need for a total decoupling like you suggest.

I wanted to pitch an Irelia rework that makes her like a physical Aurelion Sol. give her a handful of rotating blades that she interacts with via abilities.

My vote is don't change Irelia at all...but that's because I rode her to plat a few seasons ago and don't want my main to be changed =(

As a long time irelia main, im down for some serious changes to help her fit her identity. I just hope that more than anything they keep her Q reset mechanic. No matter how you may feel about irelia, utilizing her q to its fullest potential take some skill (and is very very satisfying to pull off). But thats just my 2 cents

Was gonna downvote because I despise people that say things like "Irelia should be reworked!" but then I actually read the post and agreed completely :D

I really do want Riot to upgrade her model and skins though. Partially because I own every single one of her skins because every time the "Your shop" was added, I always got Irelia skins for super good discounts :I

Maybe they can make her both champions in one, like Jayce, Toggle R to split her blades and become ranged.

Well, if Riot finally decides to work on the Divers class this next Pre-Season I would say Irelia is a pretty big candidate for it. We will have to wait and see unfortunately...

Riot is slowing down the release on new champions and they will start to update older champions more often...and theres quite lot of them that need some love.

About splitting her into two...who knows what Riot is planning.

just give her Shen Q

and then we give shen his old q back

I completely agree. Also, on the gameplay side, I believe Irelia is either too tanky or has too much damage for her own good.

ZT Xperimentor6/5/2017, 3:45:28 PM1 votes

I'd say there's more overloaded (and coincidentally popular) candidates than her.

FlameHalbrdOkido6/5/2017, 11:23:52 PM1 votes

I think I agree with this, slightly change Irelia's identity so it fits the current kit and update the kit

and then give us a new champ with telekinetic blades.

This probs wont happen tho, i fully expect them to change her kit to match the identity they wanted, and they will def pay homage to the old irelia's kit, but the new one will be much cooler, but who knos

sometimes old abilities may reappear slightly changed in newer champs

Sounds like Aurelion Sol with swords. Not sure if I like that or not.

But yeah, even Shen fits that theme better than Irelia does.
