What happens when you play ranked games? How does it apply to your standing next season?

During the pre-season you can continue to play ranked and continue to rank higher. Once the next season starts, no one is ranked anymore and you have to do 10 provisional games. Playing more ranked during the pre-season can still help raise your ELO and MMR, so say you are Silver in season 4 (this current season that just ended) and you played ranked during pre-season and managed to get to Diamond. Once the next season starts and you do your provisionals. You have a way better chance of getting placed in Diamond straight off the bat.
