Dumb shits aside, play who you are comfortable with and who might benefit your team. If you have an AD heavy team pick AP, AP heavy team pick an AD. If you don't have a tank you will need to have one or at least pick into a composition if you don't play tanks. Buy pinks, they are only like 2 minions worth and don't push top out unless if you are confident in 2v1'ing. In lower elo these champions pretty much stomp most people:
The idea is that if you have mobility, you will have more chances to correct a mistake or survive a mistake. If you have a bullshit save ability, you will also be able to survive. Or if you can spawn a billion tentacles and do as much damage as an adc while also being very tanky and healing from every attack.
