Voice chat

Recently I played solo ranked where my entire team went on discord. And that was literally the best games I have ever played with strangers in my entire league of legends history. I just simply could not understand why voice chat isnt part of the game. That would improve community significantly and increase overall skill level of players.

It's great you had a good experience, for the most part game's I've played with VC it was very helpful, but I found myself using mute a lot for varying purposes. Trolls, bad mics, little kids cursing to sound cool.

League would experience all the problems and more no doubt, unfortunately this community as a whole cannot be given nice things they must behave with. Monitoring VC is nearly impossible, can you imagine the amount of times someone would say nothing all game and suddenly join because a player did something wrong screaming at the top of their lungs, YOU GARBAGE KID!!! then turning it off again.

True muting can work, but in reality like positional ranking, it boils down to misuse vs resources invested and usually misuse wins.

Maybe riot could default it to be always off until you unmute someone on your team. Because in reality, you don't need to hear your entire team at all times. But bot lanes having the option to communicate if they wanted would be cool imo.

Maybe enable it in diamond and higher as a test run and then see the results.

That option is already there?

What option? You can't even chat with non-premades.

The option to have voice chat always off by default.

Another issue might be: voice chat is actually a big advantage, if one side has it, and the other doesn't. Whereas, text chat is not such a big advantage, and could even be considered a disadvantage, and the information can almost always be communicated by pings, voice chat allows for more complicated ideas to be expressed. If VC became a feature of soloq, then a mic, which was never required equipment for this game, pretty much becomes obligatory.

The game is designed to run serviceably on primitive equipment. Even now, it may be seen the VC that IS implemented, has a noticeable resource cost.

League can be played now, without audio, with relatively little impact on gameplay. With VC implementation, that would no longer be the case.

Many players would also find it a practical difficulty, not being fluent in English verbally, even if they can follow text chat. Real Verbal communication skills, currently not a requirement for this game, would become relevant.

We don't even want DUOS in soloq.

Voice Chat would introduce all kinds of random imbalance equivalent almost like having flex and soloq combined into one queue. Everybody would feel the impact, and nobody would like it.

(Riot LIKES frustrating imbalance, but they actually only want it when they can control it.)

I think that this is probably the bigger, main reason. VC would have the effect of turning soloq into a less (!) balanced version of flex.

The policing issues is probably solvable. But the basic unfairness that VC would add, is probably not.

It's no a problem in csgo, so idk why it should be an issue here.

No it wouldnt not be like flex. And its kinda bold of you to say "nobody would like it". Just because you dont like it doesnt mean no1 else wouldnt like it.

Who're "we"? People who're looking for anything to use as an excuse for not climbing?

I'm not sure that the reality of whether or not it would be good is the only salient factor.

I think that many players share the PERCEPTION that this is what would happen. You (not necessarily YOU personally) wanted to know why people don't want it, if they could just mute it. I think that this is the reason why they don't want it.

Just because some players dont want it doesnt mean it wouldnt be a good feature. Why do i think it would be good feature? because this is a team game, and one of important factors in such games is communication. And whats the most efficient way to communicate? Voice chat, because it takes less time to say something than to type it, and it's not one-dimensional like pings.

Would there be some toxic lads in VC? Yes. Would there be some players with shitty mic/no mid? Yes.

But those things arent that common. So is it rly okay to not implement VC for SoloQ, the most efficient strategic feature, simply because you will have some bad experiences here and there, despite being able to opt out of it?

I wasn't going to pursue this, but now I have to.

How can VC for SoloQ be "the most efficient strategic feature" and at the same time, not be unfair to players on teams that can't or don't utilize it?

The same can be asked for regular chat and pings. Some players dont use it at all. By that logic we should get rid of chat and pings, since some people dont use it and can be used for toxic purposes.

And saying some players wouldnt use it doesnt deny the fact its a better form of communication than chat or pings.

And it's not like you cant utilize VC AT ALL. Even if you dont have a mic I assume every1 plays league with sounds turned on. So you can simply hop on voice, and listen to your teams callouts while youre responding in chat or in pings.

A lil bit scuffed but it does the job.

Not really, though, because we have come to the point where pinging is considered a game skill. It's almost like warding. (I think that you made an argument for my side.) (Team gets mad if you don't ping "enemy missing" etc)

So, my experience is, that some players tell me that they can't play with audio, because it's late at night, they have people around/over.

You see where this is going?

I'm relieved if I can just get through a whole match where nobody afk or dc or had terrible lag etc.... Adding VC means adding another critical factor for ten randoms to somehow conform.

A skill that can be used for toxicity, same as VC. A skill that can be ignored and/or not used, same as VC. Its a way to communicate, same as VC. But VC is faster and the messasge you wanna send is more clear than using pings.

So pings have the same pros and cons as VC, and yet youre only against VC, which logically makes no sense.

So, my experience is, that some players tell me that they can't play with audio, because it's late at night, they have people around/over.

Headphones exist. And dont tell me you cant afford some cheap headphones cuz if u have money for a PC,keyboard, mouse and a stable internet connection you definitely have money for headset.

You see where this is going?

Yes, in circles. No matter what excuse you use, the matter of fact is that VC is being used in most of competitive games, such as csgo, ow, dota, etc. and it works just fine.

The problem with the League community is that riot made them feel like special kids who cant do no wrong nor can be called out for doing something wrong. I mean ffs we came to the point where saying "ggez" is considered toxic...like, wtf? If some1 told me it will be considered toxic back when I was a 15 y/o twat I would find it funny, let alone toxic. Now when im fucking 21 Im just baffled...im wondering if im the one insane here for thinking thats no big deal. The community was sheltered from any kind of negativity for too long. Giving them VC would expose them to negative criticism, which this sheltered community wouldnt be able to handle, which is quite sad.

I didn't say a word about toxicity. I said that if VC was implemented then using VC would become obligatory because it is so strong that a team that didn't use it would have a disadvantage. That means that players would be required to have equipment that could use it AND ALSO be comfortable expressing themselves and especially following a conversation in the server dominant language.

Then you mentioned pings.

Well. originally, pings were optional. And, technically, they still are, but even pings are so important that if a player doesn't use pings, then he probably, situationally, puts his team at a disadvantage. (If Riot could figure out a game metric that fairly measured good usage of pings, then I believe that they probably would.)

Everybody needs to ping. And if VC was implemented in Soloq, then everybody would need to participate.

Headphones exist. And dont tell me you cant afford some cheap headphones cuz if u have money for a PC,keyboard, mouse and a stable internet connection you definitely have money for headset.

I would tend to agree with you. I'm telling you that I used to walk players through all of this in pre-game lobby, before they even added the premade VC. And I would say, hey, just get the handsfree from your phone and plug it into your computer...

Nevertheless, some people insist that they don't have. However, besides that, a bigger issue is that using LoL VC has a negative effect on fps, and this is significant on many computers that otherwise play LoL just fine. (Whereas, a 3rd party can be used on mobile phone, and doesn't affect fps.)

Yes, in circles. No matter what excuse you use, the matter of fact is that VC is being used in most of competitive games, such as csgo, ow, dota, etc. and it works just fine.

But LoL is a lot bigger than all of those. One of the main understated reasons why LoL is so popular, is that it can be played on ANY system. You don't even need a graphics card. For a lot of people this is their only game, because this is literally the only game (one of the very few) that they can play.

The VC that is currently in the game for pre-mades, is actually bad. That's what I'm telling you. It's buggy. It works fine for a lot of people, I'm sure, but after every patch where they upgraded it last year, people were complaining about low fps and lag, and i said, DISCONNECT FROM LOL VC AND ALSO MUTE YOUR MIC IN LOL VC, and then, they were able to play. This still happens, many players do not even have the VC icon appear on the bottom of their screen in-game.

My feeling is that if VC were a reality then it would negate as much toxicity as it could ever possibly create. So many problems are resulting from misunderstandings that would become apparent in real conversation. The more that I think about it, I'm convinced that the main issue is actually about inequality and fairness in play.

As an experiment, you should try doing for a month or two, what I been doing for two years, about offering public Discord to your random team. And see if you don't agree with my impression, after a couple months of this.

Again, a lot of people have at least a headphones, mic is optional. As long as I have a teammates that can listen to my calls through VC thats fine. And you dont need to have some language knowledge to communicate. If I can communicate with russian 14-yr olds just fine, I dont think League players will have an issue.

Then you mentioned pings.

Youre the one who said oinging is considered a skill so ye.

I didnt hear about that at all. But thas just riot being incompetent. That doesnt mean VC is a bad idea, riot just needs to be competent.

For a lot of people this is their only game, because this is literally the only game (one of the very few) that they can play.

So because it's popular it doesnt need new features? -.- And VC has no effect on performance. If it does, its riots fault. LoL being bigger means shit when csgo is way more competitive even at the lowest lvl of play than LoL will ever be. And thats because of VC.

The VC that is currently in the game for pre-mades, is actually bad. That's what I'm telling you. It's buggy. By that logic VC wouldnt work in other games, and yet it does.

I dont have to. I already have a lil bit under 1k hours in csgo. And keep in mind that game doesnt punish toxicity. And I had rly good experiences overall.

True Garen1 votes

By that logic VC wouldnt work in other games, and yet it does.

The other games generally require more sophisticated equipment than LoL does (a graphics card) and therefore, they have much smaller populations than LoL.

To some extent, Gaming is exclusive. You generally need equipment of a certain degree to play games. LoL has system requirements that are much lower than all of the games that you mentioned. Many people who play LoL now, would not be able to run those other games. Adding VC to their system is a not a practical reality. (And this is not a small number of players, either. I know that this is "anecdotal" but in my adventures introducing random teammates to voice chat, I discovered this this seems to be a generous percentage. I'm on NA server. Possibly on other servers the percentage of older machines is even much higher. (And on some other server, perhaps much lower.))

Discord works better than LoL VC, in general. Just stick with Discord. The LoL VC is still quite buggy, a lot of computers have issues with it. You can tell when they are doing work on the VC implementation after a patch, there's always a lot of people having all kinds of throttling. (I understand that it works great most of the time, for most players.)

You can put Discord on your phone, and not spend any resources on the VC. (Yes, turning off LoL VC and muting your mic in the LoL VC, can increase your FPS etc...)

I usually post my Discord link in the pre-game. if one person responds then my team has an advantage. (And this way, really don't need to worry about toxic voice. Usually only friendlies will respond. I'm capable of policing the channel myself, if need be.) (But I've only needed to do it once, in a thousand times.)

Saezio1 votes

So, since you already use VC with those willing to use it.

The implementation of a VC in LoL would have 0 effect on you. So, why are you so against it? because your team would be able to have VC without you feeling like you "provided the gift of hearing"?

Probably fewer than %10 take me up on my offer. This should be another indicator of the general opinion on this matter.

Another %20 actually respond "no mic". (There are probably many others, these are just the ones who feel obliged to make an excuse.)

The percentage of people using older equipment, or even equipment that isn't so old, but the performance would be affected by VC, is also significant. (They tell me these things after they come into my Discord on their phone.)

There's a lot of threads on this forum from people complaining about queuing into a 4-man premade. It almost always feels like being trolled (they say). If VC was implemented, then that would be the experience for those people, every game.

Only about 1/100 of %1 ever post anything on these boards, but that particular complaint comes up here about once a week. So, it's probably a lot of people that would feel the same way.

Conversely, if YOU and others who felt like you, would start doing what I do, then the day might come when Riot would feel forced to add VC to SoloQ, since so many players are already using it with 3rd party.

Saezio1 votes

What does a 4-man premade in a normal game have to do with being able to communicate between 5 strangers?

Only about 1/100 of %1 ever post anything on these boards, but that particular complaint comes up here about once a week.

And how often does voice chat make it here?

Just to be clear, I only use voice chat with a couple best friends. I want to see it being implemented because I feel like that is the correct decision for promoting this game's competitive nature. I am impartial. Just voicing an opinion. It doesn't affect me in the slightest. I just enjoy debating about the game I care about.

Then my suggestion would be, make a discord server for this purpose, and start offering the link in your game lobbies.

(You should ESPECIALLY do this when you play with your 3-man, as a courtesy to the randos.)

If 3rd party VC in SoloQ starts to become popular, then Riot may bring it into the game.

Just paste the Discord link into a browser and you're in. Even if you never used Discord before. I'll believe if somebody says that they have no mic. I don't believe that somebody played to lvl 30 and still never used Discord. Or at least, shortly thereafter. (Yes, I know there are SOME players who really never did... but the vast majority, of course...)

Anyway, if somebody cares about an issue then they should start to take action to make a change. Riot isn't going to implement the feature EVEN IF an outpouring of request arose on this forum. They'll respond to "facts on the ground". (That's why they even added VC for pre-mades. Pre-mades were ALREADY using VC in 3rd party.) When significant numbers of players begin to use VC in Soloq, that's when Riot will probably add the feature.

I'm not in favour of Client VC NOW. For the reasons that I said. But by the time that everybody is actually using it, then of course I'll want it.

Right now, if my teammates don't join my Discord (which is %90) it's no big deal. But if, next year, EVERYBODY (or even just %20 of the random players) are using Discord, then I'll lose if my teammates don't join, so then, LoL VC would be equalizing things at that point, instead of unequalizing things, as now.

(For example, right now, if you enter as a premade and your team is not using VC (Discord or LoL), then your team is at a (presumed) disadvantage. You can assume that the enemy team contain a. similar premade, and that THEIR premade is probably using VC. If there was VC is SoloQ, then that would be a consideration every match.)

True Garen4 votes

As you yourself, point out, even among 5 strangers, one side having VC was such a big advantage, that it motivated you to make this post. (You probably won.) If the feature was integrated, then it effectively becomes obligatory, alienating a major portion of the users.

Saezio1 votes

So, allowing this advantage via discord is ok. But incorporating it to the game itself so that there is an even playing field is not ok. I don't see how you would alienate anyone. In tons of games that have voice chat, there are people that keep it off.

And it's also BS when it's already allowed between premades in ranked games, but it's impossible for non-premades unless they use a different program.

Because League players would rather avoid mean words than having a feature that can give you a major strategic boost, aka, the voice chat.

As some1 who has almost 1k hours in csgo there are some fight in VC but they're either very mild or if it escalates just mute the person and thats it. And they're not that common, at least when youre in average/high Trust factor. It's way more frustrating when your teammates dont talk in VC.
