combining unique passive effects from different items...what do you get?

For example...if I combine with the passives for each item has the same unique name..but at different damage outputs. Will I get the higher damage? Does it matter which item I purchase 1st to make sure I get the higher damage output? Let me know what all I would gain for combining these 2 items. Thanks!
