MMR being strange. Bug? Intended?

Hello everybody,

My name is Pur1tas and I have been Playing league for some seasons now and been having the same Issue ever since kind of. I did not mention it previously because I thought it will fix itself by just playing more but it seems its just getting worse every season.

So lets get the the real stuff. Last season I have been Gold 4 and I played essentially throughout the preseason. My MMR should not have been decayed that much because I did play right? Okay so lets look into my Ranked games right now. My MMR seems to be really messed up. Actually I don't seem to understand it at all, as I am in teams with people who have been Silver or lower last season and are placed bronce or unranked this season. Fair enough I am only Silver 3 atm. But now comes the part that really confuses me about this whole thing. Why am I getting matched against people that have been Gold or Plat last season (did not even get matched against plats last season) and are at least gold now. I understand ranked games are supposed to be a challange, but its not a challange if all my lanes are getting destroyed because they just play vs people that have been a lot better for a lot of time, meaning something is wrong with the MMR. I understand that in order to rank up I am supposed to play with players worse than me vs players better than me, but shouldn't the gap be a little smaller? I just feels so wierd loosing about 15 games in a row at 20 minutes, just because I play vs people that are that much better than me and with people that just started to get into ranked games.

So I would like to ask if this is the inteded way to work, or if this is because my ELO decayed wierdly or what ever the reason behind this sort of Matchmaking could be. I am not trying to blame my team because obviously they did the best they could and so did I, but there is just no way to get better if there is actually no room to play and learn when all you do is get your nexus destroyed by 20 minutes (no Surrender).

So because I do not want to come here and only complain I would like to make a suggestion for a smart way for Matchmaking, that is not depending on any MMR, but solely on the division you are placed in. I understand that riot wants to have fair games, but wouldn't the most fair games be the ones where people in silver 3 play with and vs people between silver 4 and 2 ? Especially because there are ways to just rank up instantly without any promo if you are high enough MMR and low enough placed, making this whole MMR thing pointless.

So I would appreciate if someone could explain to me how matchmaking works these days and if there is any way fo me to get back to playing vs people of my skill level, besides going down to bronze, in which case I would expect to still play people much better than me or the rest of my team.

Thanks in advance, Pur1tas

Divisions are an illusion. MMR is the only thing that really matters. Also, your MMR cant decay, only rise or fall from how you play. MMR doesn't care what rank you were, only the rank you currently are. If you feel like you're playing against people who are better than you - once you lose enough games you will play against worse players. Although the upside to playing against good players is you have more to learn from them. In my case after getting my a$$ kicked by Rush multiple times as Kindred it taught me how to really push a lead with Kindred as well as carry games.

I do understand the theory behind this but how can it be that the people in my team are always that much worse than the enemy team. I am not trying to blame or anything its simply that they do not play as well. It shows in CS and gameplay. Like for the last 15 games my lanes were behind by 60cs and 6 kills by 20 minutes. I don't think that this kind of stuff helps to get better, especially in low elo as most people there neither know much about the game nor are really interessted in anything more than mechanics. It is a good thing that people in lower elo try to focus on mechanics and I understand it but it seems imbalanced to play vs people that no only have the superior mechanics but also a much better understanding of the game itself. I don't know how else to explain this but no matter how much I loose (and trust me I am loosing a ton) the skill distance between my team and my enemy team is not getting smaller but bigger. And while my teammates are slowly getting worse as I loose games (cs, map awareness, wards, etc.) the enemy teams just seem to get worse a lot slower in terms of these things. I know this seems like a post about a little kid crying about elo hell but I just want to try to understand how it can be that I am on a 15 loss streak. Like from pure statistics at my elo (which is horrible I think I am silver 3 now) it should not be possible to loose that much in a row, especially cause not every game of these I played bad, its just that my solo lanes hae no chance vs people that actually just seem to know a lot more about the game already in terms of zoning, csing and mechanical wise.
