Is there still time to influence the Poppy rework? (A Poppy main weighs in)
I have procrastinated on commenting here about the Poppy rework—at least since the recent announcement. (I have discussed the subject in the more distant past.) I hope I am not too late to have my thoughts heard by those involved in the rework at Riot, or by someone who can communicate my thoughts to them.
I am gravely concerned at hearing that Poppy is going to be a "tank". In the current meta as I understand it, tanks are low-damage but high-CC. Their job is to disrupt the enemy damage dealers and lock them down while your allied damage dealers take care of them. Considering that Poppy currently has only one spell that has CC, and knocks BACK the enemy and only stuns them if the knockback happens to intersect with a wall, turning her into a "tank" would require a very, very drastic alteration of the existing champion—so much so that I fear you would simply be making a new champion and calling it Poppy, and deleting the Poppy we now know.
I don't think a Poppy rework has to be that drastic at all to make a champion that avoids the pitfalls of "toxicity" that I believe Morello has been so concerned about. I concede that her ultimate falls into that category: "take no damage and no CC from anything but the target" does seem to stifle interaction. Perhaps it could be changed to something like "take 20/30/40% less damage" or "take no damage from turrets or minions" (to keep the "turret dive" capability of her current ult while letting enemy champions interact with her).
Her infamous passive has been accused, fairly IMO, of being too opaque—players who don't already know what it is will have a hard time understanding why she just doesn't seem to be dying. This could be easily solved by translating it into more standard game terms: "Poppy gains 1 MR and 1 armor for each missing 1% of health" would be easily seen and understood by anyone clicking on her to see the info sheet, but that would probably be even stronger than her current passive. Fortunately, the proposed system would also be easier to adjust, for instance "...to a max of 75" or "for each 1.25%".
Her W is not problematic; if anything, I think it deserves a buff like increasing the 25% to 35% or removing slows like Evelynn's speed boost, and perhaps giving MR as well as armor and AD.
There is nothing wrong with her Q, considering her current "fighter" persona and considering its similarities to that of other champs such as Nasus or Kha'Zix. It's currently her one main damage dealing ability. (While her E does considerable damage as well, it's secondary to the dash/stun and should almost never be used simply to deal damage. Meanwhile, W and R do no direct damage.)
Anyway, I'd just like to say in conclusion: I understand that we're going to lose the ult, and I understand why. Even if we lose the passive, as long as it's made up for I can probably adjust to it. But don't take Poppy's identity. I've played her as a tank, and the only way she can succeed in that role with no CC is by the enemy team foolishly allowing her to distract them. A CC tank gives the enemy no choice but to react. Making Poppy a tank would either make her a failure or involve changing her too much. Please don't.
