why am I getting matched in ranked with and against diamond and gold players when i'm only silver? How is this fair at all?

Well, that is most likely because of one of two reasons:
There aren't a lot of players in your area, so you have to either be matched with the gold dude online right now, or wait 3 hours to see if the other 12ish silver guys in your area log on. This would cause you to have a lot of bronzies matched with you too.
Your MMR is gold level, in which case GJ, and keep climbing.
Also remember you have the possibility of being matched up with higher ranks, my mmr is around silver 4 with me being unranked, only 7 games into my promos, using support cuz it's a relatively easy role for what I'm best in (mechanics and knowledge) unranked yet I'm still able to be matched with golds and silvers.
It's because as the queue time goes up, the range for matchmaking increases. Just restart your queue every 3 minutes or so until you get a fair game.
Thanks but my que times are so quick, they need to fix this gold I can understand but diamond....
I just looked through all your recent matches and most of them are with Silver or Bronze, maybe one Gold but nothing higher in sight. Besides, you shouldn't be matched with or against anything higher then Gold as Riot put the system in place back in season 5 to stop this.
