Tips for new Orianna player

I'd recommend building Rod of Ages -> Morellonimicon while learning. The early durability and high mana pool make it fairly forgiving of mistakes.
Orianna is a strong farmer. Between minion waves, it isn't a bad idea to do side-camps (i.e. steal the enemy Raptors, your raptors or your wolves).
Hextech GLP is also a good substitute for RoA--helps her lock down people for your jungler a bit better, for ease of ganking, and the chunk of damage its active does is real nice.
Hextech Revolver feels a lot less awkward on Ori than other mages, too.
when i play ori i start q, w, e but i max w first. she has really strong poke in laning phase and her ult is really good for teamfights (you're gonna wanna try to get at least 2 people in your ult if not more). edit: i have also learned that if you have a malph on your team and your ults are both up at the same time, e the malph, let him ult into their team, then you ult. amazing wombo.
you need to max q sure the w poke is strong is but you neeed the cdr from leveling up your q.
being a support main, i don't get to play ori much, so i can see how i may have some errors in my ability levels. lmao.
I take E first for the shield and 10 armor/MR at lvl.1, putting the next two points into Q, then W at lvl.4 and maxing Q first. Makes trading and getting that early CS in a bit safer since Ori's Q poke is outranged by a lot of other meta-midlaners.
Don't play her bot lane
PRACTICE oriana has one of the highest skill floors you wont get good with her in a few games. Also try playing with a duo whos willing to play someone to be a ball delivery system so you don't have to worry about all the mechanics when you start out. Also watch your mana it will drain faster than you think. Another thing is calculate the travel time of the ball what may seem like a great ult one second might be a complete whiff the next.
I've played a bit of Orianna in ranked and normals so here's what I've learned:
Even though she can support, she is much better mid.
Don't expect a lot of kills. Even though you play her mid, she is more of another support for the team.
Max Q first, then if you want to be defensive max E or if you want to be offensive max W.
Use your Q not only for damage, but also to move your ball into a good spot.
Attatching your ball to a front liner using your E is a great way of getting your ball into the midst of a teamfight.
Your ball has a long travel time. Be sure to get used to it.
Don't overextend your ball if you might need a shield.
Getting 45% cdr is essential. Athene's and Morellonomicon is a good way to get to 45% with just two full items.
Q-W-Autoattack to easily proq Thurderlord's in lane for poke.
Learn how her ult works. it essentially displaces nearby enemies to the other side of the ball, so you can use it to draw enemies closer, push them away, or keep them from moving.
Don't forget your W also gives a speed boost to your allies. E-W an ally to help them go faster.
If your ADC is Miss Fortune, ult when she ults for a godly wombo combo.
Ban Zed.
Remember that Yasuo wind wall blocks the movement of your Ball.
This is more of a general mid tip, but usually take ignite into favorable or neutral matchups, take Ignite. For unfavorable mathups, take Barrier. When going into Zed, take Exhaust. When going into Veigar or Ahri, take Cleanse.
And finally, know that Orianna takes time to learn. Don't be discouraged.
Orianna can activate her W on the location of her Q placement before the ball actually gets there, so don't be tricked by the animation. Popping off her W quickly makes getting the big pokes in much easier.
Orianna also relies HEAVILY on AAing in between Ball Bounces to keep her DPS up, but often won't have the opportunity to do so safely. Very important to recognize when the opportunity arises and capitalize on it whenever you can because the difference between getting a nice rotation in and just flinging the ball around is huge. E also deals damage when travelling toward allies so you can use that to keep the One Woman Wombo going further in some instances.
Orianna's poke range isn't that long, she's squishy and the only hard CC she has is on her Ult, making her a risky pick in a lot of matchups. Above all else, it's important to know when she'd be a good pick because if you're laning against someone with strong pokes or safe all-ins, or are teamed with Champs who have a weak followup, then things could go very bad.
