What is the purpose of unlocking a champion?

This might or most likely is a dumb question. I just don’t know why we would unlock champions if we could use them.

Only a set number of champions are allowed for free each week. Let's say there is one you really REALLY enjoy and only want to play that one, once the free week passes, there is no telling how long it will be before you can play it again so you buy it so you can keep playing it.

You also need 20 champions unlocked for ranked.

Ranked is the competitive mod of the game. When you reach lvl 30 and have 20 champions you can play ranked so you can earn your rank.

You unlock Ranked at lv30. It's like a ranked game mode most online games have.

Ranked is the competitve game mode of this game. You need 20 champions because in the statistically impossible chance that 10 of your champions get banned then 9 of them get picked, you need the last one to play.

"Statistically impossible" The only champions I own are Yasuo, Vayne, Irelia, Zed, Blitzcrank, Darius, Khazix, Kaisa, Swain and Warwick. And I always ban Yasuo.

Well then you can't do ranked anyway, you need 20 champions unlocked.

Also you can only play champs you own in ranked

Ranked is a game mode where players compete to see who could feed the most kills. For some strange reason, it's your team that wins this most of the time.

The purpose is

to be able to play them whenever you want
to unlock mastery progression on the champion
to get loot chests by getting an S- rank or higher on a champion that you own.

The game has over 100 champions. You get to play, without unlocking, a random selection of 10 every period. The purpose of unlocking a champion, is so that you can keep playing that champion, regardless of what the random selection is. And also, there is a game mode called "ranked" that is more fun, and is only for unlocked champions.
