Riot's Mastery Rankings make no sense to me...

Proof that it is impossible to get an S w/ Renekton

Morning everyone,

I was desperiately trying to get mastery level seven with Renekton, but after weeks and countless hours of grinding him in all roles in normals, I'm just about ready to give up. In general, I find that Riot's mastery system makes little-to-no sense. But for Renekton its finally broken me. If I had one wish for league of legends' development...Above ALL balance issues, I wish riot were more transparent and cognizant that their mastery system literally makes no sense and becomes a frustrating mess.

I'll keep playing him, but this is a ridiculous challenge that makes me feel like I've wasted my time.

Looking at your match history, 4 things stand out to me:

  1. You had low objective damage. Swain out-damaged objectives. You also had only 2.7k turret damage, which is only half a t1 turret. With being that fed you should easily have been able to deal more damage to turrets.
  2. You lost the match, which decreases your score.
  3. You had zero control wards, and placed only 12 wards in 45 minutes, which is simply unacceptable.
  4. LoG called you a goblin. I doubt that has any bearing on what your score was, but I found it funny.

Ward more, hit turrets more. 12 wards in 45 minutes is simply inexcusable.

  1. This is because I wanted to help my team. I'd often intentionally give the red buff to the adc or blue buff to the caster, and I'd risk my life, k/d/a and nearly die (I think one of the two deaths) protecting my team as they secured baron/dragon.

  2. This is the most probable explanation, but it shouldn't be a deciding factor to awarding mastery. To me that is evidence of a fundamentally broken system in the most egregious sense. Getting this score in a losing game I think would be more admirable/difficult than a winning one where you roflstomped a losing team that just didn't surrender.

  3. When you have a challenger-tier Renekton mainbragging about never buying a single control ward, this shouldn't be a factor in the equation. And I'm not speaking just for Renekton. Because if this is true, it forces top-laners into a support-oriented role; and fixed way of playing, which punishes players who otherwise do their specific jobs well instead of rewarding them for performing their role exceptionally.

This is not likely to make a difference, as you are just a messenger informing me of what happened, but I'd at least like some consensus here. Otherwise thank you for your response/consideration.

Edit: As an aside, the linked graphs you provided are just ridiculous and provide more affirmation to my sentiment.

  1. Fair. It's hard to get objective damage while doing that. However, it's also what the system looks for.

  2. It's not the deciding factor, but it probably was significant enough to drop you a partial grade.

  3. Just because a challenger-tier player says something doesn't always mean it's right. Hashinshin was Master in s7 and s8, after all. And if they have to brag about it that sounds even less right. At that point it's less advice and more "Hah I did this and won despite everyone telling me doing it was dumb".

You don't need to keep dozens of them around, but you were redside, so you should have at least had one for tribrush, if nothing else. Even if you don't use it for shit, it can help your team significantly because you have decent odds at least one of you is paying attention to the map. Most importantly, it'd help your jungler keep an eye on their red jungle. Not super impactful in this game, given that your Twitch was AFK, but still massively helpful.

You were more than ahead enough to afford the 75-150g for one or two control wards. Either way, you had 12 wards in 45 minutes. In my most recent match, I had 10 by 26 minutes. Two control wards, so 8 from trinket alone in around half the time. You simply need to press 4 more often.

  1. Then we're in agreement on this. The system shouldn't value something as such.

  2. Is there any evidence that this wouldn't be the deciding factor, any more than your attention to my wardage? From my personal experience since the system rolled out, winning or losing the game was (and is) always the biggest deciding factor.

  3. Also fair. Plenty of master/challenger players say silly things. But there is a point to be made of giving away free gold to Shacos or Tryndamere's...or whatever lane/jungle competition you're dealing with. I honestly do think that the gold Pink Wards give is too high. Not a valid excuse for me just negligently forgetting to buy it, but it does disincentive one from doing so.

For top lane (and mid and for the RAD), the most important metric is CS. You can get an S with zero kills. You can get an S with low kill participation. You can get an S with zero objective damage. You can get an S with zero vision score. You can get a S with terrible damage. You can't get an S without good CS. Your CS was very bad.

Also, just as a side note, your build is horrendous.

First off, you're a very mean-spirited person. No reason to take shots at my build and call it horrendous. Please go away. Nobody wants to talk/discuss with someone who randomly insults them.

For anyone that sees that comment,

My build was contextually necessary, given it was a 4v5 and I had to perform two roles as a tank and assassin. I'll reference DuskDaUmbreon's graphs for this to defend myself here in how I build. You can clearly see that my numbers were skyrocketed high above average. This can be attributed that the bad play on the other team, but the numbers speak for themselves.

I wish I had a better reward system for earning my mastery points.

But all I get is a Mastery Level 7 emote.

Wowza. Let me shine that thing once in a few moons.
