why isn't rageblade very good?

I almost never see this item used. I watch quite a bit of high level play and I don't think I've seen it used once. I don't see it used in my low elo games either. It seems like a good item from the stats. Why does no one use it?

Rageblade is a very good item on a lot of carries it's just expensive and it's build path is not good for a lot of it's users that can't utilize AP.

I actually prefer Rageblade on Kalista over a second zeal item like Phantom Dancer but I can only build it if I'm far ahead enough because PD is cheaper and has a better build path on a champ that can't use the AP component. A lot of Vayne players will build rageblade to but only if they are ahead because it's a great item for vayne but expensive and it's not core on her.

You'll still see it on carries that can utilize AP like Kog'Maw, and Varus but like I said it's expensive as hell.

either too expensive or the champ that people are playing can't stay in combat long enough for the full effect

It costs an awful lot for stats that aren't 'always on', and double stacking on hit effects means you need a few other sources of those first, which in turn make it so you have fewer slots available to build it even remotely smoothly, and it's just impractical. Fun for the few who can use it effectively, but in practice you're better off spending the same gold on more reliable stats that have a smoother build path.

There was a rageblade meta once upon a time though where if you could even remotely build it, you did (e.g. trist would build it). It was kinda neat.

Takes a long time to stack, has a shitty build path, hugely expensive (3600 gold), requires multiple other in hit items to be worth building, the AP is almost completely wasted on some champs (Yi mainly), and the item is held back by a few particularly strong abusers (mainly Kog'maw and the occasional Kayle).
