We should be able to find our ping before we go into a game in the client

First thing, the links arent mine. Also it sucks when you get into a game and have 500 ping, and we shouldent have to go into a custom to test this, it would just be convienientAmumu

Psh, next you'll suggest we get the ability to change our control scheme outside of a game.

You guys and your crazy ideas.

Then they might actually suggest a matchmaker that actually makes balanced matches. So crazy.

You can check your ping before entering a game, simply open up Command prompt and enter the following

ping 216.52.241.254 -t

OR

For those who are want to check their ping in a less complex way can always download

Is that address the game server or the site server?

That is the game server. Pinging it and taking the average of them will give you your in-game ping.

Could you considering -n [number] to the suggested command? It lets you set how many pings you send. I usually go with 25. It helps to make sure you're actually stable and not dropping packets.

You can ping that address. But it won't tell you anything because the servers are not hosted on that network.

TheLaser21 votes

Seems like you're correct.

I'm wondering could you use a tracert using the list from here: (https://support.riotgames.com/hc/en-us/articles/201752674-Network-System-and-League-of-Legends-Logs#wq1) to determine if you have any connection problems/Ping ?

This is an interesting temporary solution, but while alternative ways exist to check your lol ping, it would nonetheless be appreciated if a feature was implemented directly into the client ^^

Usually, I just play a bot game first to test my ping (as well as get first win)

The problem with ping is that their might other factors in play that can't be tested, when not in game. (like where the other players are playing from) This also does nothing if your ping spikes literally in the middle of the game.

ping only refers to the time it takes for your information to get to the server and the servers response to you

qetzel1 votes

Which changes depending on how much information is being sent. How difficult would it be to simulate a teamfight for this ping checker? I don't know... I guess quite.

UberAffe1 votes

I guess I don't know riots specific set up but generally every packet is the exact same size, some times it just has less useful information inside of it

qetzel1 votes

Really? Why do some people get spikes in ping - during teamfights or when minins spawn, for example?

Learning is OP!

As far as I know riot uses UDP for their packet style which doesn't send out information in specific order like TCP would. tcp: I have 15 packets of information send the first 1 did they get it send the next one or resend the last one. UDP: I have 15 packets to send send 1-15 did you get all that yes good, no oh well next 15

They use UDP because it is better for sending a lot of small chunks of information than TCP even though it is less reliable for each individual packet.

The network that riot is working on getting in place should remove a lot of the loss of packets that they see right now. Won't help ping all that much but it will make higher ping not seem so bad.

TL:DR There is more information being sent out and therefore a higher chance that some of it will get lost.

This has happened to me way too many times recently, and it is honestly so frustrating. I go into a match with 67 ping, but part way through a match, and i start getting ping spikes for no reason, and i am 100% sure that i am the only one on my internet when i play

SolarCarbon4 votes

Or Riot could just make east coast servers and 1/2 of us wouldn't have that problem.

H0riz0n2341 votes

That would be very nice.

The best ping checker I found was the LoL LSI. It's the only reason I use that program, it gives my ping exactly as I'll find when I get in a game. Usually other methods will go till the first "point" after that there are firewalls in the servers so your ping when in game will be higher.

Renstaga1 votes

command prompt. --> ping www.google.com

(sends info to google and back, and then tells you your ping)

Orbv2 votes

This doesn't give you the correct ping. Google's servers are far better than Riot's, so you should actually expect your ping to be higher unless you are located closer to Riot.

Urdnot Entar1 votes

On this edition of great ideas that Riot does nothing about...

kratosendless1 votes

You can check your ping by making a custom game with no one else and then just leave after you're done checking. since you are the only one in there nothing will happen

Slamurai Jack1 votes

I found a utility that shows your ping to their servers and displays it on your taskbar. I have alot of network instability during peak internet usage hours, so it's a great tool for if I want to track my ping without constantly having to go into custom games.

Link for you guys if anyone is interested. http://www.kwoxer.de/programme/lol-ping-checker/

I just run a ping www.google.com -t just to make sure my internet is at least getting out to that. But I run dual monitors so I can have a ping test going all day long and be able to turn my head and see it. I would love to see this added to the client but also knowing the packet drop rate is really important as well. Averaging 84 ms wont do anything for you when you're dropping packets left and right.

I keep this as one of my bookmarks. I hope it helps you as much as it helps me.

I have a lot of lag issues that I've tried to fix, but just can't. Some days are good, some days are bad. If I know I'm going into a match that ill be spiking a lot, I won't bother playing at all. But I don't. I have to go in not knowing whether or not I'm going to disconnect every three minutes or not. It's painful for both me and my teammates.

If there were a way to know what my ping would be for a potential match before I ever join, I could avoid the problem games and not make everyone upset.

killergraham1 votes

I agree here youll lag out and get reported for leaving a game that's not your fault I think it would help a lot just like I think they should try and fixs the clint bc it crash a lot and it can make a fun game blow

xVoltz1 votes

This is a dumb idea, If riot did that then there would be less lagging players in solo que which means for riot, happy people. And we know how they are completely against that.

Implying Riot allows you to change anything outside of game and inside client
