ARAM works as a permanent mode because it's always different and impossible to develop a meta or even to take seriously unless you intentionally gimp your account (and we hate people who do this)

URF gets very boring very quickly as the players who make sure to pick the best available champions become more and more plentiful as the mode becomes available for longer. Treating it as a temporary joke mode enjoyed on rare occasion appears to be the best solution.

How is it impossible to take ARAM seriously without intentionally stacking your champ roster? It's still two teams fighting against each other for a win. That's no different from any other queue/game mode. The specific mechanics are different, but that doesn't change the fundamentally competitive nature of the game.

Because of the total lack of strategic choices offered to the players at the start of the game. In Summoner's Rift there are 5 positions on the map, each with different needs, and champions are chosen one-by-one with every pick changing the landscape of the game in terms of matchups for that lane, possibilities for flex picks, and synergy within that team. To contrast, ARAM gives you a champ and you take them mid.

Again, that doesn't negate the basic "two teams vie for victory" concept. That's like arguing that ranked SR isn't competitive at all because there isn't as much team coordination/communication as pro SR. It's a different skillset, maybe even a simpler skillset, but that doesn't somehow invalidate the spirit of competition.

Two teams vie for victory, but you still shouldn't really care about the result.

Why not? We agree that ARAM fulfills the basic requirements for competition. To then argue that ARAM still shouldn't be considered competitive just seems like personal bias.

I don't care about, say, cooking the world's largest pizza, building the world's tallest building, or getting the highest CS ever at a certain game-time. That doesn't mean I think no one should care. It's just not a competition I'm personally interested in.

Trying to win does not fulfill the basic requirements for competition.

To be competitive, the environment must give both sides a reasonably level playing field and the outcome must be mostly determined by the ability of the players. ARAM was literally designed to reduce the impact of player choice and ability on the outcome of the game.

No, ARAM was designed to reduce player choice and ability on the setup of the game. Riot wouldn't have even bothered implementing MMR for ARAM if player skill was intended to have a negligible impact on game outcome.

Furthermore, "mostly determined by the ability of the players" is incredibly vague. With that argument, no card game can be competitive because the specific cards drawn by each player are out of their control.

If it was just AR I would agree with you, but the AM also means you don't have a lot of options within a game either

Just because it isn't easy to draw the exact line between two extremes doesn't mean it isn't clear that ARAM is on the side of "goofy nonsense meant to relax" while ranked draft is on the side of "competition meant to test skill."

Item build, skill build, choices during teamfights, etc. There's certainly less options than SR, but it's not like there's no options. Occasionally you'll get stomped through no fault of your own, but that's just part of randomness.

Goofier than ranked draft SR? Sure. Too goofy to take seriously? No worse than other random games.

You have to admit the difference in stakes significantly affects perceptions though. If ARAM had ranked rewards, giant tournaments, and advertised pro scenes like SR, it'd certainly feel more legitimate and competitive.

What an awful world you've described

I'll upvote but...IMO if they added URF as a permanent mode they would have to do one thing that I think EVERYONE would agree with.

Randomize it.

URF would be a fun casual mode but seeing the same champs/bans would wear it out very fast, and it would sunset, just like dominion.

So if they were to make it permanent they would have to do some tweaks first.

no and downvote.

Why would they add it permanently when most people only like 2-3 of them and get tired of it? Its not fun to constantly get full build at like 15 minutes and spam the shit out of everything. Not to mention, we have rotating game mode.
