Performance Grading System doesn't take support champions into account; S awards feel arbitrary

I have had games where I went 12/6/24 and not get S rank, I've had games where I went 9/7/19 and get S rank. S rank doesn't appear to have a direct correlation with overall match performance. And I find getting S rank with a support champion is particularly difficult, as you apparently need an ungodly amount of kills or cs in order to get it. (Or the grading system was just in a good mood.) Kills and CS are not generally available to supports.

In the linked match, I went 3/0/8 as Leona support, and placed as many wards as the next top three opponents combined. This got me an A+, which is frustrating because I have seen far worse performances get an S.

Back when performance grades were just a "Good Job"award, this probably wouldn't matter. But now that performance grades are your main means of interacting with the new Hexcrafting mechanic, the fact that S grades are arbitrary and unlikely to be awarded to Supports is unfair and needs fixing.

TL;DR: S ranks are arbitrary and hard to get for supports, needs fixing.

Edit: KyroRane and Mysticman88 have clarified for me what an S rank takes. Apparently the top 5% of Leonas are doing better than 3/0/8 in a 20 min match? Damn.

I normally get S rank on any game that I win as Leona. I don't even have a positive K/D for some of the games, but you have to take into account warding (killed and placed), Kill Participation (champs and objectives [drag and baron too]), and cs.

The reason why Riot doesn't share what you have to do to get an S rank is because EVERYONE decides what to do to get it. You have to be in the top 5% for that champ.

The system does take into account role, and you're graded not based on particular numbers, but rather your percentile performance compared to all other players on that particular champ in that particular role. So it's not any harder for supports compared to other roles, since everyone you're being compared to will also have relatively few kills/cs, it's just since there are some exceptionally good supports out there who have similar kills/assists as you but fewer (or even no) deaths, all while still maintaining strong vision and kill participation and so forth.

The fact you're compared only to those on the same champ in the same role means that someone with a worse performance than you on a different champ/role means occasionally they can end up with a better grade, since they're being compared only to performances on that champ/role which potentially have lower standards.

OK, I better understand what is required for an S. But does this take into account match time? If my match only went twenty minutes, is my cs and number of kills etc. being compared to a 50 min game? Because I can't really see 5% of all Leona's doing better than I in the above linked match. No deaths, most wards by a long shot, second highest kill participation, second highest wards destroyed, more damage than the Lee... Are there lots of Leonas racing around with 6/0/20, like in that AD Leona montage?

But does this take into account match time?

Most likely.

Riot is hiding the specifics from public view, but they also commented that they're quite confidant the system won't be exploited. What that most likely means is that Riot is using a very complex system to determine ranks that simply cannot fit into a sexy and sleek, easily understandable tooltip. Because they aren't releasing the math to the public, they can tie in a lot of really obscure things.

When I play support my ADC usually gets S rank, so it works out regardless of the letter I get.

What's worse is you actually have to have kills in order to get an S.

Yes, even on supports.
