Hey man! Veigar was also my favourite character when i begun, let me help you! I don' t want to dwell too much in texty stuff, just know that Veigar is a burst mage: high damage, target selection, quickness and mostly be wary to never get caught! He has a weak early power, but escalates terribly well in lategame; the first thing to do is farm your lane while being safe, using the Q to last-hit minions and obtain AP. AP is the most useful stat for Veigar, but since he gains some by his own and at the beginning it might be hard for him to cast every Q it might be useful purchase item 1027 that later on becomes item 3070 , so you don' t have anymore mana problems, or start with a double item 1004 that later on becomes item 3028 The difference is the first one allows you to spam more, the second one adds magic resistance and if the enemy is a mage allows you to survive better if you get caught! . When you will be more experienced you can try other things like item 1056 and so on ^_^ When he hits 6 he is ready to massacre his enemies: start to get heavy AP equipment when you can, while fighting try to not expose too much yourself and try to weaken a bit the enemy with your other spells, then finish him with a Q+R combo!

You must pick fragile targets, check if they have magic resistance by pressing tab.

When your fingers will be more nimble you can do more numbers: you can cast E, Event orizon, with the border right under the feets of your enemies so you will force them to get stunned, cast W over them and Q and R soon after: the damage is HUGE and there are very few people that can survive. Remember to not suicide yourself, and to not throw all your skills if the enemy has full HP bar else he might survive, but weaken him qith Q or W. Use the W to clear your lane very fast and don' t let the enemy mage put down your turret first, but always keep your focus on farming the Q at all levels. remember to get item 3135 if 2 or more people in the enemy team have magic resistance and to get item 3089 once you have at least 1 ap item and you have farmed a bit: the results are devastating, and about boots go for item 3020

There it is soo much to tell, but i want to keep it to the basics: after you hang with him a bit you will understand better positioning, prediction, items to pick etc so i don' t want to teach you all in once! Good games!

I put here a set of items you might liek or not, without too much explanation: see if they fits your fancy! item 3020 item 3027 item 3089 item 3135 item 3157 item 3174

Veigar is a crazy ap nuker you should get dfg instead of roa

Dude i think the same way, but look at his level: do you think he is tactically and mentally ready to throw a DFG while in mid combo? Even if I am used to do that, sometimes if i am out of training i happen to spaghetti everywhere on my keys, just think at how muvh he will screw up! At the beginning it' s hard: lots of things to keep in mind, lots of things to do... let him go with his own pace :)

Hmm. DEFINITELY want to go AP, so you are fine there :D Could you give an idea of the items you build, and how you tried to play?

You want ability power and Magic Penetration. Veigar works best when you use his abilities in a burst rotation, so Cooldown Reduction isn't as useful on him. Further, stacking multiple mana based items aren't as useful on him due to his passive, although a single dedicated mana item can be used in his kit.

The general items you'd like to build on him are: (Not in order) Deathcap Void Staff Liandry's Torment Sorcerer's Boots Deathfire Grasp (Especially good against teams that don't have as many AP Champions. Due to the enemy AP scaling on his ultimate, it may be overkill against squishy AP champions) Rod of Ages

These are items that immediately come to mind for me, however there are a few more that Veigar can utilize in his kit.

Hmm, why do you like Liandry's on Veigar? he isn't a DoT mage and he isn't a sustained damage mage, nor does he have a sustained slow. If you are building Tanky with Rylies I can sorta see it, but veigar really wants to be a glass cannon.

Also, Deathfires is always good. Nothing like turning their initiator and tank into a smear on the ground before he gets his CC off.

I'd argue mana is a fine stat on him due to his regen being percentage based. More mana=more regen.

That said you don't need both Mana AND mana regen, so either a grail or a mana item is plenty. I like archangels due to its extremely high AP given, and the pinch shield on seraphs.

It's more to capitalize on the Haunting Guise's flat penetration. As I mentioned, penetration is another priority for burst mages.

True, but I was writing that with the mindset that you will primarily nuke the enemy team's squishy(s) when given the opportunity. Once again due to the enemy AP scaling of his ultimate, it's overkill to drop your burst rotation AND Deathfire Grasp against squishy AP champions. I'll rewrite that to make it more clear.

I said "stacking" mana, I'll rephrase that for clarity.

If you have the time and patience to go through this, DaBox knows what he's doing on our favorite Tiny Master of Evil: http://www.reddit.com/r/leagueoflegends/comments/1xb3rr/hi_im_dabox_i_got_to_top_10_challenger_playing/

WHATUP MAN! Veigar was my first main. I have had hundreds of games with him (admittedly I stopped playing him largely in season 3, but whatever.) Any questions you have I'd gladly answer about Veigar to the best of my mid silver out of date abilities. :D

Normally I'd say deathfire's graspitem 3128 is super core mondo important on veigar, but if you are new you likely forget to use actives (don't we all).

You need SOME sort of mana item. I like Archangels Staff item 3003 but Athenes Unholy Grail is legit.

Deathcapitem 3089 is usually second item on veigar because he gets so much AP from his Q. You are farming with his Baleful Strike right?

Normally I'd suggest building glass Cannon Veigar because thats how I roll. That said, if you are really having trouble, there is no shame in building tanky veigar. For this you want to rush Rod of Ages item 3027 then Rylies Crystal Scepter item 3116 . These give you the mana and health to survive. The kiting from rylies is nice too. Follow this up with a deathcap to amplify the AP from your items and the farm that I just know you were getting all game right bro?! Here and only in this tanky build would I recommend a Liandry's Torment. I'm not even posting the picture, because real megalomaniacs build glass cannon, but the slow from Rylies being spammed from Baleful Strike combos nicely with Liandrys. If you happen to have Rylies, then Liandrys can be nice too.

Eventually, no matter what you are building you probably want to pick up a void staff at some point. I usually do 3rd or 4th item. item 3135

THE BIGGEST MOST IMPORTANT VEIGAR TIP THOUGH!!!** Remember that you are probably gonna lose lane. Veigar is arguably the worst laner in the game. He loses almost all matchups and relies on subsistence farming. He doesn't win lane, he survives it. You just try to make it up mid game where his kit comes together. There are reasons for this built into his design I can go into if you want but mainly just remember you are more likely to lose lane than win it, and that is ok as veigar. Veigar Because if the tables were turned you would show no mercy.

My personal build when it comes to Veigar is

item 3020 , item 3040 or item 3174 , item 3089 , item 3157 , item 3128 or item 3135 , and item 3116 or item 3152 Only reason I grab WotA is the small chance that I have my ult up at low health and can melt the face of the enemy carry or assassin, because you can gain a bunch of health back that way. lol

That being said, Veigar relies on being able to farm with his Q to bolster his AP early. With the number of assassins that are played mid, that's generally an issue once they hit either 2, 3, or 6, because they usually have a gap closer of some sort. Put a point in E at 2 so this way you can at least attempt to escape if you get dived on, provided you position it so that they get stunned. W is useful for wave-clearing when you have AP, but early on, it costs too much mana and does very little. If you are ahead by level 4, I'd say drop a point in it then, but if not, place the point in E to up the stun duration. R combined with Deathfire Grasp's active should destroy anyone who builds AP against you, and if not, following up with a max rank Q should help.

Veigar will lose lane in general because he relies on single target farming, but if you are able to keep your Q's AP buff equal to your minion count, you should end the match with a lot of extra AP over the enemy and hopefully are able to turn the match around because of it. Focus on staying alive rather than diving for a kill. If the enemy recalls, focus on farming the lane before recalling yourself so that you can get those few bonus AP points. Building an early Tear or Chalice will generally help with mana issues thanks to Veigar's passive Mana Font. Grab Rabadon's ASAP just so that you have the bonus 30% AP build on top of your 1-6 bonus AP from your Q's last hitting (you gain 1-5 AP if you get a kill, plus 1 AP if you last hit with Q for the kill). Only grab Void Staff if it is very clear that they are building MR; sometimes Veigar is underestimated and people don't build MR because of not understanding his ult, which can only work in your favor because you can grab Deathfire Grasp for an additional 10% CDR as well as 50 AP. If you already have DFG and they suddenly start building MR, then just grab a Void Staff over Rylai's or WotA so you can keep your damage output up.

Personally, I play him support, starting with item 3302   item 2003item 2003item 2003   item 3340 Then, I get my core supporting items (I try to get Targon first for more Q stacks) : item 3097 item 2049 Finally, I go for whatever the team needs that still offers me damage. In a lot of cases it'll look like : item 3174 item 3089 item 3135 item 3165 item 3116

The first 3 I nearly always get (because they're overall really good), the last 2 are more situational (Rylai if you're getting bursted, Morello for "igniting" people)).

My final build in 160 minutes game (I'm still a support, I never reach 4 items, let alone 6) would look like this :

item 2045 item 3270 item 3089 item 3135 item 3128 item 3040

Veigar was also one of my first favorite, and I think he's a good champion to learn for anyone who's interested in playing mages. He emphasizes learning to last hit well, and feels rewarding with high damage outputs.

A lot of the advice you've already gotten is really good, so I'll just sick with the general - Athene's, Deathcap and Void Staff are a great core for most mages. Veigar isn't an exception to this. If you get them in that order you will scale well on any AP, although many champions have nuances that will cause another item to be optimal.

Also, get used to quick casting because it all allow you to combo of faster. Good luck!
