Is Funneling Coming Back in Season 9?
Coming with the removal of Monster Hunter in Patch 8.18, I've started to see more and more funneling strategies. I just finished playing a 17 minute game where the enemy top laner was a Lulu funneling a Master Yi. They absolutely slaughtered my lane. Yi came top level 3 and simply dove me as an Irelia. AS AN IRELIA. I used my w and stun but lulu tanked the turret and polymorphed my w as Yi murdered me. From that point on my lane was simply over as I had to give up creeps from even under my tower unless my jungle was also topside. It was unfair because the only way to prevent the level 3 dive would've been either having my jungler (a Kayn) stay top with me (which is obviously not beneficial to either of us whereas Yi and Lulu benefit from laning together through funneling) or simply running away from my turret and giving up cs, xp, and turret damage. Yi simply snowballed the game, as my turret was taken quite early and the enemy team sped up the game through rotations. Although Yi was top a lot, he was not always top, and because he was fed, he was able to be a deciding factor in securing objectives like dragon and Rift Herald. Eventually they summoned Rift Herald at the top T2 turret and dove 3 of us, winning the game.
Now I can understand that there may have been a way to counterplay this through more teamwork or whatever strategies there were to combat funneling before, however this is just ridiculous and anti-fun. This was a D4 game and this strategy could absolutely stomp lower and even higher elos. Funneling in Season 8 was one of the most anti-fun periods for solo laners and for teams going against these strategies. I really hope riot does not present this as a viable strategy for Season 9, as I will probably quit the game until I get word that funneling is not viable anymore. If Riot is working on another way to combat funneling, then at least keeping Monster Hunter's lowered gold effect until that system is implemented would be nice.
