~ Memoirs of a recovering toxic player ~

Preface: I'm not a great player, trying to get better and trying NOT to flame as I once have. I have lapsed though. I assume I'm going to get some rude comments, but I really want to see how other people feel... maybe I need to turn off my Enter button in matches.

As a toxic player I see a lot of times where even if I improve my attitude I'm still punished by my own teammates for playing to win. It's like they just don't care to win. People get banned all over the place like me for being rude to other players, but unfortunately those players that will never get any better are allowed to keep playing, and trying, and polluting the game in draft and ranked. All the while I have to keep my mouth shut, can't tell someone even in a nice way what they did wrong or I'll get reported and temporary banned just for the ambiguous "negative attitude" for not babying someone in a ranked match that 'should' know better. I don't mean minor things like missing CS or missing a SS/MIA. I mean things like kill creeps while your team is teamfighting at dragon. Starting dragon when jungler isn't there and then focusing their tank while the dragon is eating your back. Am I the only one that thinks that RITO is so concerned with making everyone politically correct than they are about improving the quality of the players themselves? I don't mind rude players... they coded a mute button. Why do we need to ban for toxicity? Ban for going 3/18/2. Ban for playing like a beginner bot.

My other idea is a mastery level necessary to compete in ranked. Rather than punish anyone, just make them achieve a high level of mastery 16 champs before they can compete. Create rules for achieving mastery based on in-game performance such as requiring junglers to contest dragon to gain master. Laners to take towers. Supports to have near or greater assists than their respective adc's kills. Give people the option of playing a long queue ranked team-builder for 1/1 promos where all members are 1/1 so it's your best versus their best. The current ranked atmosphere in lower ELO is just horrid. In higher rank there are some toxic players but I've yet to have that detract from my play on my second account. (yes my first account is the worse rank haha)

Please tell me your ideas, sorry for the long winded-ness

they're the same rank as you for a reason m8 and that reason isnt your team holding you down

You saying that everyone that you play ranked with is the same skill level you are? You've never encountered a troll or legitimately bad player?

Rufus Crabmiser1 votes

A troll means that they're more skilled than you on a regular basis. Legitimately bad players are bronze, just like you.

Don't be bitter just for your namesake man. Not constructive at all.

Rufus Crabmiser1 votes

Don't be a noob for your namesake.

Okay first off, I agree that riot needs to address a better issue of having trolls. Yet, sometimes people just have a bad game and will go 0/7. If they do it alot, that just means they are bad, and should stick to normals.

Yet, you said "whenever I corrected them" I would get reported. Now its not about babying them, just giving friendly advice and not having the advice come off as rude. Just be friendly and if they ignore the advice or yell at you just say "welp I tried to help", Sadly there is no way to get rid of trolls.

As for the champion mastery how bout like four? or five? sixteen is a huuuuuge number and I have you tried getting to the high level with just one? I have two and it still took awhile.

n00bcherry1 votes

yeah 16 was just an arbitrary number based on draft ranked requirements. You have a good point about the mastery level. What do think about the 1/1 promo series teambuilder style matchups? I understand the wait would be long but I feel like it would be awesome to know that everyone on your team is working to win that game and you all advance together.

n00bcherry1 votes

Thanks for the response. I really just need to work on how upset I get at people in game.

Radnar the bold1 votes

To me I an interested to see how Riot is going to use the teambuilder in ranked (they announced it should come in live in the future). Maybe this will help a lot, since you can stop people from picking troll picks, and possibly have a better team all around. I think A 1v1, wont help because alot of the bad teammates I see are people that dont ward, have no map awarness, dont respond to pings, don't help out, and dont listen.

A 1v1 will only show their skill with a certain champ.

n00bcherry1 votes

oh sorry not a 1v1. I mean a teambuilder in promo specifically for people who are 1 win and 1 loss in promos. In theory everyone should be working their hardest that game to win. Just tired of being the only one in promos and some guys says F it I'll just afk because it's a 12 LP loss not a missed promotion.

Radnar the bold1 votes

The system would be alot better if they just people in promos together. That way you know you have people that want a win, rather than people just playing a normal ranked game.

kcStranger1 votes

I actually like that idea. I don't know how practical it is (queue times could be very long), but I like it.

Radnar the bold1 votes

I would rather have que times that are longer in order to get a better chance to be with people trying to gte the same thing trying for.

n00bcherry1 votes

Likewise, I mean when I do teambuilder I'll often queue up and start dinner with the volume up. Everything works out, and I never feel like I've wasted time.

If you want, I'd like to go back and forth with you a bit on this, because I'm sort of having the opposite problem, namely that I get raged at a fair amount in ranked. I started playing the game in October, and since I don't usually have the chance to play more than 1-2 games/day, I'm still a bit of a n00b. I placed into Silver V, so clearly I'm doing something right. I've been called "god Nami" and "god Corki" before but also had games where I look like total trash. Moreover, my limited experience means that I still make some poor strategic decisions and don't have the level of mechanical control of some more experienced players.

I'm not a toxic player; I think I'm pretty positive, actually. Being on the receiving end of it, though, I've found that there are some types of criticism that are helpful and some that aren't. A comment like "next time, focus Jinx not Janna" is a lot easier to take constructively than "omfg you idiot focus Jinx not Janna." There are two main things that I think are important when you're giving criticism to your teammates: 1. Make it forward-looking. Offer criticism so they can improve later in the game, or in future games, not to emphasize how stupid they are. 2. Combine it with encourage: "OK guys let's do this" (I find it's perfectly OK to be a little cheesy when doing this).

It's easy to forget how hard the skill curve on League of Legends is. I can still remember when I found Intermediate bots challenging (I crush them now, for what it's worth). And sometimes people are very good at some aspects of the game but have glaring holes in others. Maybe they're good at laning but bad at late-game decision-making. Or good at skirmishing but bad at teamfighting. Just because someone is at a certain level doesn't mean their whole game is at that level. The main thing to keep in mind is that if you cut them down in game, they're likely not to improve or even to get worse, whereas if you encourage them and offer constructive criticism, they may just buck up and do something good. (I've seen it happen multiple times.)

The question I wanted to ask you is this: When someone does rage at me, is there anything I can do about it? My natural tendency is to be self-effacing and say things like "sorry n00b mistake, I'll try to tighten up" but maybe that's not helpful. Recently, I've started just muting people at the first sign that they're raging. But, if you think that there's something else I can do in that situation (rather than just play better, which of course I'm always trying to do), I'd like to hear. Thanks.

n00bcherry1 votes

I've raged like that at people... after they have done the same thing at repeatedly. There's no excuse for me doing it and by the same token I feel like there's no excuse for someone being told don't attack tanks to repeatedly attack tanks instead of carries. I shouldn't be rude to people regardless. I'd imagine that even if you are new, you will do well. I don't think new people or unskilled people should be reported/banned. I think the system as is sucks for those people that get stuck with non-competitive players. The question always comes up. why play if you don't want to win. Why play a team game if you don't want to play as a team.

Two quick thoughts in response:

  1. The more positive you are (in general), the more games you'll win. I played games last night where one player was trying to hard carry the team; one went off and solo farmed and took engages when the rest of the team wasn't ready, while the other put in the effort to try to direct the team (he was critical of our play but avoided calling us names). You can guess which game turned into a comeback win. I should say it seems like you're cognizant of all this, so I'm not criticizing you at all, just making the point clear.

  2. Honestly, I'm fine with people dicking around a bit in Normals since for some people, the enjoyment of the game isn't tied especially strongly to winning. However, I agree that by the time you get to ranked, you should by trying to win and play as a team. I guess the only thing I'd say is that people do have days when they look like total idiots. Heck, I've had people queue up with me again because I had such a good game, only to see me suck it up in the next contest.

I'd still be interested to hear a little more from you about what's going on in your head when you start raging, and if there's anything I can do about it if I'm the one f---ing up (other than "get gud"). From what I can tell, you seem to be a reasonable person in general but to have some tilt issues, and that's exactly the kind of player I need to know how to respond to. (Because even if I improve, I'm still going to f--- up from time to time.)

Great points. As an example, when I jungle (my main role) and I get invaded early. Sucks but I try and get back into it. That's part of the game. However, when I have a laner that then asks for help in lane... while pushing enemy into tower with no wards. Then gets upset because enemy jungler kills him while he's past half-way and then blames me for not helping I get a bit flame-y. A scenario that is entirely my fault is getting a laners attention that i'm invading enemy jungle. I crush enemy jungler just to see mid/top lane show up and eat my face while both/either of my laners are just CSing, no ping no help. I will flame. It's rough when you try to make early plays or plays in general that inevitably take out one opposing player just to watch your 'bot-team' doing nothing and then what do you tell them? Please call SS/MIA or plz follow? Just to have them tell you instead: "don't feed", shouldn't have counterjungled, or better yet the "don't gank my lane I'm just farming with there 40% cs.

Those are things that in normals, sure who cares. No reason to say anything. In ranked... wtf?

So, I looked up your ranked level and while I don't think that changes your argument in any way (I'm Silver V after all, and have a losing record to boot, so I'm not really in any place to talk), I will say that it's important to remember that anyone who isn't Gold or better (some would say even higher) can be expected to have some major deficiencies in their game. I think it's important to remember that game sense and strategic understanding are skills that have to be learned just like mechanics, and the fact is that some people just aren't good at those (and maybe aren't even learning), and that's what's holding them back. You just have to adapt around that and try your best to win the stupid game XD

I appreciate the comment, and totally expected comments based just on my rank. I won't try and link some alt account or talk about my higher ranking one. I feel that speaking from this account about this is the best way to get quality comments. My argument isn't really based so much around advancement but mainly just wondering why RIOT doesn't seem to have any plans of improving the players themselves. The focus is on creating a "pc" gaming environment and punishing abusers rather than trying to separate out people that are heinously bad in ranked. I am better now than when I started, yet on this account I can't climb out of bronze when I started the game I was Silver II... On my other account I can't climb into Plat simply because I don't have the mechanical skill to do it. In bronze it is legitimately due to bad players that either intentionally or otherwise end up trolling our team through AFKing, Feeding and whatnot... No amount of temporary bans/permabans will weed these people out IMO. I think the request to RIOT from many players would be for a historic reset of ranking and introducing a mastery requirement to play in ranked. You'll still get people that by default have a higher mastery in some champs even when they suck. However, they will have to try much harder to get to that point than just logging on and playing some random champ that they managed to scrape IP together for.

Sorry, even I get tired of how longwinded I am.

I understand where you're coming from, and I'd like to re-emphasize that I referenced your rank not to downplay your point, but simply to indicate what you should expect from your teammates (i.e., not much). Frankly, I think you're probably a better player than me (perhaps significantly better) despite my account being higher-ranked than yours.

There is one thing I would like to point out. Not counting you, there are four players on your team and five on the other team. So, if you aren't a troll/AFKer/feeder/etc. and you're not behaving in such a way as to induce a member of your team to become one, the odds are 56% that the troll/AFKer/feeder will be on the enemy team rather than yours. To put it differently, all these "bad behaviors" have a statistically positive impact on your winrate so long as you aren't contributing to them. Now, it may take a lot of games before that 56% actually shows up as extra wins (due to simple variance), but for me at least keeping that in mind helps me not to get too upset when people on my team do that.

And no worries about being longwinded. Heck, I've got a philosophy degree XD

n00bcherry2 votes

That's a great point. I'm going to keep that in mind in the future. You're right, if I play my game then by default of not being a bad player I have eliminated one person at least that could have hindered the win.

kcStranger1 votes

Glad I could help :D I'm sure you'll climb if you just grind it out.
