MORDEKAISER RUINED?!? Not really.
(Title inspired by Funhaus)
TL;DR Mordekaiser's early game has weakened but his late game has become a lot more impactful.
So I wanted to give my two cents about the Mordekaiser rework. Get yourself a cup of tea 'cus that's gonna be a long one.
I've seen a LOT of people saying that the metal man has been "ruined" by it. And you know what? I understand that. I'm not a pro player by a long shot, but I've been playing him since I was a nooblet (which, to some people, might seem like not so long ago), and had some degree of success with him. Now, I've played a few games post patch. I know my metal man enough to feel the difference this update has brought.
So why do people say he's ruined? Well, I can't say I speak for everyone (and by that I haven't read a list of people's complaints about Morde), but I've noticed a couple of things.
Like, his Q, Mace of Spades. You know how it used to just boost the damage of one auto attack? That meant instant shield buildup. Now, the damage is "spread" accross three auto attacks, the last one being particularly impactful. That means it takes a bit more time to build up your shield, so the ennemy champions can more easily tear through it. Specially in the bot lane, where you'll have two champions rather than just one. And since your damage is relatively low in the early game, well, you just can't be quite as balsy as you used to be, now can you? And since you can only activate Creeping Death I'm sorry, Harvester of Sorrow, when an ally is nearby, the game kind of encourages you to go duo lane.
However, the changes to his Q also become one of Morde's biggest assets in the later game. I mean, have you seen the total damage scaling on this thing? 390% AD and 260% AP. That's no joke: I've seen the ability hit for a total of 900 damage mid game, and over 1700 late game. That means in a team fight, if you pull of a W-Q combo on a squishy (like the enemy ADC), they'll promptly be sent into oblivion. Sneak in an R and you get an easy phantom to deal more damage to your enemies. Before, you had to use your ult on targets when they were low, else your ability would be wasted. Now, if you can just stick to your target (Helloooooo
) you have enough damage to completely destroy them before your ult wears off.
And that's not to mention the dragon pet everyone's been hearing about. It lasts about a minute, or until it's large health pool is emptied, and deals - well, dragon damage. It definitely has an impact in team fights, although with proper teamwork the dragon's definitely not unbeatable. The passive's called Dragon Force by the way. Need I explain this reference?
Long story short, yes, the early game is not easy for poor old Morde. You have to play a bit safer if you don't want to give the ennemy team to many kills. But it's definitely worth it. Late game, Mordekaiser becomes a freakin' monster. Remember the latest patch rundown, when Zirene said Morde was scary for him? Yeah, for having also played against a Mordekaiser, I definitely share that sentiment.
Mordekaiser isn't dead, people (Well, maybe he is, lore-wise but that's not the point). He's still very much alive.
Of course, feel free to share your personnal observations.
