I need someone to explain to me how MMR works!

I came back to LOL and decided to play competitively. Started out in B5 and got into S5 in about 5 days with a winrate of around 75%. After this I decided to try some other champions and ended up in S3 after 3 more weeks. I got crushed because of a lose streak and after around 30 matches(I lost about 20 of these) I ended back in S5. This made me angry so I decided to go back to playing with Leona. After 25 games I'm back in S3 with 100LP , I won about 20 of those. Now my winrate in season 8 is 58% with a 3.03 KDA, but since I entered S3 I got only 18 Lp/win and -20 LP/lose. op.gg said my MMR was over S1 at 1444 and lol-mmr said my MMR was in the top 10% of S3 when I got into S3.

So then why was I getting only 18 LP/win? I do not understand. Some people say that MMR moves quicker than LP so then my win streak should have gotten it higher than my lose streak. If it moves at a slower pace then both of these streaks should not have mattered a lot and instead my MMR should have been where it was when I first got into S3.

Which one is it? I really want to know? Thanks in advance and sorry for my B2 English! And yes I do think that I am really good with Leona !

MMR does not change the same amount each game. If you lose a game you are supposed to win (AKA your team has higher MMR) your MMR will drop more than if you lose a game you are predicted to lose and the same goes for wins.

Ok. So that means that the LP I gain is influenced only by my MMR which is influenced by what you said. So If I am in S3 and fight G5 players with a MMR that is lower than mine I will only gain 18LP. But let's say that the MMR op.gg states is correct and my MMR is nearly above S1(1444). It also states that my teams average MMR is 1335 and the enemies is 1320. Doesn't that mean that I'm "carrying" people with MMR that is actually way lower than the enemies?

And is it possible to fight G3 or even G1 players if my MMR in S3 is extremly high?

And if this is not true then doesn't it mean that LOL is making me climb slower and making me only fight opponents that are worse than me?

If I have a G5 MMR in S3 then I will get a lot more LP right?!

To be frank, so high MMR discrepancies should not occur much. But if those were the actual numbers, you are predicted to win that game so if you win your MMR grows a little. Also with those numbers your team still has higher MMR than the enemy so if you lose you are losing a lot of MMR. How many games have you played since you returned? It could just be that your MMR is still moving fast because of the low number of games and so the site can't effectively track it

First, any site that gives MMR information is a very rough estimate, but is not your true MMR. I use op.gg to track trends and I've seen someone's MMR change by more than 100 points without playing a ranked game.

Since LP gains are adjusted based on your MMR compared to your current rank it does mean that +18/-20 says your MMR is SLIGHTLY low but realistically you are almost right on.

My guess would be that when you dropped to silver 5, your MMR fell way below silver 5 and your winning since then has brought it up to a low silver 3. The fact that it has been since you were promoted means that you are now being compared to a higher standard since your promotion. If you keep your recent win rate over 50% the gains will increase again.

MMR is a background number that tracks your match history to a degree. The number rises as you win, and drops as you lose. The matchmaking them tries to pair you with people in a similar MMR bracket. It's the best way to keep people close to each other in skill level for the best possible matches. If you lose a lot though, it typically implies you're above your ranking bracket, which is why your LP gain drops as you lose matches.

Yes I know this but if you win a lot shouldn't that imply that I'm under my ranking bracket. MMR goes up when I win and down when I lose but what I've seen is that if I win and get 20LP and then lose and get -19LP and then I win 5 matches in a row the first will give me 20LP, second will give me 20LP, third will give me 19LP and fourth and fifth will give me 18LP. If I want it to give me 20LP again I will have to lose 1 or 2 matches and then for 2 or 3 wins it will give me 20 LP and then it will decrease again.

I'm speculating a bit but I'm pretty sure it compares your MMR to others I. Yiur rank. That way it can be fluid if MMR within a rank fluctuates a but.

On your streak, let's say you started at zero LP...you win and it compares your MMR to others and gives you 20, next to 40. Now it could be that the average MMR for people at 60 jumps quite a but so your win doesn't quite put you there. The more you pull away from the baseline, the greater the MMR gaps between ranks become.

So the average MMR in S3 0LP might be 1300 and the average MMR in S3 40LP might be 1400. If my MMR increases by 40 and I gain 40 LP then I will be a lot under the agerave for 40LP which means that I will gain way less LP. I will need to increase my MMR to more than 1400 to gain more. And the average MMR for S3 100LP might be 1420 which will mean that now I will gain way more LP. So basically in 1 match I could earn 18 LP and then next I could earn 22LP.

This seems like a shitty system to me. They should set a MMR value for each rank instead of changing it based on the player base. It doesn't matter until you get to leaderboards like in master and challenger anyway so why destroy the experience of players in lower ranks?

They might set it that way. If you notice on op.gg, the percent of players at each ranks doesn't change dramatically....25% bronze, 50% silver ect.... if its dynamic, it can adjust automatically where a set value would have to be manually changed if there is a change in player skill.

Don't forget that even the MMR is relative to other players. 1300 MMR does not represent the same skill as it did a year ago. In fact, an increase in MMR for you over time means that you are improving FASTER than the people around you.

I guess you're right. Thanks for the feedback!
