Meditation doesn't work on champs that use Energy instead of Mana, or is it so minuscule that there would be no point in having it work for them? Though I would still like for it to work, otherwise the points go into Merciless and I don't want to use that when playing Shen top lane.

You could opt for 12/0/18 masteries on Shen instead with Grasp of the Undying as your keystone. You'd have insane sustain with all of that life steal added onto a tank that already has built in life steal.
