Mage items are losing about 100 AP across the board

And not a single one is getting AP added as compensation buffs for late game. I remember when your endgame was 950AP. Now, hitting 750 is difficult. Can't imagine trying to be useful in the low 600s. Considering that Rabs is pretty much required to keep up its an even greater loss.

I also have no option for a good defensive first item since Athenes is for supports and not an item that anyone can build. "Here at Riot we want build diversity, but don't build that item! It's not for you."

I'm not going to be too fond of thunderlords 2.0 being that you are required to rush revolver or lose lane.

Where are my triple 120 items?

And you are looking at less then half the changes with soon to be outdated numbers.

One of the things people tend to overlook is that Riot is adding things like the Luden's Echo damage proc which while it doesn't increase your AP, it does highly augment damage directly. There's also the Masteries like Thunderlords which straight up augment damage. Since all three new Hextech items also have a form of AP scaling damage to them, the loss of AP is justified ASSUMING that the player buys them.

Riot does need to give back some AP, but they can't exactly give as much as there was before considering we have up to three recent procs (Luden's, Masteries, Hextech) that could scale stronger off of that amount. OR they could give the AP but lower those scalings somewhat. That'd be fine too.
