Silver is the hardest rank because teammates are the worst - Change my mind

saint916··5 votes·2,760 views

I've played in all the ranks and Silver is by far the hardest:

  • You are stuck with the new players who just ranked in
  • Tilters are the most prevalent because they either dropped from Gold or they are try-harding from Bronze and are stuck with said new player teammates
  • Most "smurf" accounts are here because it's the starting rank
  • Most volatile games, gold graphs are wild
  • Not good micro or macro play

I've played in all the ranks

has a 54% winrate over almost 40 games in silver press x to doubt

I've watched a handful of unranked to challenger runs and have never seen one get stuck in silver. hell, they rarely lose a single game that early.

This is the smurf account, man. All his diamond games were on his main. Don't you know that player skill scales with account level?

Stuff it. No "smurf" plays GP and gets a negative winrate with 1.89:1 KDA. If he is indeed a smurf, then he is trolling and should be reported.

So wait. You spend $10-15 each on several accounts just to troll on them until you get them banned?

.... This is what you do with your days? I mean, you do know account trading is big time against the TOS, I'm sure, so in addition to wasting your money, you're pretty much begging to have any account hooked to your IP banned by saying this right on the official boards. (If you want to delete that post with that in mind, I'll delete this one too; I'm not keen to see people IP banned because they mentioned the wrong thing on the boards.)

Also you literally just said that you've "played in all ranks", but imply that Silver - the one this account is currently in - is the hardest. That would mean you do play on this account. Regularly enough to maintain a Silver rank. And you're complaining about not being able to climb higher because of the smurfs and unskilled teammates.

Also if you're going to make a separate account to post with, why not just make one for free? You don't need to play at all to post on the boards.

I've seen slices of Swiss cheese with less holes than this pair of posts, friend!

They are already challenger themselves ofc they wouldn't be stuck in silver. Unless you want silver to be harder to climb then challengers than ofc challengers won't have any issues with it.

Secondly, why do you think they start a fresh account in the first place? I'll tell you why, because they want the account "clean". An account with history in it will be vortexed into the matchmaking's obsession with averages. If they actually int a few games in silver, and I'm talking about tens or even hundreds of games, or maybe just grab someone's account who has been stuck in bronze for like 3 years with hundreds of matches under it, they'll suddenly find even as high elo climbing silver would be substantially more of a challenge all of a sudden.

That touches on the main flaw of the matchmaking in League. Climbing is ONLY possible, when you're ALREADY good at the game. You need to be at least high silver or even gold to get out of bronze elo, for instance. The system fundamentally does not give you a chance to climb it organically and instead expects you to be better ALREADY before it can award with a rank slightly lower than the one you've fully demonstrated the ability to be in. If you are looking to eventually "git gud", then you're shit out of luck; you have to ALREADY be good.

That's why climbing is so painfully slow and it often takes YEARS just to climb from silver to gold. Because the matchmaking is just constantly battering you with unfair matches the instant you show any hint of improvement while wondering why your skill isn't 2 leagues above your actual rank. People do not learn from that kind of nonsense in the same vein as giving university exam paper to middle school kids will not make them learn. The matchmaking does NOT facilitate people getting good, it only facilitates pushing climbers down as much and unfairly as possible; and the only exception is when you're VASTLY superior than your current rank.

"But how would there be high elo?" I head you ask. Most high elos get their rank by simply being in the game first before anybody, and that's why high elo is a look at the game's oldest standing players; and with their smurfs that took up other spots in the already limited spots in high elo. Sure they may be better at the game, but often the real difference between them and say plat players is ultimately down to them grinding more and playing in the time when matchmaking wasn't so anal about keeping the status quo.

I can assure you, if all League youtubers start their X to challenger stream by buying a hard-stuck bronze account with hundreds or thousands of matches under its belt (ofc, those accounts would probably be banned later, but it's not like they intend to keep them forever beyond making a video anyway), then the stream would take a lot longer than a single video or 2 and it wouldn't be nearly as easy. They don't do that because obviously, the purpose of that X to challenger videos is to serve as clickbaits and ego-strokes, there is no fucking way they're gonna turn around and say, "yeah the game's matchmaking is busted and "git gud" is simply not enough", now can they?

Someone's already taken a bronze 5 account with abysmal mmr (like 20% winrate or something) and climbed with it to disprove that. This was obv prior to iron existing, but still the same concept.

If you're taking years to climb to gold from silver, you're probably not actually actively trying to improve. No one that actually does what's necessary to improve in the game gets hard stuck in that low of an elo. Simply grinding games and making the same mistakes over and over and never actually improving yourself will obviously never result in your going up in rank, unless you get a lucky streak of games. If you want to climb from bronze to silver? actively look at the mistakes you're making and fix them. If you want to "try" to climb from bronze to silver, just continue mindlessly grinding out games.

that's just blatantly wrong. Sure, most popular streamers have been high elo since an early time. But that's why they're popular. I guarantee you a majority of high elo players haven't been playing from the very early stages of the game. Your defeatist attitude of it being impossible to climb unless you're already good is self-fulfilling.

again, that's literally already been done, exactly because of arguments like yours. I can't remember if they ever actually finished the challenger grind or just stopped at like gold or plat or something, but it's already been done. unranked to challenger has been done to death, high elo youtubers need to find something unique to get views.

You are ignoring the fact those players doing the X to challenger runs are challenger players. Ofc they aren't going to be stuck in bronze or silver no matter how bad the account's history is. The point I brought it up was to point out there would be a difference in difficulty between them trying to climb a fresh account or otherwise. But I must admit, the difference probably isn't significant to feel for them.

However, if we change the setting just a little bit and say a X to gold run that's attempted by a gold player while using a 20% win rate hard stuck bronze account, they will very likely, find the said run extremely challenging.

And that's the problem with matchmaking. The condition to climb (especially consistently so; keyword) is if you're VASTLY better than your peers and better if you aren't already stuck in the "average vortex" simply because you didn't start the game already good, and not because you're simply better than your current rank's expected performance.

The system fundamentally punishes incremental climbing, and rewards smurf power climbing. The system is severely flawed.

At the very least, Riot should remove the promos that gatekeeps every single division by intentionally throwing clearly unfair matches at you expecting you to not just play vastly better than your current elo but so much better you can actually carry your intentionally picked bad teammates against the clearly superior enemy team; and not only that, you have to do it every single division (ffs, I climbed my way out of Bronze by sitting every game with full Bronze teammates against enemy team consisting of entirely mid to high Silver, just to get into Silver 4. You gotta be kidding me.). That should be the very first step Riot should take they they want to fix the ranked ladder.

You literally said a challenger player would find it more difficult to do. I'm not ignoring that fact, I'm refuting the point you tried to make.

A X to gold run that's attempted by a gold player while using a 20% win rate hard stuck bronze account will find the said run extremely challenging.

I mean... yes, a less skilled player will have a harder time boosting an account from an elo not far below their own than a challenger player will. Extremely challenging though? Very highly doubt that. I've played with low bronze friends before. Those games are unbelievably easy, with most players making constant huge mistakes. Once they bring that bottom of the barrel account up to maybe low silver, they'll find it takes a bit longer, but if they're actually gold, it shouldn't really take that long to get there. It would be more a problem of just having to put the hours in to repair their mmr than actually having difficulty because of games being hard.

And that's the problem with matchmaking. The condition to climb is if you're VASTLY better and better if you aren't stuck in the "average vortex" simply because you didn't start the game already good, and not because you're better than your current rank.

I definitely didn't start the game good. I've never bothered to grind this account out to higher elos than gold because I frankly only want the victorious skin. But last season I placed in s1 despite playing against low plat players in my placements, and had no problem at all climbing out of it. I'm not vastly better than these players, but I am better, so I climbed. If you watch your own games back and actually pay attention to what mistakes you make and what mistakes other players make, it becomes a whole lot easier to punish mistakes and win more games.

No, that's the actual problem of the matchmaking in League.

You have to grind to set a new average, by being consistently better than your current skill level. Or else climbing is a wet dream.

That's why you have to already be good, and less about getting good.

Ofc, people don't magically be good already, but most people get there through constant grinding of trial and error until the day they suddenly figure it out, and not because they actually got better incrementally game by game. And that's exactly the failure of the matchmaking system in League, that is only concerned with pushing people down as mercilessly as possible instead of actually giving them a fair chance and have them prove their worth.

if a gold player actually has issues fixing a hard stuck bronze account and have to grind it out by constantly beat it with the magical skill upgrade of swapping players/boosting to try and change to a new average for the mmr to not be nearly as draconian as before to hope for an actual climb, what chance does the bronze player actually have by getting better through incremental play?

The chance is not very big, and the odds are SEVERELY against them by design since unless you get lucky and get carried into a higher elo, you essentially have to rely on someone on the enemy team throwing or you somehow figure it out like Mendeleev to climb given the matchmaking's obsession of keeping the status quo and it constantly throwing VASTLY unfair matches to keep you in place. No matter how you look at it, the matchmaking has A LOT to improve upon.

I don't see how that's a problem. You shouldn't suddenly have great mmr for winning a few games in a row. That would actually be much, much worse. The mmr system isn't the problem, it's an extremely basic elo system that you can find in most competitive games. I think riot's ranked system is pretty garbage personally and it should only be mmr like what we had back in s1/s2, but mmr definitely isn't the problem. I'm all for removing promos entirely, they accomplish nothing but gatekeeping for the sake of wanting the player to play more games.

You don't just gid gud overnight. It should be challenging for that terrible player with a far below average winrate to climb, because they're that far below everyone else in their abilities. Climbing the ladder shouldn't be easy for them. They should have to spend a decent amount of time actively improving to climb.

I'd add that climbing the ladder shouldn't even be possible for some. Everyone has their niche skill level, and for some pepople, it actually is high Bronze. It's nothing to be ashamed of. I sit in the high Bronze/low Silver area and I don't mind one bit.

You don't git gud overnight. That's right. But that's what the system expects if you don't want to climb over the course of literally years to wait until the day you just suddenly "get it" to come. And that's the core of the system's problem.

After all, you need to constantly demonstrate at least high silver or even the skill level of gold just to get out of bronze, since you're not just tasked with beating the silver players but also to carry your bronze team against the silver players as well as per how the promo is structured. And if you have a history of being bad then you're shit out of luck, because you probably need the skill of high gold to plat as well as an excess of personal time to get out of bronze now; given you ain't going nowhere until the mmr is "fixed" (and Riot doesn't do hard resets).

That's why the matchmaking system is doing such a bad job actually giving people a fair chance and providing an actual competitive environment that actually worthes a damn. Not sure if what I'm trying to say comes across properly.

At least we both agree on the toxic nonsense known as promo tho, and again, I guess most of my complaints is centered on shitting on promo so yeah.

In our elo every game is winnable. Stall them out, they'll eventually throw because nobody has any clue on how to end the game.

Also: Stop playing when you're tilted. A friend of mine always tells me that he's not tilted after losing 5 games in a row: Yes you are. If your midlaner gives away first blood and your first thought about that is "not again" you ARE tilted.

And try to play something other than support. Yes, I've climbed to gold playing support in Season 5. It's disgusting. Climbing with a role that has next to no impact in low elo unless you snowball your ADC to a state where he can just brain-afk oneshot the enemy is way too tedious. It's still possible, but get yourself a capable ADC Duo if you want to climb at an acceptable rate.

I feel like they're all stuck in high gold/low plat ELO with the rest of us. When I was in silver I rarely came across smurfs. Maybe I just never noticed them though.

I don't know. This is my first time trying for plat. I usually just get to gold for rewards, but I like the new plat border better than the gold one.

It's pretty hard though because I've seen so many diamond divas throw because they experienced a minor inconvenience like the rest of us mere mortals.

You can't really do anything about it either because it's just their side account, and Riot doesn't even punish trolls anyways. They're just going to get another account and troll. I don't think it holds anyone back, but man does it tilt you for a bit.

fountainAFK1 votes

Currently "plat" hovering at around 59-60% winrate..

As a support main I agree that silver is the hardest rank. In Silver you have to "carry harder" and can't relay on your team like you can in higher elo. Get your adc to 10/0 in silver and they find a way to throw it by running around solo in the other teams jungle, and they do it over and over soon they are 10/10. There is rarely any teamplay and everyone is just doing random stuff to throw any lead you give them.

It's also harder to support silvers as they tend to have no understanding of laning. So you end up overpushed and in positions you know are bad again and again, but there is little you can do other than to roll with it. Silvers also struggle hard vs assassins like katarina, regnar or even master yi and tends to die a lot to them. You basically have to be the one to shut down such players on your own in silver.

Also the stuff about silver being smurf land is true as well, in silver there are just so many "high elo" smurfs temporary ranking up new accounts. These smurfs often get massively snowballed in silver. What often happens in silver games is it becomes a "battle of the smurfs", like "we have two diamond smurf" their team has "2 plat and a masters". Then the smurfs decide the game and the true silvers just get carried or stomped depending on who has better smurfs.

Kovorix1 votes

Gold them same Plat the same, Dia the same and probably everything above the same. Your teammates may get better but so are the enemys.
