Why cant two people choose the same two positions when going through que's

So if two people are queued together why could they not choose the same two lanes, like Top and mid? Why would you have to select something different? I don't know this is just a personal feeling maybe there is something better to explain?

As a solo you have to pick two roles.

As a duo if you could each pick the same roles, you'd effectively each guarantee yourself a role.

That's sort of unfair to solos isn't it? You're guaranteed top and mid, while the guys queued mid/adc or top/jg may get an off role. You get mid for sure and your duo gets top for sure.

So basically, #of roles to queue for = # of players queuing + 1.

2 players = 3 roles to queue for. 3 players = 4 roles to queue for. --> however it gets tricky here, as you can queue top/mid, mid/top, and adc/jg let's say. So two people can guarantee their roles if the third is completely different. 4 players = must have fill or all 5 roles. I think. It may just require someone queues support (I've heard this - never queued as 4). 5 players = do w/e you want

Well, honestly, I don't agree. If you're duoing and are really in sync as a adc/support duo, why should you have to risk not being able to team up? If you're in 5, you guarantee yourself a role. If you're in a 3 man, you can effectively guarantee yourself a role. If you're solo and pick Support primary, you pretty much guarantee your role. I don't see it as 'unfair' as a benefit of being duo. I personally don't see a problem with a team game emphasizing synergy with duos especially when one lane is a duo where shoutcasters tout their synergy. I don't know. In the end, I couldn't get my GF to play League of Legends because she couldn't be with me in bot all the time. I would try to support and she'd be ADC, but all too often she was on her own with some person who was extremely toxic because she isn't the best player ever.
