My stats and such are posted above. Obviously my win rate is far below average. I started off with an awful win rate as I jumped back into playing League at all by playing ranked, and obviously was very rusty and shitting it up. As you can see I have been winning much more often than losing lately and my stats are pretty dominant, albeit against the lowest of competition. Yesterday, I was winning quite a huge majority of games, obtaining my promotion to bronze 4 and winning two in a row after that, however it was at this point I noticed that I was gaining only 13-14 LP per win then losing 27(!!!) after a loss. I lost 2 games in a row today, the first one taking me to 0 LP after losing 27 in that game, then after losing my first game on 0 LP I get demoted to bronze 5. Looking at my stats I can't help but feel that it is fair to say that I am a good deal better than the players that I am playing against. I was hoping and wondering if some people that are better at the game than myself can find the flaw in my stats, or help me to understand what needs to be done for me to start climbing without being dragged down super quickly. Any advice or comments are appreciated, thank you <3 - Khaos

  • Premades are "Hard Coded" to win more than soloing
  • Stay away from AP mids atm, because yes they may get kills, but AD's get towers (also many popular items now counter AP at near broken levels item 3053 item 3156 item 3139 item 3060 )
  • Supports that heal win (basically try and run Soraka Sona TaricAlistar Nami or Bard as much as possible as long as the enemy support doesnt hard counter you)
  • AD mids are the way to go (try learning Zed Talon Riven, yes riven, and Yasuo )
  • Tanks are a good place to go top, support, and jg.
  • The more sustain the better in terms of tanks (think champions like Garen Chogath Darius Swain Zac Trundle Illaoi )
  • True damage is the best form of damage (MasterYi Fiora Vayne Garen Darius )
  • It will ultimately be up to your ADC, jg and MAYBE top to carry a game. AP carrys dont fit the bill anymore.
  • item 3512 item 3060 enough said right here regarding pushing lanes, especially vs AP
  • Running full 5 man AD comps are ok as long as there is a tank and some form of hard cc
  • Play who you are comfortable with, but dont be afraid to try out a secondary if your first choice gets counter picked
  • if you can't win it early, it will be decided on an ace
  • Baron throws more games than it wins
  • Dragon 2 and 4 are very useful for APs when they have to take towers
  • DO NOT TILT OR GET TOXIC (obviously)
  • If you lose 2 games in a row, swap out to normals and get your confidence back up
  • re-promoting is easier so dont worry as much

What this guy said....

Coming from a AP Mage Mid Main (Malzahar, Syndra, Ziggs, Anivia, Zyra, Ori...) I will have to say in order to really climb with the AP Mids you have to know them...

Unless you are Annie Lux these two are really not hurt too badly by those items. Because QSS isnt fast enough to completely save them from the combo, also maw will save their life, but they will not be able to re-engage making it a 4 v 5 in that next team fight, and if your team is near then even if they have those items it doesnt matter because they are dead anyways. Hence why Annie and Lux are going to see massive nerfes before the end of this season, then when they decide to fix towers and fix the itemization of the game they will get buffed again.

so, seeing as you are a mid main, what is your take on roaming? what level and how often do you roam? Thank you for replying =D -Khaos

I have picked up the habit of roaming into the enemy jungle to ward the enemy junglers buffs at like 3-4 minutes in game; because it gives the whole team an idea of where the enemy jungler is currently.

For example: Say they start blue team red side, (90% of people do). Then At about 3-4 minutes I ward the blue. If he hasn't crossed over that ward, then I know that he is either going to be going to gank bot or mid before he takes the blue/ He backed and will be sighted at the end of the ward life.

But I like to try to get a roam in at around level 6, but that is because I play immobile mages. When I am playing LB or a mobile caster, then i try to get my lane shoved as fast as I can around level 4, roam bot or top. Whichever one has been more aggressive and shoved harder, to try to get a kill or a recall. Because if you get a recall out of them then it is worth for your team mate at top. As long as they know how to use that farm advantage.

The occurrence for me when roaming, is primarily depending on my enemy laner. If I force him out of lane and I have nothing to do, im a few hundred or thousand off of my next item, then its pointless to recall. I can use that time to go throught the enemy jungle or gank bot lane. If you want to really learn how to successfully pull off a roam, practice seeing what an aggressive play at bot/top lane looks like, because when you recognize them you can respond to the enemy jungler WHO WILL gank, and be there to stop that gank, leaving your jungler free to do something else, and if you are both good at your lanes then you can come out with a double kill and no deaths.

TL:DR

Roaming is good, as long as you do not set yourself back, and get something...Anything valuable out of it. Level depending on type of champion, Casters- generally level 6. Assassins- generally level 4-6. Occurrence completely dictated by my enemy laner (Unless I have teleport). If he leaves lane then I can leave lane.

Much of this is good for the current state of the meta. That said, in low elos meta doesn't really mean too much. Any champ or reasonable build on them is way more than enough to win a match if played properly. Meta builds and picks start to become more significant as people exploit why they are strong or weak in later Silver and up (and plays an even larger role in high elos).

Edit: Except for the "hard coded" to win thing. Technically, premades are meant to play against slightly higher MMR'd opponents than non-premades. It just feels that way since the added teamwork is much stronger than soloing or a slight MMR gap.

Khaos012071 votes

I think that playing to the meta is probably still the most effective way of doing things at low level play, IF you are comfortable performing in that. I think at my level of play just being generally knowledgeable about what you are playing is a HUGE advantage, IE why my Kat winrate is so high even though she isn't really in the meta at the time being.

I often duo queue, would you consider this an advantage or a disadvantage?

Thank you for your reply! c: -Khaos

Playing to the meta is an advantage, but as you noted, just knowing who to play a particular champion and what to build in a situation goes far further than trying to keep up with something that slightly shifts from patch to patch. I'd rather a an Urgot w/ 100 ranked matches as Urgot on my team over a 20 match experience Azir that was in the meta (hah!). The consistency of having somebody experienced with a champ is, IMHO, much better than somebody who has a slight edge but doesn't have a mastery of the champion.

It depends, but generally I would call it an advantage. First, if they are a higher elo than you, then playing against (sightly) better opponents will help you learn much better than playing against your own elo. Secondly, while the MMR of the other team will be slightly higher as a result, the added teamwork far outweighs that slight MMR gap.

Wow man. Thank you SO MUCH for this super in depth response :3

So, I have actually played quite a decent bit of Riven, and average pretty okay stats with her but I was playing her top. Is she a very advisable pick in mid or should I lean towards one of those other three?

zz'rott is something that I have been looking at big time since one game that we had 2 players buy one and ended the game in 19 minutes. Problem is I am putting myself in positions that I am looking to do a lot of damage most of the time, so they don't usually fit in my build. I will re evaluate that again though following this post.

Master Yi is my fucking ban every single game. Period. I got so sick of having a 0-9 master yi with 25 farm end up carrying. lol.

Thank you again so much for taking the time to post this! :> -khaos

You are getting solid K/D/A ratios, but kills don't win games, objectives do. Most bronze games are spent running around the jungle for minutes on end with no real reason behind it. If you are winning lane you need to roam and help others win lane and make sure to take towers and other objectives (dragon, baron). Don't chase champs and get caught out and WARD WARD WARD!!!.

I started a new account and went from bronze 5 to silver 3 in a little over a week, so it is possible if you play smart and strategically. Another important part is to completely avoid toxicity. If someone yells at you or is salty, mute them, never feed them. Time spent typing is time away from objectives. Also teams need a leader; don't be afraid to ping or attempt to herd people together to take objectives, don't just assume they know what they are doing, a lot of players are looking for someone to tell them where to go.

Khaos012071 votes

Any advice on how to get teammates to focus on objectives? As an AP champion I usually end up carrying the hell out of teamfights, but it seems very hard to convince most people that getting this tower and possibly the next is better than fiddlefarting around.

Or should I cut that reliance and try to main queue top, where I have been playing Quinn lately?

Thank you for your honest response! ^v^ -Khaos

Just ping and type if needed to try and get them to go to dragon or baron, or make sure you let team-mates know where you are goina, and always alert MIA's. It might piss some players off but when I see the enemy jung I ping it; chances are they were not looking at their map and they missed the position. Make your message short and sweet, and don't grief people for making bad decisions. If an opponent walks into a hopeless fight and dies, you can say something like "you almost had them :(" or "damn nice try". Although it was a bad decision, give them a bit of encouragement, changes are they already know they fucked up. No one wants to follow someone that insults them.

Your winrate on Kat is nice. Just exclusively play it and you should be able to climb.

I second Strabane.

Also, the LP thing is normal. You were losing (actually many) matches at 0 LP. Your MMR still dropped, but you weren't being demoted as quickly as it was reflecting and/or it was at bronze 5 and there was no way to go any lower. As such, your MMR is still bronze 5 even if your rank shows otherwise. You just need to maintain a good win ratio (> 50% over a large number of matches works as well) and your MMR will catch up and you'll see normal LP gains and losses. Right now the system knows your true MMR is bronze 5 and you are playing against an average of bronze 5 opponents, so winning doesn't actually mean you "should" be bronze 4 or higher yet. Winning more than losing consistently indicates to the system that you are no longer bronze 5 and it will adapt. tldr: keep playing and it will fix itself

As for specific tips on how to improve:

  • Only play ranked when you're in the right mindset for it. Don't be on tilt. Don't play after having a bad day. All the usual things go here. It will reflect on your decision making in game.
  • Play what you know in ranked. You are doing fine as Kat so try for that when you think it works with your team comp or against theirs (mainly when they don't have lots of CC or reliable CC). Kat is a master of roams. Roam whenever you can. Even if you don't get a kill, put pressure on other lanes whenever you can. Also, don't do much except try to farm pre-6 unless you have a brain-dead opportunity. You also shouldn't be the first person running in during a teamfight. You should be picking up squishy champs outside of teamfights, and playing cleanup during them due to your resets.
  • Just as a heads up, know that around Silver 3 or so you'll see a significant increase in difficulty playing champs like Kat. They're still completely viable, but teams will know how to deal with assassins far better than bronze so you have to step up your game to another level to get past the wall that will pop up.
  • Adjust your build to the match. While I do see a little diversity, I see the same builds in the same order many times in your history.
  • Help your team. Don't try to solo carry matches...it's not nearly as easy as it was in previous seasons. If a lane is down and you're up, you have to help them and not doing so is your mistake as much as theirs for letting it get that way. People can still solo carry, but generally they can't do consistently unless they are actually a full tier or 2 above the average MMR (i.e. silvers and golds in a b5 match).
  • Vision and map awareness. Use it - always. No excuses....pink wards are only 75g and trinket wards are free.
  • Most of all: STAY ALIVE. You're useless when you're dead. Going 1 for 1 is almost never worth it (unless they have a decent bounty and you don't have one).
  • Remember: every match (at elos below plat/diamond) is solo won or loss based on your individual performance. People can feed but every one of your matches is winnable (barring dcs/afks and intentional feeders) if you play it properly. It's never your bot lane, top lane, jungler, or mid's fault. Once you can accept that, the game becomes much easier to tolerate since you won't be inclined to blame anybody else and overall keep the game positive more often than not.
  • Remember that there are 9 other players in the game. The only thing consistent in every match is you. Even if you have an afk or troll or whatever on your team, there's a 5/9 chance the opposing team will have one in every match and only 4/9 chance your team will as long as you aren't the one doing it. That slight chance is in your favor and shows over time.

Thank you for the very extensive post!

A few notes I had to reply with: -my build is often in the same order because I move items around to the exact same slots, regardless of the order I purchase them in. That is a mixture of my OCD and being bored walking back to lane xP

-I am very aware of how easy Kat can be to shut down with proper play. I am starting to put effort into learning a few other champs for mid (currently my best is probably ahri).

  • I tend to roam a lot with Kat, which I am wondering if maybe I should cut BACK on a little bit. My CS numbers are usually just a bit below or right around average, even though I often am out csing my opponent in lane fairly heftily before I begin to roam( circa level 6-8)

-Is there no lower limit to MMR? I thought that because I was losing so damn much at the start that I would really not even have anything left to lose. Recently my winrate has been pretty good, averaging 55-60% but I am just barely gaining more LP than I am losing at the middle of B5... Does this mean I am going to have to fully pull back my overall winrate to 50% before I can start gaining ground again?

Thank you again for these points! <3 -Khaos

No problem!

  • I checked the build orders actually and saw the same 3 first items many times, actually. I only checked a couple matches, though. I normally rearrange my items as well, but then again I tend to get a lot of actives and need to know what is where in muscle memory. :P

  • Ahri is good as well. She's safe in most matchups post-6 because of her ult, and can shutdown a fed ADC easily, which is great for turning around a match. She falls off later (like Kat!), but she can still poke, chunk, pick, and finish off carries late game. Good luck! More power to you for picking up another champ to master.

  • That's always a rough call. You will lose CS by roaming, but the pressure and kills/assists from roaming is so valuable for the entire team as well. As a general rule of thumb (don't always do this), you should roam when you push to turret (to minimize lost CS), your laner roams or goes missing (but be sure to have vision so you don't walk right into them + the jg on the way), etc. Also, if you lose lane and can't safely farm under turret anymore, roaming is your first bet to get back in. Kat's a weak laner and that can be abused fairly easily. But her base stats + resets can still let her get a double kill bot if the lane is pushed. All it takes is one kill to get you back into a game.

  • If you destroy your lane opponent (i.e. 3+ kills in lane), then there's almost no point being in lane anymore. Make the other team rage by harassing their jg, top, and bot lanes. Just your presence and being fed will make any other lane on the map have to back off.

  • Correct - there is no lower limit to MMR. Bronze 5 has players with a huge variance in MMR (probably the highest in the game). There's just no name or rank difference. It's all internal. While getting your overall win rate above 50% should do it, any decent elo system also values new data more than old data. If you are winning 55% or more of matches now, it should rise faster than it fell. Also, win streaks increase it quicker as well. Ever see somebody win 20 ranked matches in a row? Their MMR and rank will rise very quickly (i.e. almost a full tier).

  • Also - every season there's a reset (usually a soft reset). I'm not saying to wait until next season but just pointing out there's always a way back up without having to undo all your previous losses.

Good luck!

Do what i did to get out of bronze....play fizz, first blood the enemy laner then go destroy their top laner its actually quite simple.
