I used to have wildly fluctuating ping between 100 and 350 before riot moved their severs out of southern california... now it's 26 [sg-ezreal]

Before the server move NY used to be 80+. I get it's annoying but when I started playing my normal ping was 120, so I never understood why people say something like 80 is lagging. I play on about 30 to 40 now but even when it does rise to 80 or 120 I still don't get bothered that much.

I went from 10 to 60 and it made the game noticeably less fun. It changes last hitting a lot, for the worse . It makes making twitch plays more of a crap shoot.

Maybe I just never played that low but I didn't notice a huge massive shift between something like 30 and 90.

NA and EU are physically big places with many people far away from the NA/EU servers respectively. I think those with good set ups in chicago (where the NA servers are) do have those tiny pings that dreams are made of.

Korea by contrast has everyone relatively close to the server, plus their whole infrastructure is pretty tight as I understand it.

I'm in the Chicago area, and my ping has gone as low as 7 (only one time) but usually hovers around 9 and is pretty stable on ethernet.

well I'm sure helps that the riot server are also in the same damn city as you XD.

also to adress the OP. the answer is "physics"...

the speed of light is a constant... the riot servers are in Chicago, therefore the closer you are to Chicago the better ping you will have. korea is a SMALL country in comparison to the vast size of the united states, therefore the data donest have very far to travel. and the same time korea also has fiber pretty much everywhere.

so a smaller place with better internet, while the US is a larger place with worse internet.

therefore they have better ping.

now if u want to figure out how to open up a subspace band for faster than light communication by all means by my guest. but until then. we are constrained to the speed of light.

Yeah I just wonder if people get sub 10 ping in Busan (which is about 200 miles from Seoul where KR server is)... since I used to get around 19-23ms where I used to live which was around 300 miles away from Chicago. Seems like Korea's infrastructure is just a lot better in that sense.

well yeah, pretty sure people in korea play at internet cafe's and not at thier house, meaning the fire lines are also much more direct. and yeah they have one of the best if not the best internet system in the world.. on top of being very small. (which makes it easier to make a system so good because doing that across the entire US would be kinda expensive)

so yeah im sure they get much better ping further out than we do. i mean i lived in michigan from nov 2016 to apirl 2017 and i had 30 ms ping and that was when i had the easiest time in my entire life climbing ping DOES matter

I don't think Korean servers are throttled in terms of speed. In addition to that, their country is smaller in terms if size, so their connection to the server isn't as far (literally).

That's because Korea is a physically small. Meanwhile the distance from the sides of Europe and US is much greater.

That's why the Korean with the highest ping is still going to have it significantly easier than the case with Europe and US, because they're still going to be physically closer to their assigned server no matter what and thus less ping as a whole.

Most people live in the outskirts of Seoul where the lol Korea servers are likely located, and use fiber lines is why

I live in Ohio and my ping is usually 23, but now my internet provider is having issues with riot's servers and not allowing me to patch so.. at least ya'll get to play.[zombie-nunu-bummed]

yeah completely forgot about the range factor south korea is insanely small compared to eu and na the servers in eu are like 5k km's away from my spot and im usually around 35-40 ping still good but not as good as less than 10 respond time difference is huge.

because korea 1.is a tiny country and 2. has high bandwidth/high speed (actually high speed) internet throughout

Technically it has mostly to do with the number of routers you have to connect through to reach the server so in theory more efficient routes could be created on the internet that give people lower ping even at a greater distance.
