Sometimes, the trick is to outdamage them (of course, match-up dependant too). If they're not scared of trading with you because they break your defenses, and you don't hurt them enough... you have to find a way to make them pay for trying to trade. Buy some ad or ap, all tanks have at least 1 damage item they can rush now, I'll give you a run down of the few I play:
- pick 1
(Q max)
(E max) - pick 1
:
then build whatever tank you want as long as you max CDR.
Most others, they can all use
.
Another trick I use (on tanks only) is run full HP regen runes and armor reds, while taking all the regen related masteries in resolve. This only works against the enemies who lack sustain. You start with 3 beads and pot, then just farm. The general idea is to trade and regen, this is very strong during the early parts of the game when your hp/5 is a significant % of your total HP.
You will lack damage, but minion aggro is your friend during that stage. You let the enemy start the fight, use some damage mitigation if your kit has it, then tag him with 1 skill perhaps, and retreat while he takes 1/3 of his HP from minion aggro. Penetration doesn't matter since you only have regen, and those regen items can be further upgraded into resist items depending on your laner
, two of which upgrade into decent items for top lane
.
For lategame, the damage comes into play too. A 6 tank item tank is not gonna last that much longer compared to a 5 item one, you might as well get 1 damage item to give yourself some threat, and you can actually kill glass cannons if left unchecked. Even if you did die, you'd have CC'd, soaked damage and CC, and perhaps even got their squishies HP into kill range for your team to kill, as is the job of a tank.
