Tryndamere Rework
THIS ARTICLE IS ON WHY TRYNDAMERE SHOULD HAVE A REWORK AND NOT A CONCEPT FOR A REWORK!
I'm going to make this as quick as possible since most of you are too lazy XD. As a tryn main, I've found success and failures with this champion. I know my rank doesn't really make me a viable source, but after playing this champ as a main and reading through TONS, and I mean TONS, of tryn articles, I've found that at the start, when you pick him up, you perform as an average joe in games, sometimes even feed badly as his playstyle and mechanics are quite different from other champions, especially the micros you have to consider in his plays (ie. Q heal timing, when to use E or not, Ult timing, Ignite countering, positioning, anit-kiting/kiting etc.).
When you start to get a hang of him and become a 'amateur' tryn player you would start to try diff builds( ap tryn, solo baron tryn, troll tank tryn etc), aim late game or basically do what people who barely or don't play him often 'advise' you to do. You will go around thinking he's op then BOOM, you go up against a hard matchup (quinn, teemo, kalista, darius, rammus etc. sit back and think and you'll see why) and you get thrashed so hard, you start tiltng.
Then, you get the level 5 mastery and have by then, heard every tips and tricks there is to tryn and his playstyle. You would have settled down on your build (by this i mean your core items) that is up to the meta and has the most synergy with him (
/
, screw the old
into
, and
), you start win more of your lanes, have a better sense of what to do in all stages of the game and your LIMITS. Sure you would lose the occasional game, but if you played tryn the right way, you would have a decent kda or win every game. This is because I'm assuming you just hit lvl 30 and/or are at bronze, even silver rank where people don't see tryn often, not the 'up to date' one at least, and play against you as they would against a season 4/5 tryn.
People start calling you no brained, super OP when they don't know the amount of timing, micro management, decision making, build refinement and ability sequence perfection that goes into the final product that is YOUR tryn. Everything seems dandy right now and you start to think of climbing rank with him.
However, as you are exposed to more experienced players, champs and guides, your games start to turn stale. You lose lane, get camped (you need to snowball or stay even as tryn), previous strategies don't work, and last but not least, you get KITED. A fuck ton. Experienced players play you around like how they would to that one poor kid in the football team who had no skill and was always the monkey in the middle. Yes, you can prevent kite by itemising, positioning, ability usage, etc. but as tryn, you are a berserker by nature and you trade that off for 'brains' in game in the sense that you can be juked easily (think zed, leblanc and shaco mains. Bad memories, I know.). The things is, theres only so much you can do to counter something thats meant to be. Champs w hard lock downs (Nautilus, Poopy, etc.), mobility (the aforementioned 'juke' trio) and 1v1 trade manipulation (Darius' passive, Fiora's w and passive, Trundle etc.) shut him down hard if both players are of equal skill.
Tryn's position on the ever changing balance line of the champions is in such a ridiculously binary and fluctuating state that he can go just as planned and do well or COMPLETELY fuck up ONE move, just ONE, and become just a player/champ to fill up the team space and comp (essentially dead weight). Due his concept being straightforward, which should not change as its one of his main appeals to players, even if he switches roles, what I stated above still applies. He in theory should be able to hold his own and win games if he plays his cards right (reason why people call him op). In reality, however, there is a sheer amount of counters to make him unviable, stemming from your own team to unfavourable matchups and counter-itemisation. He doesn't fit into this meta and is really weak in comparison to meta champs like Malp, Naut, Trund, Poppy, Fiora (if she hasn't been too hard hit by nerfs) in terms of snowball potential, risks if you fall behind, team fight ability (I'm just gonna put it out there, tryn is one of the worst teamfighters especially if you are inexperienced or are in a game with high elo/experienced players) and overall impact in ALL situations, be it way behind, way ahead or on equal terms. Why is it so that he hasn't seen competitive play? It is because of these reasons; the probability of him being deadweight or just meh in games is too damn high compared to his carry/carrying the carry potential due to an unfavourable meta, poor matchups, easy mechanical counters (KITING, grevious wounds/ignite, easily snowballed on. Im sorry fellow tryn mains, but I have to sound it out.). This has been the case for the longest time and even though he has a decent winrate and is seeing more play in european servers, it is mostly due to highly skilled tryn mains carrying the whole tryn lot, inexperienced opponents and his low play rate, esp in higher elo.
He needs a rework to bring stability into his gameplay. He needs more security in his journey during a game to his peak performance. Something to make him not fall so far behind so easily while making him less invincible if he is 5+ kills up till maybe late game. This re-emphasises his nature as a champion and ensures a more even gameplay. You don't become useless, more useless than a behind riv or fiora, but you make people go "broken af", "op, ban him" when you have successfully snowballed in all chat lesser till late game (30 min++). So your risk of falling behind badly is reduced to a balanced number but your main concept of ramping up to late game and 2v1 while splitpushing still stays.
For example, you could boost his sticking potential and mobility; make his underused and underestimated skill, W, slow whether they have their backs turned or not for a slightly increased amount at a slightly lower cooldown (its on a fixed 14 sec cooldown which is pretty long compared to other skills of other champs during tryn's shine time of late game.), make his E spin lower its cooldown on auto attacks and not crits, etc. Or you could completely change his W to include a stun at the expense of no/lesser AD debuff. Yes, I get it, tryns a adc and giving him a heavy cc wld make him broken. BUT he is a MELEE adc. He needs to get to people to deal damage and not just sit behind and hit people from range w just a slow to make things easier (jinx, kogmaw). You could also focus abit more on tryn POST ult. Maybe you could move the cooldown on hit thing from his E to his Q whereby every crit reduces the cooldown. Else, I wont be able to counterplay a good ignite or grievious wound unless I go AP tryn which isnt viable now (hybrid+attackspeed is the way to go) as my Q cooldown is too high and is fixed. Maybe you could focus more on his 'the lower my health, the more damage' style by making him exceptional at extended trades, ie. make his ult's active time scale (3s,4s, then the original 5s at max rank) in exchange of a steroid (AD buff, attack speed buff, LIFET STEAL buff AFTER his ult for 2 seconds, etc.) and no reduced cooldown by rank, his Q's passive giving slightly more AD per percent health lost. Rage passive generation rate is fine as its a part of his kit that one must play around as a good tryn.
TLDR; Tryn can go both ways in a game VERY easily, and its mostly south as he is currently out of meta (Role in team, items, etc.). He is unbalanced in the sense tht he can rofl stomp people or become worse-than-feeder-riv deadweight, the latter being the more usual case. Thus he needs a rework to smoothen things out and really bring out the difference between good tryns and bad ones and not just praying your team snowballs you to a god as that doesn't happen in solo queue.
I really hope riot/rioter reads this as I put in A LOT of effort to compile the views of the community on Tryndamere in this article, though it may not be fully detailed as I don't wanna bore you guys too much. Imo, he is a great champion for people who are unable to make mechanically hard plays under pressure or do mechanically hard plays due to a medical/mental condition, high ping/bad internet lag, etc. but are willing to go deeper than deep in terms of micro-management and strategy to come out tops.
