The feel and gameplay of current "events" and a bit on how to fix them.

Hey all!

I created this post to bring some light to the current event system and maybe give a way or two to improve them. Me and a few of my friends have thought about this topic for quite a while and we all felt like the events that we currently have are quite mundane and repetitive. I also have to say, that regardless of what me and my friends' opinions are on these matters, we still like the dev team and wish nothing but success to them.

What I feel is bad about the current events: You get a pass (or not), you grind out the same old missions where you need to kill X amount of minions or get a certain amount of gold or whatever and just rinse and repeat. There's no feel to the event, nothing really to make it feel like a certain part of lore is being brought to players through this event. There's just a few accents on the rift, a few skins and chromas and that's pretty much it. The event seems to also have too much to "collect". While yes, you don't need to collect everything, you might feel left out if you don't, since that content may not come out ever again. So in a way, it forces you to play League for a certain amount of time and I feel like it's bad. Especially when the events are back-to-back.

In regards of the rewards system I feel like getting golden chromas on everything makes them feel pretty insignificant and normal. Getting golden chromas on most skins makes them feel pointless. Same would go with borders. I get that people wouldn't earn them all through free-to-play but I feel like there's still a point to be made about the number of these chromas and borders going out in such a huge number. On the point of prestige skins, I feel like they are also getting quite boring and annoying. Feels like way too many prestige skins in less than a year.

While I feel like the events are really bad, I feel like there are still some good things about them. I really like how you can earn quite a lot of tokens and stuff through quests, even if most are behind the pass pay-wall. It's better than having to just buy stuff off the store. Same goes to the prestige points. I really hated the points at first, but at least they introduced the missions that give them as well. Even if those missions are quite annoying and grindy.

Now this all makes it seem like I hate the events and what they contain. No. I like these events. Just not this often. I wouldn't mind an event like this (or two) in a year. But it does get stale after a while.

Me and my friends thought of ways to improve the events and make them more interactive and I'm pretty sure there are even better ideas out there how to improve them. We thought of having a Co-op vs Ai (or even PvP) events, even if they are short, just to give players an idea about the lore and stories behind the characters of the events and whatnot. Think of this like the Overwatch Co-op vs AI modes where there's a story and players get to play certain heroes that have ties to the lore. For a league example: PROJECT event could've had some of the Outsiders face off against PROJECT enemies or whatnot. They wouldn't need to be as big as the StarGuardian event or the Odyssey event. Nothing on that scale. Most likely wouldn't even need to change much about the maps. Maybe some Bilgewater event gamemodess could take place on the Butchers' Bridge or something. Maybe the event lasts for a few weeks and every two weeks the story would progress a bit and a new part of the Co-op vs Ai (or PvP) would start with similar characters in the same or similar place.

I know that would probably be more workload on the staff and I couldn't really blame Riot for that. It's just an idea though. I'm sure someone will come up with a better idea in time but I just wanted to throw something out there to at least give some feedback instead of just ranting away and not doing anything to try and fix the problem.

I can't also stress this enough, but this isn't meant to bash the dev team in any way. Love the devs and what they do. <3

I hope you all enjoyed this lengthy post! Sorry for that!

I actually really like your suggestion (and also feel the current "events" feel lackluster). Considering Riot recently said that their game modes team won't be looking at doing things like Odyssey and similar PvE events again because of the cost, I think a PvE on the rift would fit well.

Similar to doom bots in the fact that it's a co-op vs AI game mode but something a little extra is added in (Roaming Dragons? new exciting items? Big battle boss AI's?) This also give Riot incentive to create more AI for champions as there's only a handful that have AI.

The workload would be much less than what was needed to create something like Odyssey (re-using maps, game modes and AI) and would be a fun and interesting new way to play and learn the lore.

I loved the events when they actually put effort into them such as butcher's bridge, odyssey/guardians, nexusblitz, and clash; the others like hexakill, ascension, and nemesis draft were fun alternatives because they threw the meta out the window, but still felt lackluster because they just used the same maps already used for years with minimal change. Not wanting to continue making up new extensive stuff like the first group I could understand, if they were going under or were still a tiny indie company; but refusing to even return the marginal effort ones from the previous group with the claim 'lacking resources' is suspiciously insulting considering they've been pulling nine figure profits for years. For your idea, doombot's originally had this when it launched years before it's satanic teemo overhaul, odyssey & guardians also had some background lore to them too, for years in the PBE server the aram map hinted at allowing AIs in custom games in the future, but last I checked you still cannot on live servers. Granted I agree we don't know everything, and it could be the upper management holding devs' families hostage or something for these drastic changes to go through without forethought; it's just aggravating to repeatedly hear how they're advancing the game, but consistently refuse to keep more than 3 gameplay modes running simultaneously despite smaller companies handling heavier workloads easily.
