She is pretty good especially in this meta. Lots supports are more useless for example Nunu. Your friend is probably new

She's been banned in almost every game of Worlds I've watched this year.

Obviously pro meta isn't necessarily the same as solo queue meta all of the time, but in this case I think it's fair. She's very strong right now.

To put it simply? Your friend is wrong.

Janna is usually at least a rather reliable support, and she's very strong in the Ardent Censor meta. She does need a team that knows how to work with her and a good player behind her to really be as impactful as she can be though.

She's been arguably the best support for several seasons up until a patch or two ago when her kit was tweaked somewhat. She is likely still quite effective and strong, but theres probably still some learning curve to how to best play her now (e max versus w max is less obvious now for example), and it's yet to be seen if all the nerfs to her and ardent might leave her in a subpar situation when the dust has settled.

Jannas impact under most conditions isn't terribly flashy or in your face compared to most other supports though, so thats why she may not be perceived as being super strong. She's always been the goddess of peel though, able to make up for a carries lackluster positioning and sometimes entirely denying assassins, and so has always been one of the best in terms of winrate.

Like those years where she didn't have any items(just purely wards) and managed to snag the victorious skin, a skin for the most impactful champ in a season, from the jaws of every other champ, most of whom had the ability to buy items?

Janna's strength isn't her shield, it is her bountiful amounts of cc. Anytime that divers, assassins, or late scaling adc's are good, Janna will be good too as she has the power to protect the last one better than any other support and make the first two's attempts to reach the third useless. She will be as good after Ardent becomes useless as she was before it became useful(which is still very useful).

It's not Janna that's useless, it's just a good bit of the people that play her. She's actually great to have on your team if the player knows what they're doing.

Well, if you try out Janna and get bad adc every games, she might give out the image of being useless. She depends heavily on her team as she can't do enything by herself.

Also i see too many Janna thinking they're poke supports and spam their Q for harass.
