New Rune/Masteries Concerns

This post isn't for discussing specific masteries, what is OP or what isn't. But rather the new system as a whole.

So initially when I saw the new rune/mastery system, I was really excited. A ton of new options, all of which seem to have a pretty decent impact of how a game will be played. I've been waiting for a bit of an overhaul to get rid of the IP costs of rune building and it finally came! Most of them seem really neat.

However the more I'm looking at them, the more I'm concerned with how limited customization has become. Before you would choose a set of runes tailored specifically how you wanted. All AD? Go all AD! Mix AD and AP, get Health, move speed, CDR, lifesteal or spellvamp, mana, mana regen. Anything your heart desired, then you could change them to specifically match your preference, like giving up a rune or 2 in AD to incorporate a different stat. Additionally you had the masteries, 30 points to throw into the different trees depending if you wanted more damage, tankiness, or utility. Do I need to explain more? We've been using this system since the inception of the game.

I'm worried after the appeal of NEW RUNE/MASTERY SYSTEM!! has worn off and the new meta settled in, we're left with picking your champion, picking one tree, with 4 sets of a 'choose 1 of 3' option. And that's it. And sure from the outset, that's a lot of options! But depending on your role, you could probably eliminate 2-3 trees because maybe some of your choices just don't fit well enough and it would be kind of a waste. Then a few options in the tree you chose you could eliminate some options because for one reason or another you can't viably choose some masteries for the champ you chose.

TL;DR I'm thinking the new runes/masteries overhaul will really streamline our options and we won't have that same feeling of personal customization that I'd want to have. Since this is the route LoL is going, I'd personally would like if they could added a 6th tree and then you can choose 2 of the 6 trees. I believe with the strength of the new changes, mixing mastery choices would really become dynamic.

Overall I agree, and think that it's one of the weakest aspects of the rune system as a whole. However, there are a ton of ways to tweak the rune system to address your issues, they could easily just add more runes.

I like the potential of this system way more than what we currently have.

I personally treat the new Runes system as a perk tree. I find the idea really exciting to try and mix n' match my own pages until I find what works for me. Min-maxing will exist no matter what so the argument that there are less viable combinations doesn't hold up. In an ideal world we'd be given multiple options or setup that are equally viable for the same champion. As a top lane main it has felt like the fun has been going on in all the other lanes as of late so I'm extremely excited for this year's preseason.

Everyone pretending the old rune system had depth is just cherrypicking the one game in 500 they ran full scaling armour Malphite or Rammus into a 5AD team and neglecting that they all just took 9AD/9AR/9MR/3AD almost every game.
