I main Support, have for two seasons. I don't really rank much. I play my ten games at the end of each season. This year I hit bronze IV, solo - not really interested in raising that until, as stated above, I can find an ADC I can work with. SOOOOooooo... given that, here's my two cents:
The quality of your ADC will greatly effect you, maybe even ruin you. Example: If I'm 1/0/1 but my ADC goes 0/4/0, I'm going to start dying trying to hold the lane. One because they are fed, two because my ADC is either doing things to die or dead in base and lastly and most importantly, my gold is directly tied to the ADC's farm. If the ADC is going all in, not farming and/or dead all the time leaving me 1 v 2 and zoned out then I'm broke and horribly behind. It generally snowballs from there. And guess who the team flames? Which brings me to my second point.
Support is the most flamed, least honored and thankless role. If you do your job perfectly, the ADC gets all the honor. In the above example, it's YOU who they will blame. ADCs are the WORST! They will flame you when they die and OFTEN. Example: I ping low mana, the ADC all ins. All I can do is AA.... he's DOA. "!" and "?" pings everywhere! Every time he dies, I get flamed. And as it snowballs, the others join in even if you are doing well. It stings, man. Especially when you chose your champ around them and did all you could for them. And GOD FORBID that you should ever accidentally kill a minion! Or kill an enemy champ! Which brings me to the next point.
If you like Ss (I DO), you'll have the hardest time getting them if you do your job right. Even with 20+ assists you need a few kills for a Support S. You'll get flamed to hell and back for any KS - supports don't get to have kills in most players mind. Plus your item build is usually geared toward protection not kills. Some utility mages can still get some kills but it seems to be a tank Support meta now. ADCs should love this. We tank the damage, take all the risk and they get all credit. If we die tanking while they screw up their combos, you guessed it... our fault.
Finally, the honor system. I usually only get one honor if my adc does well. If he sucked, no honor. If he does great by every kill that I GAVE him, he might throw me one. But the rest go to him. Occasionally I'll play for myself if my ADC is bad. I'll get flamed for it... at first. But if I get enough supganks and assists, I may get a few honors. Only ONCE I got three with high kills and assists over garbage from them. But again, getting kills with Support gear is challenging. It's ultra rare for a Support to carry. And if you do, you likely get flamed instead of honored.
NOW. If you can handle all that, it's an awesome role. I've got a pretty tough skin, draw fulfillment from my own accomplishments and don't look to others for self worth. I get great satisfaction from making beautiful team plays, the perfect peel, the timely buff that saves the fight. I know I just saved their asses. That's enough for me. But a "gj" does feel nice. They don't notice the things Supports do in low elo. I'd suspect it gets better the higher you get where they are mature enough to recognize. In proplay, it's the Support who shines. It's the most demanding and versatile role in the game. Why play anything else?
To get the most out of the experience, mute, mute, mute. And if your ADC sucks, play his role. Sometimes you have to. If he won't farm, take it. If he keeps going all in under bad circumstances, let him die instead of risking both of you. If your lane is secure, leave him. Some ADCs think you are there for their every whim. You aren't and don't put up with that BS.
ADCs take note: If you treat me with a shred of decency and can halfway play this game, I WILL TURN YOU INTO A GOD! That's where my satisfaction comes from.... If you flame me, you'll get muted and maybe I'll peel to keep you in lane.
