Some thoughts about ARAM (Riot reaction welcome)

Hello Riot,

maybe you heard about some players, that complain about the unfair "team-composition" and the bot-problem in ARAM.

Well. I have 1 or 2 ideas, how you can fix this with more or less programming effort...

Idea 1: You have 5 Player in both teams. Currently it can happen, that one team starts with 5 close-range support champs, and the other team with 3 adc's and 2 burst mages... You may notice that this is not quite fair for one of the teams...

That is why i would recommend a "fair random system". What i mean is, that you should give every team either a) 1 Summoners-Rift-role (this means: 1 Jungler, 1 Support, 1 ADC, 1 APC and 1 Toplaner) OR (if this is too much effort) b) 1 role of each archetype (this means: 1 Fighter/Tank, 1 Assassin, 1 Marksman, 1 Mage and 1 Support)

The archetypes should be somehow integrated in your system. That is why version b is maybe the better solution for you. The thing is, that this would create far more balanced matches and way more cheerful players.

And about the bots...Hm. I really don't know how you could solve this Problem without an unbalanced banning system... Empirically a report after the game is quite senseless. Nothing changes.

One crazy idea: Even if you use bots, you have to be online. So...you all know this big "You are AFK"-Window, if you doesn't move for a while? What if you could mark someone as a bot over the TAB-window. And if at least 3 People from both teams marks them, they get such a big window with a message "Your team think you are a bot" or something... and if he do not react for 10 seconds, you know for sure that he must be using a bot, because no one can play with this letterbox in the foreground. And I wouldn't use pop-up-sounds. because so every bot user would notice this letterbox and could click it away.

I would be happy if Riot would read and comment my thoughts :)

And please correct me, if something is wrong. I'm german, and english is not my best 2nd language ^^

I have never encountered a bot in my ARAM games. So I'm not sure how often it happens for you.

As far as balanced ARAM teams go, I don't think that Riot would be able to balance them the way you suggest because of champions that fall into more than one category. For example, Morgana is a support and a mage, able to be played both mid and support.

Role restrictions are controversial. Some people want them for "more balanced matches," other hate them for "restricting ARAM's randomness." Plus, rerolls already serve a similar purpose.

Bot windows wouldn't help, as botmakers could simply include a "click away box" function.

Biggest problem I see with "Restricting randomness," is that people are rerolling a particular champion because they hate playing their class. In such a system, who ever got dealt the tank, is pretty much stuck with the tank if no one is willing to trade. Because rerolling would given them another tank. The only way I could see people putting up with it is if we implemented role selection. (Which would increase Q times, and you would still get auto filled to the role nobody wants)

ARAM is kinda a different beast from SR. I don't think it's fair to compare the two in a competitive sense. Of coarse the Randomness create scenarios were one team has a clear advantage. (Probably why there's no ranked version of this mode) But I'm willing to bet that isn't a deciding factor for the people playing it. They play it because they find it fun working within the constraints of the champion they were dealt.

I'm not sure how much ARAM you play because you are missing one of the biggest factors to asking balanced teams in ARAM. You have not factored ARAM-onlu accounts. I used to love being a support main, and played a few casters when the position was open, but naturally swayed towards teamfight roles. So my champ pool was practically only supportive casters and a couple mages. No bruisers, no top laners. Though I understand how you want to keep it even, many players dont own the champions to make it even.

The only real way to make this viable is to change ARAM entirely, and give all players all champs, which is probably the only crazy big move Riot can make with ARAM (and potentially make a lot of people angry, myself included)
