Early level rune changes and fanfare
Have you ever leveled up your league account and felt really disappointed when the only message you get is a tiny drop down in the right hand corner of the screen telling you new slots/summoner spells were available? Lets be honest, leveling up is a chore and doesn't feel exciting at all. ![]()
Simultaneously, early runes suck and the rune combiner sucks even more. Requiring players to buy runes which have little impact on the game (while the players are new at the game) and then upgrading them at incredibly low conversion rates just seems like straight IP bait.
My proposed solution to both of these problems is a surprisingly simple one which doesn't even involve getting rid of the rune combiner: simply give players some random runes of the appropriate tier whenever they level up. This allows for a popup (similar to the mystery skin one I would expect) to fill the screen and say "Congratulations on the level, have free stuff", and just makes leveling up less of a chore. This also would give incentive to use the rune combiner, as you wouldn't have had to buy the tier 1 crappy runes in the first place, but you would have them. Additionally, I think rebalancing the combiner to require less runes/perhaps giving more relevant runes (IE if you combine two yellows, you get a yellow), or maybe quints are more likely to occur. Finally, maybe even a free champ of choice at 30 (or random champ) would complete the leveling up experience.
TL;DR:Fanfare every levelup through giving out appropriate tiered runes, which in turn incentivizes the use of the rune combiner. Maybe even give a free champ to players who just hit 30 through the same fanfare mechanic.
