A year or so back they nerfed tank items and buffed tank champion innate defense. Problem is that Runes Reforged came in and skyrocketed damage across the board for everyone. This did a few things:
- Tanks building damage became more viable. If you can be innately fairly durable AND have respectable damage, why not?
- Reduced the relative value of a tanks building tank items since there's less incentive to build more tanky if you already have a solid amount innately.
- Made non-tanks looking to be more durable less able to do so by building tank items since it was strictly a net loss of possible defense. This further adds incentive to just build damage items.
Overall, I feel like this 1-2 punch was the worst thing that's ever happened to League as it's turned everything into a damage arms-race, shifting the game into a "battle royale" mode and much further away from having a more tactical, measured element. Long team fights and chases were always my favorite aspect of the game and now it's just "fight to the death, winning team takes 1-2 objectives, repeat" which is incredibly unsatisfying.
