Former Xin player in need of some community help

Hello all - FIrst time in a long time I've been on the forums but I am at my wit's end and hoping someone can help a casual player out. I play LoL one night a week on average with friends and I always play Xin Xhao. He's an easy champion that I really enjoyed playing and I was good with him against intermediate competition. After the rework he is unplayable to me. The nerf in damage output killed my play style. Early game top lane I would mostly play possum till lvl 6 then when the enemy champ got a little aggressive I'd dive in with E, then R, then Q. They take a big chunk of dmg and try to flee and I can usually chase them down and get kills. By late game I could afford to build how I want. The playing experience for me was a lot of fun.

I understand he is great in team fights now, but he was decent enough before and the damage nerf for me is so noticeable early on I just cant do it.

I was hoping for suggestions on a champion to play that does good dmg around levels 6-12 but who also isn't squishy. I've done ok with Aatrox but I find he dies too easily. Garen is a little slow for my style but I havent given him much of a chance yet.

TLDR:

I am an average player at best who played Xin Xhao really well before the rework. The nerf in damage especially in mid game kills my playing style with him and I'm in need of suggestions for an easy champion to play who is similar to old Xin/does good burst dmg but is also a little tanky.

Best course of action would probably be to try and forget what is memorized as "Xin Xhou."

Xin is really strong right now, and I'm wondering if the experience on Xin from before the rework is hurting playing Xin right now.

Here is top lane data on Xin: https://lolalytics.com/ranked/worldwide/platinum/plus/champion/XinZhao/Top/

The builds, skill orders and playstyle all shifted after the rework, so it'll take time to get used to it. I wish you luck.^^

Try J4 if you haven't yet. Can go full damage, tank, or in between. He doesn't have anywhere near Xin's sustain, but makes up for it with burst and utility.

Irelia and Wukong are probably the next closest to Xin's playstyle. Irelia's jungling sucks though, which is why I've never touched her. Wukong isn't as strong of a duelist as either, but he's a great teamfighter. He also punishes mistakes hard, so is easy to carry random potatoes with.

It's actually a buff in damage at all levels. Just max your W instead of Q or E now cuz they both have terrible scaling but W has ridiculous scaling.

And then land your W and you're set. Not much has changed, just land your new W and it's the same as ever.

I’m just gonna be honest with you: if you’re not doing at least the same damage, if not more, you need to continue adjusting your playstyle to match. Most of Xin’s kit is more or less the same (except for his W), and his DPS is actually higher because he has an extra damage ability. I just got dumpstered by a Xin as Jax, which should be a great matchup to me.

You may also need to investigate which runes work best. Press the Attack with Domination secondary, going Sudden Impact and Ravenous or Relentless Hunter, seems like they would be excellent on him.
