When to let turrets die?

I've been having trouble with this lately. I've won my lane and destroyed the enemy first tier turret (top lane btw). At this point I'm never sure whether I should go help my team or not. I know I should probably go help my team, but I don't want my turret to go down. If I leave, I know my lane opponent will just stay and destroy my turret, meaning my lane is no longer ahead (at least in turrets). So should I just let my turret be destroyed? Or does it depend on the situation?

It depends on a lot of factors.

It's fine to let your turret die if your team can get more in return. Ganking mid or bot can secure kills, a dragon and tower(s) from mid or bot.

If your jungler is topside, he can also cover while you TP botside.

When you are obviously outnumbered while mauling the crap out of your turret, simply hugging the tower would only give them more kills (e.g. dive comps or just simply you being low and OOM), and that you won't get anymore help.

Otherwise try to defend towers as much as you can.
